How It Went: Centennial junior OL Yankey still being evaluated by Florida

Florida told Centennial offensive tackle David Yankey at Saturday’s game that it was still evaluating him before deciding on an early offer.
Yankey is expected to be one of the state’s top prospects for 2010. He and his teammate, senior defensive end Euclid Cummings, made an unofficial visit to Gainesville, Fla., on Saturday.
The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Yankey said he brought back a ton of motivation after watching the Gators. Motivation, however, is nothing new for Yankey, whom Haynes Bridge Middle coaches criticized for being a 220-pound 14-year-old when he first began in organized football there as a sixth grader.
“It gave me a challenge to go into that summer, trim down a little, and come back and be a better athlete,” Yankey said.
Yankey and Cummings were among players who met with Gators coach Urban Meyer after Saturday’s game. Though Florida made no formal scholarship offer, Gators coaches urged Yankey to take the SAT early as possible, and that an offer may await him in the spring.
Centennial coach Jeff Measor said Florida scouts told him Yankey’s circumstance warrants their highest possible ranking, but that they haven’t evaluated him yet. Measor said Duke and South Carolina already have offered scholarships.
After leading Centennial to a 3-7 season finish the previous week, Yankey said his first Florida experience convinced him he’s working on the right skills to be successful in college.
“I’ve gotten a lot better on pass blocking, which is my forte, and got better at run blocking too,” he said.
Yankey is planning a trip to watch Duke’s regular-season finale against North Carolina on Nov. 29.
