Georgia Tech’s newest recruit considers early enrollment
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Westside-Macon linebacker Julian Burnett, Georgia Tech’s newest commitment, is considering enrolling in January.
Burnett will have an opportunity to discuss his options with academic counselors during his three-day official visit to Tech, which begins on Dec. 19.
“I’ll have all of my classes [at Westside] out of the way by the end of this month,” Burnett said. “I could enroll at Georgia Tech in January.
“I’m thinking about it, but I’m not really leaning either way right now. I do know the benefit of going [to Tech early] outweighs staying.”
Burnett picked the Yellow Jackets over offers from South Carolina, Purdue, Wake Forest, and N.C. State. He also heard from UGA, but had not been offered.
Burnett said Tech coaches plan to keep him at linebacker. It’s undetermined if he’ll play in the middle or outside.
“Yeah, they’re still looking at me at linebacker,” he said. “They haven’t said which one. They’ll try me at each one.”
Burnett said Tech coach Paul Johnson made a late push for him after viewing his highlight tape.
“The whole staff watched my film,” he said. “Afterwards, coach Johnson [told his assistants] ‘he’s the guy I want.’”

Westside LB Julian Burnett said his dreams led to Georgia Tech commitment

Julian Burnett, a hard-hitting linebacker from Westside-Macon, became the 18th member of Georgia Tech’s 2009 recruiting class on Tuesday when he committed to the Jackets.
He chose Tech over N.C. State and Ole Miss. He cited first-year Tech coach Paul Johnson as a primary factor in his decision.
“I was just impressed with coach Johnson,” the 5-foot-10, 220-pound Burnett said. “He impressed me with the kind of season he had. And it’s only going to get better.”
Following in-home visits from several competing colleges last week, Burnett determined over the next few days that he’d like to call Tech his new home. He picked the Yellow Jackets over offers from South Carolina, Purdue, Wake Forest and N.C. State.
“I had a lot on my mind following those visits,” said Burnett, who will take an official visit to Tech on the weekend of Dec. 19. “But I started having dreams that I should go to Georgia Tech.
“In my mind, it was like that happened for a reason.”

Did Tucker’s Jonathan Davis lose scholarship offer from Georgia Tech?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Is Georgia Tech still involved with Tucker’s Jonathan Davis?
The 5-foot-7, 205-pound Davis told the AJC on Wednesday night that Georgia Tech is no longer recruiting him. Davis is arguably the state’s top overall football player, and also highly regarded as a college prospect. On Friday, Davis scored the game’s only touchdown in Tucker’s win over Marist for the Class AAAA championship.
Have the Yellow Jackets officially rescinded the scholarship offer? Davis paused for a few seconds, and then said. “I have no idea. I haven’t heard from [Tech].”
Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson had hoped for an early commitment from Davis after offering in early September, but Davis wanted to check out other options before making a final decision. In the last few weeks, Tech landed two commitments at running back, which could’ve influenced the school’s decision to remain involved with Davis.
Davis projects to play running back or linebacker in college. He is the nephew of former UGA All-SEC linebacker Mitch Davis.
On Wednesday night, Davis preferred to talk about the schools still recruiting him. He said he will make four official visits in January (dates to be determined).
“I’m going to visit South Carolina, UAB, Miami and Oklahoma State,” said Davis. He said he had scholarship offers from all four schools. Davis denied rumors he is leaning towards South Carolina, saying he does not have any favorites.

UGA-bound QB Aaron Murray overcomes injury to lead team to state championship game
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

You’ve got to like the style of UGA-bound quarterback Aaron Murray.
On his first pass in his first high school game in more than two months, Murray threw a touchdown.
Hollywood couldn’t have written a better script.
Murray, who is recovering from a broken leg suffered on Oct. 16, completed 12 of 26 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns in Plant High’s 33-21 win over Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer in the state semifinals, according to the Tampa Tribune.
Murray will lead his team against Tallahasee Lincoln for the state championship on Dec. 20 at Orlando’s Citrus Bowl.
Murray, who picked UGA over 53 scholarship offers, returned a month earlier than expected after surgery on his left leg to play against Dwyer. His ankle was heavily wrapped, and Murray limped at times. But he took every snap, according to the newspaper.
“A courageous performance,” Plant coach Robert Weiner told the Tribune. “Here’s a kid who had a sliver of hope after he was hurt in the Hillsborough game eight weeks ago, just one little sliver of hope to play, and yet he did everything in his power to get back for his team and his teammates.”
“That just says something good about the young man. He loves his team, he loves his teammates, and he just wanted to contribute in some way. And he sure did tonight. What a performance.”
After the game, Murray was hugged and congratulated by his coach, teammates and Plant supporters. He clearly was emotionally spent after the gutsy performance.
“I never would have dreamt that I would ever be back in a Plant uniform again,” Murray said. “But to come back and play in this game, and now play in the state championship game, is something very special and I’ll never forget.”

New Tennessee coach told “Your name is mud here”
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
David Reaves, who recently joined the staff of his brother-in-law Lane Kiffin at Tennessee, was told that “his name was mud here” after making an appearance on a South Carolina radio station, according to the Charleston Post-Courier.
Reaves was formerly the recruiting coordinator at South Carolina under Steve Spurrier before changing jobs a couple of weeks ago. Reaves has been accused of luring South Carolina recruits to Tennessee, and telling prospects that he knows “Spurrier will retire within the next year.”
Reaves denied both charges in his appearance on Columbia, S.C., radio station WNKT-FM earlier this week. He was interviewed by former South Carolina and NFL player Duce Staley.
Staley thanked Reaves for appearing on the show, listened to his explanations, and then uttered five words which will go down in South Carolina folklore.
“I’m going to be real with you right now, Reaves … Your name is mud here.”
