Georgia Tech commitments playing in state championship games

Two Georgia Tech commits, Daniel Drummond of Flowery Branch and Emanuel County Institute’s J.C. Lanier, will compete for state championships at the Georgia Dome this weekend.
Lanier and his ECI teammates will attempt to defend their Class A crown. And for Drummond, Saturday’s Class AAA contest against Cairo is his first opportunity to play for a state title.
“Heck, this is my first year going to the playoffs and my first time to play at the Dome,” said Drummond, who rushed for 248 yards and three touchdowns during the Falcons’ Class AAA semifinal victory at LaGrange on Friday. “I expect it to be loud and crazy in there.”
Flowery Branch wasn’t one of the popular preseason choices to make a run at the Class AAA title. But the unranked Falcons wound up exceeding Drummond’s expectations.
“It’s just super amazing,” he said. “I wasn’t really sure if we were going to make it here. But we’re peaking at the right time. Our defense is playing really well, and everything is clicking. Our offensive line played great against LaGrange. We exploded against them.”
Drummond, who hopes to take his official visit to Georgia Tech on Dec. 19, has managed to find time to stay in touch with some of his future coaches during a hectic postseason schedule.
“[Tech assistant] coaches [Geoff] Smith and [Jeff] Monken came by on Friday,” he said. “And we’ve actually had a few different schools come by everyday to watch practice.”
The Jackets are courting one of Drummond’s senior teammates, defensive end Izaan Cross. They have also offered a scholarship to Flowery Branch junior quarterback Connor Shaw, the younger brother of Tech quarterback Jaybo Shaw.

GA will always have big name recruits but I’m starting to notice MR having some of the same problems his mentor had at Fla. State. They seem to have alot of players being arrested and then just recieve a slap on the wrist. MR has proven he is a good football coach. He is a better coach now that Dooley ever was. I think he realized this year that he was too soft in several different areas. I’m glad to know that PJ will never find himself in this position. I guess now we have to wait and see if Mark learns from his mistakes. If he doesn’t he won’t win a national champianship without a bunch of luck, like Dooly did.
