Georgia’s top high school senior recruits on display during football finals
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
The spotlight in state championship games always shines a little brighter for high school seniors who are fortunate enough to advance to the big stage. And with the football finals moving to the Georgia Dome for the first time in history, that spotlight will be much larger.
Some of the top players in Georgia’s illustrious high school history have won state titles — Herschel Walker, Garrison Hearst, Fran Tarkenton, Ray Guy, William Andrews, Jeff Francoeur.
And some of the best — Charlie Ward, Champ Bailey, Jamal Lewis, Eric Zeier, Charles Grant, Eric Berry — have not.
But it’s always a pretty good bet that the stars will shine when championships are on the line. So here are 12 of the top senior players — and most heavily recruited — who will be on display this weekend in the Dome:
Drayton Calhoun, Tucker
The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Calhoun admits that he likely would be committed to Georgia, rather than LSU, had circumstances been different. LSU moved very quickly with the speedy Calhoun, offering him last February before Georgia could finish its evaluation.
Calhoun fell in love overnight with LSU and has remained committed to the Tigers despite hometown pressures to consider Georgia. He is being recruited as an athlete.
Izaan Cross, Flowery Branch
The 6-foot-3, 250-pound Cross is considered one of the state’s top prospects who has not made a college decision. Cross, a defensive end, is the most heavily recruited player in school history, with nearly 20 offers, including Oklahoma and Florida State.
Cross told the AJC that Georgia Tech is his No. 1 choice, but Clemson has regained some of the momentum it lost after the coaching change.
Jonathan Davis, Tucker
The 5-foot-7, 205-pound Davis is arguably the state’s most accomplished player and a respectable college prospect at the linebacker position. Height has hurt Davis with some schools, but he has shown enough athleticism and speed to earn offers from Georgia Tech, South Carolina and Boston College.
The Gamecocks appear to have an edge over Tech for Davis, who is the nephew of former Georgia All-SEC linebacker Mitch Davis. Don’t be surprised if Georgia and numerous other schools get involved with Davis in the weeks before signing day in February.
Daniel Drummond, Flowery Branch
The 6-3, 230-pound Drummond is a longtime commitment to Georgia Tech who really did not get statewide respect until he began putting on a show during the playoffs. Even LaGrange coach Steve Pardue admitted he underestimated Drummond.
In last week’s semifinals, Drummond rushed for 248 yards and three touchdowns, including an 81-yard scoring run, at LaGrange, which has three seniors committed to Kentucky.
Washaun Ealey, Emanuel County Institute
The 6-foot, 205-pound Ealey is one of the most ballyhooed players in the state history, rushing for nearly 8,000 career yards and breaking records for career and single-season touchdowns.
Ealey, who was an early commitment to Georgia, has looked rather average during the playoffs, but that could be because of nagging ankle and back injuries. Ealey confessed last week that he is around 80 percent healthy.
J.C. Lanier, ECI
The 6-3, 335-pound Lanier has been overshadowed by his teammates, but may turn out to be the team’s best prospect. He has committed to Georgia Tech.
Lanier gets rave reviews for his physical style of play on the offensive line, hustling on every snap and being the team leader. Lanier surprised Wilkinson County in last week’s semifinals when he charged 20 yards downfield to block the safety — which is something you rarely see 300-pounders do in high school.
Dallas Lee, Buford
The 6-4, 295-pound Lee hurt himself in the recruiting rankings when he accepted a scholarship offer from Georgia. Lee likely would have added 10-20 offers within the next few months, but Georgia was his top choice, so he committed.
Lee quietly has enjoyed a stellar senior season and has proven to be dominant on offense and defense. He projects to play offensive line in college.
Eric McDaniel, Calhoun
How does Purdue land one of the state’s best defensive linemen? By recruiting McDaniel as hard as possible before other colleges could make inroads.
The 6-2, 295-pound McDaniel committed to Purdue over North Carolina State, Louisville and East Carolina. McDaniel made a concentrated effort to take football more seriously as a senior, and the result has been a season worthy of All-State consideration.
Kevin Minter, Peachtree Ridge
The 6-foot, 230-pound Minter was another early commitment to LSU. Alabama later offered, but Minter, a linebacker, has remained loyal to the Tigers.
Minter is likely one of the state’s best players you have never heard about. Why is that? This year’s group of linebackers is the state’s best in more than a decade.
Dexter Moody, ECI
The 6-2, 215-pound Moody is every bit the prospect as his celebrated teammate, Ealey. Moody, who has committed to Georgia, plays defensive end in high school, but projects to play inside linebacker or fullback in college. He’s known for his bone-jarring hits and for being able to play nearly every position on the field, including punter.
Angelo Pease, Cairo
Perhaps no one has more to gain this weekend than the 5-10, 180-pound Pease, who has offers from Middle Tennessee State and Georgia Southern, but is being scouted by numerous other schools, including Georgia Tech.
If Pease plays well at quarterback in the finals, then the floodgates could open with new offers.
DeAngelo Smith, Camden
The 6-3, 185-pound Smith already has heard all the jokes about being a wide receiver in Camden’s run-oriented offense. Right now, Smith is just fine with doing whatever it takes for Camden to win, even blocking.
Smith committed to the Gamecocks before Florida and Georgia could get better looks, although both have stayed in touch.

Running up big numbers at a lower division high school may not adequately reveal a player’s true talent level, but if you rush for nearly 8,000 yards in high school, against whoever, it is impressive….Herschel and Garrison played in lower divisions; from what I remember, they turned out OK. Welcome, Washaun; Go Dawgs!

I dont want to sound one sided as a Cairo fan, because I am sure there are alot of underated players on all the teams in quarter finals and finals OR THEY WOULD NOT BE THIS FAR INTO PLAYOFFS.Here are my picks for Cairo that have not been mentioned. Deawne Isom punt returner and receiver. We all know that Angelo Pease and Reginald Bryant are just good period. alot of running exists between tackles. Watch how the ol pull blocks and watch center justin Palmer. Also scouts need to watch # 21 Ronnie Wooten.who backs up bryant.Probably the most underated in playoffs. It kind of reminds you of Michael Turner BEING A BACK UP FOR Sandiego last year. only because thomalson was the starter. Anyone agree?

Hi, I assume that we are cleaning up in state because I see we have a few in state committments. I don’t realize that aren’t because I don’t know look at the actual rankings and see who has committed where. Yes, I’m that short sighted.

I am for sure that will get the best in-state talent. Who knows maybe one day we will actually win something with it. All those top 10-rated recruiting classes lead to a #1 ranking. That means something, right? That powerhouse Hawaii could hang. WOOF!!

Our boys here at “The Branch” have been underestimated as a whole… they have been underdogs every week, including this one. Thats how we like it. Coach Shaw will have our kids ready..again. Cross & Drummond, well they speak for themselves, the supporting cast are the “unspoken heroes”. Our fans have driven a little over 1000 miles this post season…now we will drive 45 more. Lets bring it home boys…YOU ALL deserve it!!

Yeah, we always assume that Georgia fans can’t spell. We have never actually met any Georgia fans, but we just assume it’s true. We will tell you we have met several who were dumb, but that’s really not true and we know it. We are commonly known as people who make statements about certain things without doing any research to see the validity of our comments, nor do we provide any factual information to back up our claims. We live in a little make believe world called Techie Land. We also assume that because a Georgia fan is talking about recruiting classes, they are bragging about their past success and that they are just assuming they always will get the best players because of who they are. We never take the time to think that the Georgia fan may have actually done some research on this year’s actual class and may have been responding to some Tech fan’s blind statement without having done so.

I recently read where Coach Johnson said that Tech will try to add a couple more signees to the list. We now have 17 and if we could go up to 25 it seems that we could easily add 7-8 signees and have a very strong class. I hope we do so, and I hope that one of them is a very good kicker.

You’re comments are ludicrous. First, you maintain that Dallas Lee ‘hurt’ his recruiting rankings by committing to Georgia early. You make it sound as if there were some monetary loss involved. He did not hurt his chances. He gained a scholarship to play at the school he loves.

To Cro25: Thanks for your feedback. Yes, in my opinion, Ealey looked “average” vs. Wilkinson County. And even Ealey himself admitted as much, after the game. He was very frustrated he could not do more to help the team (due to injuries), but he was glad ECI won. I expect Ealey to have a banner day vs. Wesleyan. Wilkinson County had one of the top five defenses I’ve seen in nearly 25 years of covering HS sports. Speed, speed, speed …

Flowery Branch is going to beat Cairo and it is not going to be close. QB Conner Shaw is even more talented than older brother and Tech QB Jaybo. The offense has been unstoppable under his direction. When Conner isn’t gashing teams by running or passing he’ll be handing off to the unstoppable one-two punch of Daniel Drummond and freshman Imani Cross. Cairo doesn’t have a single player on their defensive unit capable of stopping the powerful and explosive Drummond.
Drummond will also be huge on defense. Izaan Cross will team up with Drummond to terrorize the Cairo QB. Greg Palmer and Rod Frazier will keep things under control up top.
Buford will win a second consecutive state crown. Like last year the game wont be much of one. It’ll be over by halftime.
Look for Flower Branch to become a consistent pipeline for triple-option talent headed to Georgia Tech.

Daniel Drummond is an absolute beast. At 6-3 and 240 lbs of muscle he is the prototypical B Back. He has the power the make it through the line of scrimmage then the speed to pull away from the secondary. He’s level headed and is not cocky in the least. He’ll be a great fit for Tech both on and off the field.
Izaan is also a stud. He’s a big 6-4 end with enough athleticism to dunk a basketball. Think Michael Johnson type. I think he’ll follow Daniel to Tech.
His younger brother Imani is a future star. He’s just a freshman but he’s been gashing AAA defenses all season. He’ll be the featured back when Daniels gone.
Don’t overlook junior QB Conner Shaw. I agree with Insider, he’s more talented than Jaybo. Unfortunately while Jaybo was at the Branch he was forced to provide most of the yards by himself. Conner is quickly becoming adept at running the show by spreading the ball among many weapons. By the time Nesbitt is finshed at Tech look for Conner to beat out his big brother for the starting job.
I think our boys at the Branch will dispatch Cairo and win the first state crown for the school and the county. We simply have too many D-1 level weapons for Cairo to handle. With huge road victories at traditional AAA powers Baldwin Co. and LaGrange we are peaking at just the right time.

Other programs at UGA (offered to athletes only)
School of food science- Biscuit eating and advanced gravy development, Applied Science of Hamburger Helper, Advances in Grits.
School of Poultry Science- Chicken and Dressing preparation, Advanced Chicken Strip development. KFC training and placement program.
Live Stock Management focused degree programs- Advanced Cow Milking, Applied Hawg Slop Science. Goat hearding and management.
With all the diverse programs of study suited for the student athlete with the lowest SAT scores, UGA has a program for the best football players in the state.

Wow sounds like the Cairo/Branch game is already decided! Ok Ok so maybe we don’t have the most D-1 players in the state, but we still win. Cairo was runner-up last year and is 13-0 this year. We have played the state champs and won, played 2 teams that have had SUPER 11 players, played teams that are taller and bigger than UGA, but we still win. The Branch is a great story this year but your team has not seen a better duel QB and a better speed team this year, and you add the fact that your team has not played in The Dome before, I think Cairo wins 28-14

Why is Michael Carvell(Recruiting Page)the only blog master on the AJC who sets reasonable standards for posters/posts? No objectionable “screen names” or inappropriate comments. There is no “freedom of speech” issue; just common decency and public protection from exposure to adolescent potty-mouths. Is he the only one with cajones? Apparently so.

Turk,
Drummond transferred under the “No Child Left Behind” rule. West Halls’ test scores are not up to par, so therefore he was able to transfer to any school in the county with qualifying test scores(Flowery Branch, North Hall, Gainesville, or Chestatee). maker fan,
you make good points. I think the perfect record may hurt your team though. Without having a loss yet this season they haven’t had a chance to respond in the face of adversity.
It is true that we haven’t played in the Dome. But I think traveling over 1,000 miles in the playoffs to play in cold outdoor stadiums will prove tougher than playing an hour down the road in an dome.
I am excited to see both of our teams show off their speed on Field Turf. You mention your dual-threat QB. Our defense has been practicing against a dual threat QB (Conner Shaw) all season and Izaan Cross and Daniel Drummond are stud DEs who will not allow your QB to run out of the pocket.
All in all I think the teams match up nicely. It will definitely be a great game. The boys at the Branch aren’t intimidated by perfect records or post-season pedigree. We will down another AAA power in Cairo.
By Branch Fan

In reference to the maker fan’s post:
You make several correct assertions. It is true that we haven’t played in the Dome. We haven’t faced a true dual-threat QB. Your team is 13-0 and a perennial AAA playoff stalwart. These things will work in our favor.
The fact that your team is undefeated works great for us. The boys have grown to embrace their role as the rowdy underdogs. Frequently in sports the underdog enjoys the “nobody believed in us!” role and uses the added motivation to propel themselves to victory. See: New York Giants.
While the boys at the Branch haven’t faced a true dual-threat QB they have the personnel to deal with one. Izaan Cross and Daniel Drummond are the most athletic pair of defensive ends your offensive line has faced. They will contain your QB and force him into making costly errors.
We have a lot of respect for Cairo but I think we will upset them come Saturday.

Can we stop the myth that Ga Tech only recruits players with a brain. Reggie Ball was the face of Ga Tech for 4 years and he never would have got in school at UGA. The face of UGA was David Greene and D.J. Shockley. This is evidence that the atheletes with brains choose UGA. When I think Tech I think The university of Reggie Ball.
