Caught on Tape: Ending of Lowndes-Grayson game continues to stir emotions

A man wearing a brown paper bag over his head voiced concerns over the behavior of the Lowndes football team at this week’s meeting of the Lowndes County Board of Education, according to the Valdosta Daily Times.

The man, who was identified as Ken Klanicki by the newspaper, expressed concerns about the “negative” behavior of the Lowndes players and coaches after the 17-7 loss to Grayson in the Class AAAAA quarterfinals on Nov. 28.

Several videos were posted on YouTube showing the actions of Lowndes players during the game.

It led to open discussion at Monday’s meeting of the Lowndes County BOE.

“I urge you not to believe everything written by the (Valdosta Daily Times) editorial board or what is on the Internet,” Mike Fletcher was quoted as saying.

Lowndes was heavily favored against Grayson. Lowdnes has won three out of the last four state championships in the state’s largest division, and was considered the top contender for this year’s title. The loss to Grayson was the first loss of the season for Lowndes.

In a written statement last week, Superintendent Dr. Steve Smith said most of the complaints came from people in the [Atlanta area].

I will not pull for Lowdnes again.

Unfortunately, the fighting, attitude and poor sportsmanship has been a problem at Lowndes since the early 80’s. I witnessed this while playing in this region in the late 80’s and having two other brothers playing years later all at Colquitt County. There were constant brawls started by Lowndes in football and baseball back then and it seems nothing has changed today. And before you call what I’m saying “sour grapes,” you should know that we dominated them back then. The road to region titles back then went through Valdosta, and we never had a problem with fights or attitudes when we played them in any sport.

I have a son in the Lowndes school system and a wife that teaches there. Something needs to be done now to correct this.

Lowndes High school did more to hurt their image in a single game than any school has in a long time. It was not one event, it was the attitude of the team the entire game. As for me being a Norrth Ga. fan with a chip on my shoulder, that is untrue. Maybe a little envy of their success, but I did have respect for their program. Valdasta started the year with an honor, and an ESPN award, and then they ended with a huge blemish.

The head coach should be fired, players should be suspended. Classless bunch. South Georgia, what more do you expect. Like the caption said embarassing. South Georgia is a different world.

TO CHAD Speaking as a man who grew up in coastal Georgia and played football, I am offended by your remark. What Lowndes did was unacceptable and that behavior starts from the top. We would NEVER have been allowe to disaply that kind of behavior and by the time playoff time came it wouldn’t even had been an issue. I attended college and played basketball in north Georgia and went to some games. Bad behavior is not something just coming from south Georgia. Last time I checked Atlanta was quite a haven for criminals and crime in the nation.

CHAD!

south ga is a different world where the vikings are kings! maybe you should be fired for being a moron!

and to ccpacker

considering the character of the coach cc just hired, dont you think you should shut up too?

By ccpacker

Viking4ever is an example of the people who allow this stuff to happen. The new coach at CC has done nothing out of character on the field, and wouldn’t stand back and allow his players to play like a bunch of gang members. He’d have a handful of jersey and be in their face about it. You can also bet that the player wouldn’t need to be thrown out of the game by the ref. Fact is that Lowndes’ coaches are a joke when it comes to controlling the team. As I said above, that’s been the case for decades. Lowndes is an embarrassment to all of south Georgia when they act like this. I hate to say this with Valdosta High as our primary rival over the years, but they at least could handle success and defeat on the field without acting like a bunch of thugs. Credit to their line of coaches.

You know as I sit here and watch CC (im assumeing thats camdon county}I can only say that it’s a good thing that Lowndes didn’t get to the dome. After seeing the video and read the posts I have to agree the coach should be repremanded at the very least and the players should be suspended from any sports activity at all . You know good sportsmanship starts at the head coach and goes down from there. It looks to me as if the Viking players run the program whitch is a discrace. But I guess thats the south Ga I’ve allways heard about.Personally my son plays for Mike O’Brian at Woodstock HS.You people in south Ga might rember him.I know Camdon County does they only beat us by one point. There was no fight and the Camdon fan’s were were great and had lots of class. So all this being said I wish Camdon County all the luck in the world GO CATS!!!In parting the Lowndes BOE needs to stop worrying about winning football games and teach young men how to be young men and good sports.Oh and by the way Vikings there are a few teams in Texas that know what sportsmanship is that would beat you 50-0 without breaking a sweat

viking4ever,you are the type of person that loves this kind of behavior and attitude! If you rule(in sports),you don’t have to kick your opponent when he’s on the ground. As the CSS announcer said(and I’m paraphrasing),a team who wins with dignity should lose with dignity.Lowndes apparantely doesn’t do either! And the head coach stood staring toward the field and didn’t show any emotion as his thug player walked to the bench still jawing and ripping tape from his arm.Looked as if the coach’s attitude was,if we can’t win the game,we can win the fight and I want a view from the 50 yard line. The player should be suspended from other sports, the coach should be fired(or strongly reprimanded publicly). All of Lowndes opponents should be allowed to kick the thug and the coach publicly! How would that make you feel idiot? The Lowndes Board of Education should issue an apology to the Lowndes opponent. So viking4ever, you are not just a Viking forever, but an a* and a troublemaker forever apparently.

Three of the Lowndes school board members must have been the same three idiots that voted against the death penalty on the Brian Nichols jury. The entire state already has formed their opinions about the Lowndes program (and they are not favorable). The Lowndes school board needs to address the problem quickly and severely. This will brand Lowndes for a number of years as thugs. If this is not addressed then it says the Lowndes school board supports what their football thugs did. You guys have some fine representives of your community And remember the whold state is watching

It is always interesting to see what the players are doing a few after they graduate. Most players are attending college, some have joined the workforce. My guess for the Lowndes team is that most of them will be serving time.

cc packer fan you have a real gem for a coach that will be listening to the first two games at home next year ! for the record lowndes board of education has already ruled to forfeit any chance of a region title next season. (rightly so )

By CC

December 15, 2008 11:03 AM | Link to this

Actually the coach will be watching for one game. Get your facts straight. And it was for disputing a horrible call which is not nearly in the same category of letting your players start fights and push coaches of the other team and do NOTHING about it. Regardless of what the BOE has done regarding region titles, the coach did NOTHING!

Yes, I was the jerk with the bag over my head. And, yes, I don’t leave home without it. Next I’ve gotta outfit the Lowndes Board of Education with bags, too. Black bags. This incident has besmirched every athletic accomplishment of Lowndes County for the last thirty years prior and as far into the future as anyone cares to gaze. Very troubling attitudes prevail in what is, otherwise, a very good school system with dedicated staff and faculty. If this coach had any kahones, he’d resign and take his $105,000 salary and his sorry asst. coaches with him. DISGRACEFUL!

I am a Lowndes fan, and was totally embarassed by the actions of our players. After seeing the antics on the field over the last few years, I knew something like this would happen sooner or later. Our players have had their egos boosted by the fans for years as being unbeatable. Our superstar was kicked off the team in the preseason for cussing a coach and allowed to return to the team. I knew this would come back to bite the program at some point. We were beat down by the Cats for so long, and now are consistently beating them, our fans think that we are God’s gift to football. Don’t get me wrong. I love the Vikings, but my respect for the program is spiraling downward. If something is not done to control these young men’s actions, it will only get worse. I think that Coach M has done a tremendous job on X’s and O’s, but he is in desparate need of learning how to control the players. Maybe 2009 will show some improvement. Lets hope so.

and so the bandwaggoneers start to jump…good,,we need some more open seats on the home side to open up. first “lowndes fans”,, not one “fan” has said it was ok for what the players or coaches did. second, its kids,, youre a “adult” who cant just drop it and move on. dont like the way the kids act? dont go to the game screaming at the refs who make a call you dont like,, dont attack the refs who “cost” your team the game. we “adults” created the “monster” of expecting the kids of every school to win and win now. you say coach mac should have been in solomons face? if it were your kid, if the coach had been in his face youd be the first to say “he cant do that to my kid in public” and we’d b talking about that instead. i know,, i know…”my kid wouldnt do that!” your kid doenst drink, smoke, have sex either,,sorta like you didnt do anything back in school.

You know i have watched this lowndes video several times and still i miss some of the so called action. I am not a lowndes supporter and in no way condone the actions of this team, but let me say that their behavior is no worse than countless teams that i could name. Is it right no should they be held accountable yes but to keep saying they are the only ones to have expressed their feelings the wrong way is not right. My team has played in games before when there would be a brawl and u chalk it up to kids. Should this haunt them the rest of their lives NO. Should the whole program be suspended no. When I look at the film I do see Lowndes coaches trying to get their team back to the side line am I the only one to see this?

Could you people please take off the blinders? Good Lord!!. I have been a fan of high school football for over 40 years. In those 40 years of watching games almost every Friday, I have only seen one other team come off of the bench and try to “BOW UP” as our Vikings did that night. The mentality of our players is one of ” We are better than anyone else in the world, and it is not right for us to lose”. Again, I say it is egos boosted by the fans, the adminsitration,. and the staff. And when antics are carried out all through the season, and nothing is ever done, it will only get worse. If something is not done by our staff to curtail the actions of the players, you will see the same thing happen next season. I will always be a Viking, but I am somewhat disgusted. As much as I love to beat the heck out of the CATS, and Lord knows, we have done that alot lately, I can’t help but reflect back to all of the CAT games that I have gone to when we could not make the playoffs, and watched them win with class, and certainly lose with class as well. We have taken over as the team to beat in Valdosta, now let’s act like Valdosta has always acted…with class.

Proud of the Lowndes High Vikings…the most feared yet hated high school team in the State of Georgia. Hated and feared for a reason…cause they are THE BEST. The hypocritical thugs on this blog come out to bash us and we appreciate your hypocritical inputs. Lets see..calling someone an idiot…I’m sure our players can learn a lot from that “hero”. The real issue. We remain the best and will continue to be the best and you can’t stand that fact. We learn from our mistakes and will learn from this one. That is why we will continue to be one of the classiest programs in the state of Georgia. With one of the best and classiest coaches not just in Ga. but in the nation. We are proud of our team our coaches and that our players will learn from this mistake they have made. We are proud of our accomplishments, our tradition and THE VIKINGS will not be going away any time soon. Deal with it! You can hate on us, but you will not change that fact. We will continue to be your worst nightmare on the football field because when it is all said and done we will out block, out tackle and out score you. Deal with it!

Yo: 17-7. Scoreboard!

Could not have been two teams further from each other on the class scale that night. Coach Conn is the epitome of class. LHS got what they deserved and that was a long, sad bus ride back to Valdosta.

Let’s also not lose sight of the fact that Grayson not only beat Lowndes on the field, they restrained themselves and let LHS implode without their help. Kudos to Grayson; shame on Lowndes.

Hey Yo! You are an “idiot” too. Your players and coaches should learn that if you kick someone when they are on the ground, idiot is a very kind word to call them. What I think of your coach and his behavior can’t be printed here.Your team wasn’t best on that night-you got your “South Georgia” asses kicked and I’m glad!Yo,Yo,Yo-Merry Christmas and a worse year next season!!!!

We should forget about north and south georgia and talk about young men and acceptable behavior . Before the game players should be alerted that .” player that displays unprofessional play or actions will be immediately removed from play by the coach and/or officials. Likewise the coach should be ejected if he allows continued inappropriate actions. A strong penalty for the player and coach should be enforced by GHA.
