Clemson charging hard for Henry County WR Jamal Patterson

Henry County wide receiver Jamal Patterson, an AJC Georgia 150 player who is committed to Stanford, got an in-home visit Tuesday from Clemson assistant Ron West, according to Henry County coach Mike Rozier. Patterson now plans to visit Clemson the second week in January, Rozier said.
“Clemson is coming on pretty strong right now,” Rozier said. “I think [Jamal] has opened up the door a little bit. I think they lose some receivers, and with Dabo [Sweeno, the new head coach], they’re committed to throwing downfield. They always liked him. He was their No. 1 recruit.”
But Rozier believes Clemson remains a long shot to sign his receiver. “I think it will be Stanford,” Rozier said. Georgia Tech has offered Patterson, while UGA has expressed heavy interest but not offered.
Patterson caught 56 passes for 960 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Patterson will be playing in the Under Armour All-Star game Jan. 4 in Orlando.

Getting accepted into Stanford is like hitting the lottery. The kid or his parents would have to be fools to turn down a Stanford education for Clemson. Then again, who knows what a school like Clemson will do to haul this one in.

You are correct that attending Stanford would be a wise move for most any student athlete. However, you fail to factor in the 4,000 mile commute, which, for most 18 - 19 year olds, may not make it as attractive once they realize what they are doing. Plus, even at Stanford, or any big or small time football playing school, the competition gets exponentially better, and with momma miles away there is always a “fear factor” that affects many kids regarding “am I good enough to play.
Also, what do you mean by “who knows what a school like Clemson will do to haul this one in”? If I recall correctly, Clemson has not been accused of any malfeasance with the football team in recent memory, unlike UGA, Tech, AL, AU, and probably any number of other ACC and SEC schools. Please back up your insinuations, if you must make them.

A Stanford diploma is very strong. I think if the kid leaves this great state, it would be for Stanford. It would be a very wise decision. Good Luck!

If academics is your priority and playing in front of 25k unenthusiastic fans, 5th fiddle behind USC, Cal, UCLA and Fresno St, then Stanford is the way to go.
