Demond Dennis switches from Georgia Tech to Troy

Running back Demond Dennis of Atlanta’s Carver High, who had committed to Georgia Tech this fall, now plans to sign with Troy, according to Carver coach Darren Myles Sr.

”He can be the focus ball carrier at Troy with the offense they run, a spread option, whereas with Georgia Tech, you’ve got the B back as the first option, the quarterback and then the tailback as the third,” Myles said. “Demond wanted to go some place where he could be the feature back.”

Troy coaches also felt Dennis had a chance to play as a true freshman. Tech’s primary running backs are sophomore Jonathan Dwyer and redshirt freshman Roddy Jones. Tech also has commitments from running backs Orwin Smith of Alabama and Daniel Drummond of Flowery Branch.

GT wanted Demond. He appears to be a good kid. Sometimes things just don’t work out. Troy is a good - up and coming football program. I and many other GT fans wish you well Demond.

Too bad he won’t be able to come to Tech, I really wanted him in a GT uniform. Good luck to him at Troy, a much better team than people realize that also adds in Jarboe next year.

I highly doubt grades were an issue. Tech accepts kids that think they’re playing for “Ga. Tech University” for Christ’s sakes, LOL!!! They use the NCAA minimum requirements. Nice try though.

I’m sure he could have got a confidence boost had he bothered to watch a single interview with Michael Johnson with his 4 word vocabulary. No doubt he’ll get a degree, but no way in heck he’s EARNING it, LOL!!!

Typical Yech!!

unfortunately for gt even we have kids who dont make the grades. alas we dont have hargrove to fall back on like the bullfrawgs

To RealiyYech: I guess you are from the great university that Jan Kemp exposed with their RAISING of the SAT bar to a 700 minimum score from a 400 (which is what you got for just signing your name) in the 1980s. The jackets never sunk that low.

Staying in school at GA and staying in school at Tech are different matters entirely. I know one FB player at GA who not only had someone take his SAT, but had his girlfriend take all his exams for him. Folks, I am not kidding. You can’t compare the two. This was in the Dooley years.

We are super deep in the backfield anyway. Another O- or D-lineman would be a nice replacement.

Just shows how deep at running back Tech is that the kid has to go somewhere else to play.

V8, Big Bug,gtfan Boys, you are either totally void of any form of intellect or clueless about reality as to the academics and GT vs Georgia. V8, you throw out the Jan Kemp line from the 80’s, have you conveniently forgotten the following from the 80’s as realted to GT? Sammy Drummer, Brooke Steppe names ring a bell? They should, Drummer couldn’t read, but he was a heck of a hoopster for GT who somehow stayed eligible; Steppe transferred in from Juco, failed out, then re-entered. How about football player Tyrone Sorrells? Tyrone was dismissed from The Univ of Ga for failure to “exit developmental studies”, but he later enrolled at GT under Coach Bill Curry (avoided Development Studies in direct violation of Board of Regents policy related to students who failed to exit DS at one system school and transfer to another), Tyrone played and later GRADUATED from GT. You can thank me later for the history lesson, and please feel free to verify the accuracy.

How about a more up to date lesson boys? Isn’t GT coming off probation for ‘academic fraud’? Didn’t GT play football players who were ‘academically ineligible’ which is, in reality, unbelievable? What about Stephon Marbury? Do you really want to convince us that he was a potential nuclear engineer? And what about the curious case of Anthony Barnes? Signed, admitted, oops not NCAA eligible, withdrew from school, back to high school, took him 2 yrs to gain eligibility? As to Hargrave, that fine private military school has been operating and accredited for over 100 yrs, and Hargrave alums are on the roster at UNC, SC, Michigan, schools generally recognized as outstanding academic universities, don’t you agree?

GT is NOT the academic bastion you boys tout it to be. It is an extremely fine academic institution, but GT has its share of academically challenged student-athletes. It accomodates athletes as does every D-1 school. Remind me, your graduation rate is what? Your APR is what?

By just the facts

Hey “Captain”, let me give you a lesson.Tech mandates a GPA of 2.55 in 16 core high school courses for an athlete to enroll. That core is two courses more than players needs to meet NCAA standard, and that GPA is 0.55 points higher than the NCAA minumum. This was taken from an article in the Atlanta Journal on 12/25/05. Every athlete at Tech must be working towards a management degree or higher. Yes, Tech does have some players to flunk out because there are no football or basketball degrees at Tech such as Recreation and Leisure Studies and such.

I attended both universities (UGA for 2 years and GT for 3 years). There is no comparison between the two academically. Most of the classes that UGA freshman take are non-credit classes at GT. I studied much harder at GT and my GPA (that stands for “Grade Point Average” for many of you UGA fans) dropped significantly from what it was at UGA.

So puhleazzz. Oh yea, How many points is a 3 pointer worth?

After reading the blog, then some of the posts referring to poor academics, I sure hopes it’s the latter. If academics were not the reason then the coaches quotes in the blog point to a “ME” player not a “TEAM” player, and frankly, PJ doesn’t run a ship with these type of players.

Back to Demond. I truly wish the young man well, but I wonder if our running back depth chart might have had something to do with it. We’ve got some second and third stringers who are pretty darn good. I can see why he would want to go to a school where he is more likely to play. There is surely nothing wrong with that.

Having a chance to get more carries had nothing to do with why Dennis is not coming to Tech. Joe’s post about academic requirements is the story, period.

By Rec

December 17, 2008 6:34 PM | Link to this

I do believe that Dennis might’ve had some issues with Tech academically because, although Troy is a very respectable program, I highly doubt he’d turned down a chance to play there (a bigger, more visible ACC program) for Troy. That’s no disrespect to Troy, but the reason his coach gave is suspect at best.

Captain, maybe you should look at a different statistic (that’s a fancy word for number). Look at the graduation rate of Tech athletes compared to the graduation rate of the Tech population at large. They’re actually not that different. US News and World Report has often said that the only thing that keeps us from being tied with MIT (instead of the 3rd or 4th best engineering school in the nation) is that we have too high of a drop out rate.

When I was in architecture, 33% of the students failed out THE FIRST YEAR!

As for the academically ineligible players. Yup, you’re right. We had them. The NCAA proved it wasn’t intentional though. It was “lack of administrative control.”

Captain….

Uh…no…..Tech is NOT coming off a probation for academic fraud. The program that just came off probation for academic fraud (as well as unethical conduct) would be UGA. Look it up.

Guess that’s why Tech has no games/records vacated….while UGA does.

You can thank me for the lesson.

By antiTom

Read the NCAA’s report moron Tom. Tech was dirty as hell and did everything in their power to supress a whistle blower that spilled the beans on Tech’s long running scheme to funnel athletes into non-degree courses to keep them eligible. Tech did their best to cover it up. And by the way, Lack of Institutional Control is a very serious offense. You morons can’t spin this. And besides, it is obvious that you dumbazzes never have set foot in a GT classroom much less graduated. You are way too dumb.

By Sam

December 18, 2008 7:52 AM | Link to this

GT was nailed for the biggest academics related offense in ACC history. That is fact. Check it. You morons have a curriculum for academically challenged just like everyone else. But if you want to stick to your ridiculous position, please explain Reggie Ball, Joe Hamilton, and that mental giant Joe Burns.

Fellas in the 70’s and the 80’s a ton of the linemen at Tech took classes at Ga State….I used to drink with a group of them from time to time…both schools have had times when”corners were cut” to get and keep players on the field..I hope this young man has a fine carrer at Troy and congrats to the Ga Tech coaches for their actions if the young man failed to live up to his end of the bargin what they did was the correct IMHO course of action..
