Westlake QB Lewis Kindle picks up first offer

It took a little while, but Westlake quarterback Lewis Kindle picked up his first scholarship offer last week from Alcorn State, the alma mater of former NFL quarterback Steve McNair.

After a solid senior season, Kindle has a number of suitors, including Troy, Middle Tennessee State, Tennessee-Martin and Eastern Kentucky. But he didn’t get an official offer until the Braves called last week. Alcorn also has offered Mays two-way star Meyer Nolan.

“We’re very excited,” said Kindle’s father, Lewis Kindle Sr. “We’ll see if any other offers come in, but we’re very pleased with Alcorn State.”

Miller Grove speedster postpones Monday college decision

Miller Grove two-sport standout Kenneth Gilstrap originally planned to make a verbal commitment to a college scholarship Monday, but decided he wanted more time.

“I decided to hold off my commitment,” he said via text message Monday. “After I evaluated some things, it made me think things over.”

Gilstrap didn’t elaborate, but he did say last week that Western Kentucky, the lone school to offer him scholarships in football and track, was “still my leader.” He also visited Middle Tennessee State this past weekend, and was invited to watch Georgia Tech play Miami last Thursday night.

Gilstrap, who has 4.31 speed in the 40, is a blue-chip track prospect as a sprinter with track offers from Tech, South Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas State and Louisville and Western Kentucky. His football offers include Western Kentucky, Ohio, Richmond, Middle Tennessee and Alabama-Birmingham. Gilstrap can play receiver, kick returner and defensive back in football.

Perry OL Farms switches commitment from South Carolina to North Carolina

Perry offensive guard Johnnie Farms, a member of the AJC’s Super 11, de-committed from South Carolina this weekend and committed to North Carolina after his official visit to Chapel Hill, N.C.

“I talked with [UNC] coach Butch Davis for hours and it just felt right,” said Farms, a 6-foot-3, 306-pound member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150. “My family and I fell in love with it.”

Farms said he notified South Carolina assistant coach Robert Gillespie of his decision.

“He was real disappointed,” he said. “He still wants me to come out and take my official visit.”

Farms said he currently has no intentions of taking an official visit to South Carolina.

Despite the Tar Heels’ 41-10 loss to N.C. State on Saturday, Farms said he sees potential in UNC’s football program.

“They need help on the offensive line,” he said. “They were just flat Saturday and N.C. State came to play.”

Farms said he talked with the coaches, went bowling with the players and toured the campus.

“It was awesome,” he said. “I felt at home there and the education is a little better than South Carolina.”

Farms committed to South Carolina on Sept. 29. Alabama was his top choice, but Crimson Tide coaches told him they were “full” at his position.

Rivals.com ranks Farms as the 8th best offensive guard in the nation.

Alabama makes advances with Tennessee recruit Toney Williams

With his commitment to Tennessee hanging in the balance, Milton fullback Toney Williams has accepted an invitation from Alabama to attend the Crimson Tide’s home game against rival Auburn on Saturday.

“I like what they’re doing at Alabama,” said Williams, who scored five touchdowns in Milton’s first round playoff loss to East Paulding on Nov. 14. “It’s my kind of football.”

Williams, who is scheduled to visit Kentucky on Dec. 5, said a scholarship offer from the Tide would certainly get his attention. But he’s eager to see who Tennessee names as coach Phillip Fulmer’s successor.

“[An offer from Alabama] would change things,” he said. “But I’m still waiting to see what Tennessee will do. It will probably be the middle of December [when they name a new coach].”

As for Georgia Tech, there seems to be little activity between Williams and the Jackets.

“There’s really nothing going on with me and Georgia Tech right now,” he said.

AJC Super 11’s Jarvis Jones undergoes season-ending surgery

Carver-Columbus linebacker Jarvis Jones, an AJC Super 11 selection and one of the nation’s top uncommitted prospects, watched his team’s playoff win over Woodward Academy from the sidelines this past weekend.

Jones broke his thumb in the first-round win over Crisp County and underwent season-ending surgery last week.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Jones has made one recruiting trip, traveling to USC. He told the AJC he will take his four remaining recruiting trips in January to Georgia, Florida, Texas, and LSU.

Jones recently made an unofficial visit to Florida, where he was heavily-courted by coach Urban Meyer. Said Jones,” [Meyer] said I was his No. 1 choice at middle linebacker.”

Mill Creek’s Jordan Johnson makes his commitment ‘official’

Mill Creek lineman Jordan Johnson went to Middle Tennessee State on Saturday and pulled aside head coach Rick Stockstill. Johnson told the coach what had been rumored last week and committed to the Blue Raiders.

“It’s kind of like a weight off my shoulders,” Johnson said Sunday. ‘I wasn’t able to talk to the coach this week but I went up there (Saturday) and got it done.”

Johnson, a 6-5, 262-pound tackle, said he would probably be redshirted his freshman year. He’d like to stay at tackle, but will play “wherever they need to put me.”

Johnson, who watched MTSU beat North Texas 52-13 on Saturday, has been to the Murfeesboro campus a couple of times, but has yet to take his official visit. He’ll talk with Stockstill and set that up in the next few weeks, he said.
