Perry OL says “thanks, but no thanks” to Steve Spurrier
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Steve Spurrier gave it his best shot with Perry offensive lineman Johnnie Farms, but apparently it did not work. Farms is not going to make an official visit to South Carolina.
If you remember, Farms committed to South Carolina, and then switched to North Carolina after saying the education “was a little better [at UNC] than South Carolina.”
Then Spurrier traveled to Perry to tell Farms about the advantages of playing in the SEC over the ACC, along with his own academic research. He heavily encouraged Farms to visit South Carolina to learn more.
The 6-foot-3, 306-pound Farms appreciated the conversation with Spurrier, but told the AJC he will not take an official visit to South Carolina. Farms said he called The Old Ball Coach to let him know the news.
“I’m committed to North Carolina,” said Farms, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 8 offensive guard by Rivals.

The kid commits to USC before he takes an official visit. Goes on an official visit to UNC and commits. Sounds like he didn’t give SC a equal chance. It’s not an intelligent way to do things. Where are the parents?

Just because he didn’t take an official visit doesn’t mean he hasn’t visited the school. UNC is a better school than South Carolina. He has made a decision and shows class in my opinion by not stringing Spurrier along by taking an official visit.

Munson’s Call & MB…What is this kids major, that will determine which school is better UNC or USC. As for the best conference look at the last 5/10 yrs, not one year. It’s well documented nationally which conference is best for football and which is best for basketball. Time will tell if this kid made a wise decision.

UNC is 10 times as good as USC academically. Plus, in football, UNC is better than USC now and will be a lot better in the years to come. This kid didn’t want to play for some old washed up coach like spurrier, who uses an offense that worked in 1998, but not 2008. Hang it up Steve—-head to the golf course.

MB,
Stats can be made to look like anything. Unfortunately for you, I am here to expose your weak argument for what it is. You have clearly manipulated the numbers to make an argument for the last three years. Let’s look at the last 10 years, a number that gives more perspective over a greater period of time.
First round Selections in NFL Draft - 2008: SEC 6; ACC 7 2007: SEC 11; ACC 6 2006: SEC 4; ACC 12 2005: SEC 10; ACC 5 2004: SEC 6; ACC 1 2003: SEC 4; ACC 1 2002: SEC 6; ACC 3 2001: SEC 5; ACC 4 2000: SEC 6; ACC 4 1999: SEC 8; ACC 4
Totals for the last 10 years: SEC 66, ACC 47
Also, before you say anything dumb about Va Tech, Miami, or BC, I will save you the embarrassment and let you know that these teams were not part of the ACC until after the ‘04 draft. Notice how the ACC’s numbers go up once Miami, BC, and VT came to the conference.
One of the main reasons for bringing those teams over was because the ACC was a one team football conference up to that point, i.e. FSU. They were hoping to make the conference more competitive nationally. You have to go back to the 1981 to find another ACC team that won a full national championship in football (Tech got 1/2 of one in 1990). Once again, this is perspective.
I agree with UNC folk, that if you are good enough, you will play on Sunday, no matter what conference. However, since you based your arguments on numbers, I had to expose it for what it is: void of perspective.

The fact that anyone would try to compare So Car’s education to UNC’s is unbelievable. I’m a Tech grad and hate UNC, but they are one of the premiere colleges in education in the country. Tobacco Road isn’t just a great place to play basketball. UNC, Duke, NC St, and Wake Forest are top notch schools. It just so happens that UNC is now building a football program like the one they had when Mack Brown was there. I’d shut up if I were you Gamecocks. You’ll find out soon enough what UNC is all about in 2010. Butch Davis is going to make Spurrier look like a pop warner coach. I’m just glad that Paul Johnson is going to help us keep up with the rising programs in the ACC.

Hate to point out the obvious but UNC did not compete against the SEC for his commitment, they competed against South Carolina. UNC is a much more highly regarded school. There’s no contest. The football program at UNC has at least the near term potential (1 to 5 years) as South Carolina with an admittedly easier path to a BCS bowl. Why does going to an “inferior” conference shed a bad light on his decision?

Hey Perspective, you list all the numbers and then disprove them with your own arguments. Typical SEC brain power. You said, “Notice how the ACC’s numbers go up once Miami, BC, and VT came to the conference” and that they didn’t join until after ‘04. that means that the SEC had 3 more schools to send kids to the NFL than the ACC had. no wonder they had more than the ACC. since ‘04 when they each had 12 schools it’s SEC 31 ACC 30. that’s not perspective, that’s reality. guess we’re not a basketball conference anymore. deal with it!

There has never been one good football player come out of the poor little acc, not one good team or one good player, look it up. He’s going to “loser” academic schools, because he couldn’t cut the competition a UGA, he didn’t want to be 7th string. This is not crying it’s just fact. ps US News and World Report knows nothing about what schools are good. UGA has a Rhodes Scholar!

Probably the UNC grad sent his daughter to Pharmacy School at USC because she got in there. My youngest son is a pharmacist. He went to UGA because he got in there. If he hadn’t gotten into UGA, we had applied to other Pharmacy Schools and he would have gone to whichever one he had gotten into. When you’re talking about Pharmacy School, you take whatever you can get. The competition to get in is tremendous.

hey perspective, Notice how after the ACC let in UM, BC, and VT, they ALSO had TWELVE MEMBER schools, instead of 9. Wow, I wonder if the SEC having 12 schools while the ACC had 9 could have possibly impacted the numbers??? Hmmmmmmmmm?
How about this the SEC has historically been known as a FB powerhouse, the ACC has not. But he’s not planning on playing for the SEC, i think it was between UNC and SCAR. Comaparative stats between those schools are all that really matter. Anyone that believes that SCAR is headed up with UNC heading down… has been in the “juice”. You “wonder why”, huh? Well, lets’ see…
South Carolina’ Pharmacy School probably gave her a better financial aid package.
Her dad just may be a disgruntled alum.
She may be a resident of South Carolina which would make it cheaper there.
She may want to be a pharmacist IN South Carolina which would then make more sense for her to attend school there.
She probably didn’t get into Pharmacy School at UNC.
There are five reasons off the top of my head with the majority (exclude #3) being very viable. I could come up with so many more but who cares…I’m happy she’s attending school regardless of her program or whatever.
And to anyone bugged out by this guy’s decision, who cares if he wants go to one school over another for whatever reason. Millions of people make the same/similar decisions on nearly a daily basis and no one cares. Get a life.

Ramble On,
UF would love to play your pathetic team as an away game. Not only will it help our strength of schedule, but it will help assert our dominance over the entire state of Georgia. Think about this. UF 49, UGA 10; GT 45, UGA 42. Now imagine how GT would stack up against a team that put 42 on them when UF let that same team put on 10. GT would abandon their football program after a Florida massacre
As for JacketSteve, SEC will be crying for years to come? First off, this year isn’t over and the SEC could easily smack the hell out of the ACC in bowl games, so don’t go hold your breath. Second, to go back to Whining ACC fans point, there has been one good team in the ACC for the past 20 years. One! Look at how may times the SEC has won the NC during that span!
The reason why the ACC got Miami, BC, and VT is because FSU was winning every year and the conference as a whole was a joke, as it still is.
ACC is the SEC’s little sister.

I’m a law professor. Many of my students come from UNC and South Carolina. My oldest son graduated from UNC”s business school with highest honors.
Here’s the deal. Both schools have strong academic departments. A student who applies himself, will get an excellent aducation at either school.
However, UNC is one of the most liberal schools in the country. I had the former president of the Young Republicans at UNC as a law student last year. His survey of UNC faculty revealed there were 4 faculty members at UNC who were Republicans. A mock election among the UNC law faculty several years ago resulted in 51 votes for the Democratic candidate and 1 for the Republican candidate.
UNC lacks serious diversity when it comes to intellectual diversity. My law students who graduated from UNC undergraduate have related horror stories about how conservative students are treated.
All in all, if I had a choice, I would not send a child to UNC because of the lack of diversity form an intellectual standpoint.

For the record UNC’s Pharmacy School ranks as one of the finest in the country. When I was there in the late 90’s it was ranked #2 behind the Univ. of San Francisco. I’ll not speak to S. Rambles on and on, are you only trying to be funny? I bet on Tech to beat UGA because obviously UGA unfolded this year. In fact, I think any SEC fan would admit that the conference was way down this year. All the hype came from the past few years when the SEC was the strongest conference (couple of NC’s to prove it). Florida kicked FSU butt and Alabama would do the same to ANY of the ACC teams, this year. Next year maybe its different but right now, you are funny.

What does any of this have to do with Mark Richt being all Botoxed up and going 2-7 against Florida since he first arrived. The Right Reverand Richt also managed SOMEHOW to go 1-2 against Ron Zook which is similiar to scoring lower on the SAT than the future junior Senator from the state of Alabama. How do you go 1-2 against a guy who in his introductory press conference at Illinois pronounced the name of the school with a HARD “s” sound. You can’t have a losing record to Ron Zook. That is also like serving as an OC to a demented fossil and then believing you took something from the experience besides an ill guided feeling of superiority over your elders. According to US News and World Report, the ACC has UNC, UVA, Duke, Wake Forest, BC and Georgia Tech ranked in the top 40 universities in the country. The SEC has only one—Vanderbilt! Except for the Ivy League, no other conference has as many highly ranked academic schools. According to US News, most of the SEC schools are listed as “second tier.” This list includes Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss, tenn, Ky, USC, etc…etc…So this kid may actually want a degree from a top school where he can have a good life after football!

78 Dawg, did you really say that there’s never been one good player come out of the ACC? boy, are you an idiot. there are too many to list so just let this one sink in for a while. this player changed the entire way that football is played on offense and defense. have you ever heard of someone named LAWRENCE TAYLOR? he played at UNC, which happens to be an ACC school. i’ll name another because he’s one of ours, CALVIN JOHNSON. once he’s out of Detroit and playing for a team that people watch, everyone will know who the best receiver in football is.

Give me a break when a football player gives me the academic talk, especially when they do it some publicly. Perry would get a good education at both schools if he wants it. Sounds like Perry is afraid of SEC competition, honestly. Most football and basketball players at UNC are funneled to a “African American Studies” track anyways. You can look it up yourself.

There seems to be a math problem up here in Tar Heel country. The Tar Holes have 14 seniors leaving after this season, but Davis can’t seem to count because so far he has 24 commitments for next year and a full 85 on scholarship. Is he going to run a bunch of them off? Pull their scholarships? Lots of talk on local sports show up here in Chapel Hill this morning about it. Maybe they will pull some of their offers or maybe they are recruiting a whole lot of non-qualifiers. Hargrave Academy here we come.
