Will WR Rantavious Wooten back off UGA commitment?

There won’t be much celebrating at UGA about the commitment of Rantavious Wooten until National Signing Day on Feb. 4.

That’s when the speedy wide receiver from Belle Glade, Fla., will sign scholarship papers, and everyone will know for sure if he’s Georgia-bound. Wooten pulled his first surprise when he originally committed to LSU in August, because UGA was thought to be the leader. Then Wooten took an official visit to Athens last month and switched to UGA.

Yet there were many skeptics about Wooten’s switch because he kept such a low profile with various media outlets after making the big decision.

What’s the latest with Wooten? According to UGASports, Wooten now says he is planning to take an official visit to Florida. The 5-foot-10, 158-pound Wooten told that website that there is a “95-percent chance” he’ll end up signing with Georgia.

Atchison anticipates Florida offer after SEC championship

Douglass linebacker Jonathan Atchison, who has committed to Auburn, is expecting an offer from Florida after the SEC Championship on Dec. 6. Atchinson has been talking with Gators defensive coordinator Charlie Strong.

“Coach Strong wants to see me in person, and I’ll get the offer,” said Atchison, a 6-foot-3, 212-pound member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150. “I’ll be at the SEC Championship game, and then [Strong] is coming to my school that following Monday [on Dec. 8].”

Atchison has scheduled an official visit to No. 1 Alabama on Jan. 17. He will be attending the Auburn-Alabama game in Tuscaloosa on an unofficial visit on Nov. 29. He will take his official visit to Auburn on Jan. 10.

Rivals rates him the No. 22 outside linebacker in the country and No. 64 overall recruit in Georgia.

Recruiting Inside the Stat: Dublin’s Rashard Smith

20 - Yards per completion (8-for-16 for 166 yards) by Dublin’s Rashard Smith in last week’s 17-6 victory against Central Macon. Smith, a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150, has offers from Alabama-Birmingham, Auburn, Georgia Southern, North Carolina State and Vanderbilt. He talked about the Irish passing game with staff writer Jay Stone.

— On big plays in the passing game: “The OL is protecting well, as they have all year, and the receivers are catching the ball. With the wing-T, you don’t get a lot of chances to throw it, and they’re getting a lot of room to run with it.”

— On an 85-yard completion to teammate Anthony Thomas: “He ran a corner route and the safety jumped the wide receiver route, and that left the middle wide open. Anthony cut back to the middle.”

— On making 16 pass attempts: “That’s the most attempts I think I’ve had this year. That’s a lot in the wing-T.”

— On why threw as much as they did: “That’s what they were giving to us, but coach [Roger} Holmes said we needed to throw the ball more.”

UGA commitments support one another during playoffs

Several members of Georgia’s 2009 recruiting class have become fast friends.

Oconee County quarterback Zach Mettenberger said he and Chestatee linebacker Chase Vasser will go watch Buford lineman Dallas Lee play on Friday.

“Chase lives 30 minutes away, and we’ve become pretty good friends,” Mettenberger said.

All three are committed to Georgia, and plan to enroll in January.

Northview TE Brock Sanders talks about switch from Stanford to Tulane

Northview tight end Brock Sanders, who recently switched his commitment from Stanford to Tulane, said he understands how Milton fullback Toney Willliams must be feeling.

Sanders pledged in April to Stanford, but swapped last month to Tulane once the Cardinal waffled on accepting his grades. He would understand a similar move for Williams, who’s commitment to Tennessee is questionable now that Vols coach Philip Fulmer announced his decision not to return next season.

When Stanford told Sanders it wouldn’t decide whether to take him until January, he worried about not getting admitted too late to land a scholarship elsewhere. Similarly, if Williams stands by his commitment to the Vols, he might not fit into a new coach’s scheme and also wind up with less options.

“If I were Toney, I’d definitely be looking around,” Sanders said. “He has a lot more options than I did. For me, it came down to being guaranteed to play football next year. It was a 50-50 chance of getting into Stanford in January, then maybe having to walk on somewhere I didn’t want to go.

“There’s a point you have to do what’s right for you,” Sanders said, adding of Williams’ contemplating visits to Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma State, “I don’t see why you can’t flip-flop on commitment because the people you committed to [Fulmer] aren’t going to be there any more.”

Talent not an issue with Brunswick DB Darius Slay

It likely will go down to the last minute to see whether or not Brunswick defensive back Darius Slay will meet college entrance requirements.

But the 6-foot, 185-pound Slay is still one of the state’s best players and too good for colleges to ignore.

“We’ve got a handful of colleges willing to sign and place [Slay] into a junior college … South Carolina, Troy, Kentucky and Mississippi State are some of them,” Brunswick coach Victor Floyd said.

“His athleticism … he’s as probably good as anyone in the state. The college coaches say it only takes two or three plays to see that.”

Carver-Columbus OL Chris Hubbard schedules another visit

Carver-Columbus offensive guard Chris Hubbard is going to Alabama-Birmingham on an official visit on Dec. 5.

“Coach [Corey] Barlow invited me out there,” said the 6-foot-4, 250-pound Hubbard, a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150.

Hubbard has more than a dozen offers, including UCLA, Mississippi State and Duke. He made an official visit to UCLA last month.

“I’m still getting letters, but I’m kind of surprised there haven’t been more offers,” he said. “I guess it’s all kind of settling down right now.”

Hubbard said he expects to make his decision on signing day.
