Miller Grove WR turns down Georgia Tech, Clemson track offers

Miller Grove two-sport star Kenneth Gilstrap committed to a dual scholarship offer from Middle Tennessee State, he reported via text message Monday.
The commitment came after Gilstrap made an official visit to Middle Tennessee State over the weekend. He turned down a two-sport offer from Western Kentucky to go with the Blue Raiders. The two schools were the only ones to offer for both track and football. Gilstrap plays receiver and defensive back in football.
Gilstrap, who has 4.31 speed in the 40 and a sprinter in track, had track offers from Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas State and Louisville. His football offers were less stellar, with Ohio, Richmond and Alabama-Birmingham on the list.
Gilstrap said the offers were similar from Middle Tennessee State and Western Kentucky, but had a better feeling to go with the Murfreesboro, Tenn., school.
“They didn’t rush my decision,” he said, adding that his family favored Middle Tennessee State, too. “They had everything I wanted in a school and I see them being big time next year.
“They knew I was a better athlete than everyone thinks. They feel I’m a diamond in the rough and know I’m a big-school guy in football, so I picked them.”

This is a shame. Kenny had good offers at great universities. I’m sad to see that it sounds like he chose the school that buttered him up the most and told him he was a star. To Kenny I say good luck in life; I hope you made the right decision.

With all due respect, being “comfortable” is not a good criteria if you are trying to push yourself to be better in academics, athletics, business, your faith, etc. Doing what is “not comfortable” is what makes you better.

The kid wants to play football. What’s wrong with that? Just because the kid turns a schollie down from Tech doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with that. Get over yourselves Tech fans. There’s more to life than an engineering degee…and this is coming from an PE & SE, so please spare me your condescending remarks.

Coming from someone who knows both Kenny Gilstrap and MTSU I think he made a great choice. MTSU may not be big name D1 school now but athletes like Gilstrap and Malcolm Beyah they will be on the rise. And as far as track goes, MTSU has one of the best standing programs in the south with a Hall of Fame coach. DO NOT UNDER ESTIMATE THE BLUE RAIDERS!

hivertech…sounds like that came right out of a text book or pulpit. He can buckel down at MTSU just as easy and with satisfaction when the time comes. He’s 18 yrs old. Have some fun first. He likes the school and made a decision. Seems like he is doing exactly what you wanted him to do. For Kenny this may have been the most difficult decision he has made up to this point in his young life. One man’s crap is another man’s ice cream.
