Northview’s Denzel McCoy has 20 early offers

When Northview junior Denzel McCoy attended Georgia Tech’s game against visiting Miami last month, he already had a scholarship offer from the Yellow Jackets.

Now he has one from the Hurricanes, too, in addition to offers from LSU, Florida State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Georgia Tech, Maryland and Oregon.

Miami’s offer to the 6-foot-5, 270-pound tackle brought his total offers to about 20, but McCoy said he does not plan to start narrowing down schools until spring.

“I’m glad to have another option, and I’d like to see what [Miami has] not only athletically, but academically as well,” he said. “I see making a decision some time around spring, so then I can stay focused on my senior season.”

Spurrier tells Stone Mountain LB that he’s No. 1 on wishlist

Stone Mountain linebacker Robert Nelson, an AJC Georgia 150 prospect, said he has narrowd his list of colleges to South Carolina, West Virginia and Purdue, all schools with which he plans to schedule official visits.

The biggest reason? Contact. South Carolina, which has recruited him since he attended the Gamecocks Showcase camp summer, calls at least once a week. Purdue and West Virginia are frequent callers, too, and were expected to make visits to see Nelson (6-0, 211) at Stone Mountain High this week.

Here are his impressions on what he likes about the three programs.

South Carolina: Nelson was impressed by a sitdown meeting with head coach Steve Spurrier last summer, during which Spurrier said South Carolina “was in dire need of people who can tackle.” Nelson stood out at the invitation-only camp. “They said I was their No. 1 linebacker recruit [at the camp].”

West Virginia: The Mountaineers run the same 3-5 defense in which Nelson averaged more than 15 tackles per game this past season. “I know all of the linebacker responsibilities in the 3-5 defense,” he said.

Purdue: The Boilermakers call every week and their interest has made an impact. “They’re very persistent,” Nelson said. “I like the fact they’ve very interested in me.”

Nelson also claims offers from Auburn, Troy, Florida State, North Carolina, Tennessee, among others.

UGA invites McEachern TE Terrell Mitchell on recruiting trip

McEachern tight end Terrell Mitchell said he will be making an official visit to Georgia in January.

The 6-foot-6, 225-pound Mitchell said he met with UGA assistant John Lilly, who is in the process of setting up the recruiting trip. Mitchell will make an official visit to Kentucky this weekend, and he is scheduled to travel to UGA and Clemson in January (dates to be determined).

Mitchell said earlier Monday he was led to believe that UGA had offered a scholarship during his conversation with Lilly. However, McEachern coach Kyle Hockman told the AJC later that evening that, to the best of his knowledge, UGA was still evaluating Mitchell for a scholarship offer.

Mitchell finished the 2008 season with 25 receptions and eight touchdowns. Rivals.com ranks Mitchell as the 35th best tight end in the country.

Miller Grove WR turns down Georgia Tech, Clemson track offers

Miller Grove two-sport star Kenneth Gilstrap committed to a dual scholarship offer from Middle Tennessee State, he reported via text message Monday.

The commitment came after Gilstrap made an official visit to Middle Tennessee State over the weekend. He turned down a two-sport offer from Western Kentucky to go with the Blue Raiders. The two schools were the only ones to offer for both track and football. Gilstrap plays receiver and defensive back in football.

Gilstrap, who has 4.31 speed in the 40 and a sprinter in track, had track offers from Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas State and Louisville. His football offers were less stellar, with Ohio, Richmond and Alabama-Birmingham on the list.

Gilstrap said the offers were similar from Middle Tennessee State and Western Kentucky, but had a better feeling to go with the Murfreesboro, Tenn., school.

“They didn’t rush my decision,” he said, adding that his family favored Middle Tennessee State, too. “They had everything I wanted in a school and I see them being big time next year. …

“They knew I was a better athlete than everyone thinks. They feel I’m a diamond in the rough and know I’m a big-school guy in football, so I picked them.”

Georgia Tech expected to offer M.L. King’s Kight

M.L. King coach Corey Jarvis believes a scholarship offer will be forthcoming from Georgia Tech for his talented senior linebacker, Joel Kight.

Kight will take official visits to Oklahoma State this weekend and Georgia Tech on Dec. 19.

“They are really leaning toward offering him,” Jarvis said Monday evening. “When he goes [to Tech] next weekend, I think they will offer. That’s based on me talking to [Tech assistant] coaches [Brian] Jean-Mary and [Brian] Bohannon.”

Ironically, Jarvis thinks Kight’s ability to play on either side of the ball has contributed to a delay in an offer from the Jackets.

“I think the biggest drawback is that Joel can play linebacker or running back on that level,” Jarvis said. “And they’ve been trying to decide. I think he’ll probably end up being a running back for them.”

If Tech offers, they will join Boston College, Oklahoma State and Ole Miss are his favorites.

Kight was scheduled to host four different in-home visits on Monday. Coaches from Boston College, Oklahoma State, Tech and UAB were expected to stop by for visits throughout the afternoon and early evening.

M.L. King RB offered by Georgia Tech on Monday

M.L. King junior Mack Brown received a scholarship offer from Georgia Tech on Monday, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound tailback said.

“Coach Brian Jean-Mary came to the school and offered me a scholarship,” Brown said. “I had no idea they were going to offer me, because I’m only a junior.”

Brown now has five offers, including Oregon, Louisville, Arkansas and Duke.

“My coach said there are other schools that have shown an interest like Florida and Alabama,” he said.

Brown does not have any official visits scheduled and he does not anticipate committing until signing day of 2010.

“I don’t really have a top choice,” he said. “I want to see what my options are and talk to my family.”

Brown, one of the state’s top juniors, rushed for 1,700 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2008. Brown’s teammate Joel Kight, a senior linebacker, has an official visit scheduled to Georgia Tech next weekend. Kight has not been offered, but feels like the Yellow Jackets may offer during his recruiting trip.

Three Georgia Tech coaches visit Jefferson County DE Crenshaw

Georgia Tech pulled out the big guns Monday afternoon when coach Paul Johnson, defensive coordinator Dave Wommack and defensive line coach traveled to Louisville to meet with Jefferson County defensive end Chris Crenshaw.

“It went real good,” said Crenshaw, who committed to the Jackets over the summer. “We talked about my official visit to Georgia Tech coming up this weekend.

“And we basically talked about school and football.”

Crenshaw was ecstatic to welcome three Tech coaches to his hometown for a visit that lasted just under 30 minutes.

“For them to show up at school, it’s kind of big seeing them here,” he said. “It’s kind of like it was for [former teammate] A.J. Harmon here last year. It’s just a real good feeling.”

The Tech coaches also spent time chatting with Jefferson County junior cornerback Barry Bostic, who recently received a scholarship offer from the Jackets.

Tennessee recruit Toney Williams returns from Kentucky visit

Milton fullback Toney Williams finds himself just looking to have a good time when he’s visiting a school. And that’s exactly what the Tennessee commitment found in Lexington, Ky.

“They’re just really down to earth people,” said Williams, who is verbally committed to the Vols. “I had a great time. It was fun. It’s a program on the rise. It’s would be cool to be a part of that.”

Williams has meet with new UT coach Lane Kiffin and liked the prospects of being in a pro-style offense. But the Eagles senior wanted to give UK offensive coordinator Joker Phillips and the Wildcats a chance on an official visit this past weekend.

“I went to a basketball game and really got to get a feel for the town,” Williams said. “It’s a nice place. In the end, I’m just going to let my heart tell me where to go. I’m just going up there [to Knoxville] and try to have a good time.”

Williams will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., this weekend for his official visit with the Vols.

Valdosta’s Foster to visit Georgia Tech on Dec. 13

Valdosta offensive lineman Antonio Foster, who de-commited from Tennessee to Georgia Tech, will visit the Tech campus on Dec. 13.

Foster, who has several family members in the Atlanta area, said once he de-commited from the Vols, jumping in with Georgia Tech made the most sense.

“They were still recruiting me the whole time,” Foster said. “I started thinking that it might be good for me to stay in state. And I have a lot of people on my mom’s side of the family who live in DeKalb County, so I come to Atlanta a lot anyway.”

Foster said he was ecstatic about the Jacket’s victory against Georgia and was at Bobby Dodd Stadium to witness Tech’s blowout of Miami two weeks ago. He said he is intrigued about lining up in Paul Johnson’s triple-option offense.

“It will take a little time to get used to it, but I think it will be a good fit for me,” Foster said. “I’m excited about it.”

Kight said in a text message Sunday that he’ll visit Oklahoma State this weekend, his second official visit. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound visited Boston College last month and came away impressed.

He said he’ll visit with Tech the following weekend, even though Tech has yet to make an offer.

He’s also expected to eventually visit Ole Miss, but that date has not been set up.

Kight. who led MLK in tackles this season (114 in 11 games), also has offers from Connecticut, Duke, Miami-Ohio, Indiana and Arizona State, but has listed Boston College, Ole Miss and Oklahoma State as his leaders.

Where will the recruiting trail carry Georgia Tech coaches on Monday?

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson and offensive line coach Giff Smith will travel to Jefferson County High, located between Louisville and Wrens, on Monday to visit Chris Crenshaw, a member of the Jackets’ current recruiting class.

Crenshaw confirmed by a text message on Sunday that Johnson and Smith are scheduled to visit him.

The two coaches are also expected to spend time chatting with Crenshaw’s cousin, junior cornerback Barry Bostic.

It will be Smith’s second trip to Jefferson County in the past five days.

“I got to talk to coach Smith on Wednesday when he came by the school to see Chris,” said Bostic, who received a scholarship offer from the Jackets following their victory over Florida State this season.

“Then coach Smith went over to Chris’ house.”

The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Bostic is also being heavily recruited by Florida. He recently received an invitation to attend the Gators’ junior day in January.

Mary Persons OL Hamlin will commit to Florida on Tuesday, if offered

Florida offensive coordinator Dan Mullen is scheduled to visit Mary Persons High School on Tuesday to speak with offensive tackle Jadareius Hamlin.

“If Florida offers, I would take it in heartbeat,” the member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150 said.

The 6-foot-3, 248-pound Hamlin has official visits scheduled for Troy State on Dec. 12, Alabama-Birmingham on Jan. 9 and a tentative date for Middle Tennessee State on Jan. 16.

“I’m going to wait and take all my visits before committing, unless Florida offers,” he said.

Both UGA and Georgia Tech have requested film of Hamilin, but yet to offer.

Hamlin plays defensive end and offensive tackle for Mary Persons. He said he is primarily being recruited as an offensive lineman.

One of nation’s top RBs for 2010 has UGA among top three

Marcus Lattimore of Duncan, S.C., has 20 offers and is a candidate to be the nation’s No. 1 tailback for 2010.

At one time or another, Lattimore has said either Clemson, South Carolina or Georgia have been his leader. However, Lattimore told The State (S.C.) Newspaper that while he is still considering those three schools, he’s going to consider all colleges.

“I’m going to open all my options back up as I continue to get more offers,” Lattimore told The State. “I just want everyone to know they have a fair shot at me. I just don’t want to be one college. In the summer I’m probably going to have a top five and then make my decision at the Army All American Game.”
