Tucker DB commits to Central Florida

Tucker defensive back A.J. Bouye didn’t waste any time thinking about his offer from Central Florida on Thursday.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Bouye quickly accepted and committed to the Knights. It was the first major-college offer for Bouye, who was also generating interest from South Carolina and Kentucky.

“He’s a big cornerback, and that seems to be what colleges are looking at more and more, kids with height at cornerback that are also very athletic,” Tucker coach Franklin Stephens said.

Bouye is projected to play cornerback for Central Florida, and could also get looks at safety, wide receiver, and return kicks and punts, according to Stephens. Bouye was familiar with CFU, making an unofficial visit to the Orlando school with his father recently.

Road Trip: Gainesville junior QB Sims to visit Florida

Several hours after he leads Gainesville against Oconee County in the first round of the Class AAA playoffs Friday evening, Red Elephants’ junior quarterback Blake Sims and a friend will hit the road and travel to Gainesville, Fla. to watch Florida host South Carolina.

It will be Sims’ second trip to Florida this season. He watched the Gators rout LSU last month at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

“I got to meet [Florida quarterback] Tim Tebow after that game,” said Sims, who has thrown for 1,651 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. “He told me how everything was going at Florida.”

Sims, who has a scholarship offer from Ole Miss, hopes to spend some time touring Florida’s campus this weekend. He’s also hoping the Gators will offer him during the visit.

“If they do offer, it won’t be a quick decision [to commit],” he said. “I still want to see what they can offer academically.”

Cartersville’s Donavan Tate leaning toward UGA visit

Note: Cartersville plays at St. Pius at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the first round of the Class AAA playoffs.

Cartersville’s Donavan Tate, son of former UGA tailback Lars Tate, said on Wednesday that he is leaning toward Georgia over LSU for his fifth and final official visit.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Tate postponed this weekend’s recruiting trip to Michigan for December. He already has been to Southern Cal, and will travel to North Carolina on Nov. 22 and Alabama on Nov. 29.

“My last visit is between Georgia and LSU,” Tate said. “Both of my parents went to Georgia, so there’s a tradition. I grew up as a Georgia fan and went to so many games there. I’m leaning towards visiting Georgia over LSU, we’ll see what happens.”

Tate is ranked as the No. 2 high school baseball prospect for the 2009 draft by Perfect Game. He plays quarterback and safety at Cartersville and is being recruited at both positions by all the schools.

UGA ends flirtation with Milton fullback Toney Williams

Georgia’s flirtation with Milton fullback Toney Williams has ended, at least for now.

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Williams is committed to Tennessee, but looking at other schools until the Volunteers select a new coach.

“I had a long conversation with [Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo],” Milton coach Scott Walker said.

“They looked at Toney on film, and said they loved everything about him. But [Bobo] said that they just didn’t have a scholarship available at running back right now.”

However, Georgia has not completely given up on the idea of eventually pursuing Williams, with Bobo mentioning several different scenarios: Knowshon Moreno could turn professional after this season, or UGA could miss on some of its final recruiting targets at other positions.

Meanwhile, other schools are not waiting to seize the opportunity: Williams has agreed to take official visits to Georgia Tech, Arkansas and Kentucky. He will also likely travel to Tennessee, while Notre Dame expressed interest on Wednesday. Walker talked with Notre Dame assistant Jon Tenuta, who coached at Tech last year.

“It has taken awhile, but Toney is warming up to the idea of looking at other colleges,” Walker said. “We’re just being patient, taking our time to see all what is out there. I just know somebody is going to get a great football player.”

Columbia DB Jarod Houston feels good about Georgia Southern offer

Jarod Houston is a busy guy. Playing three sports and maintaining a 3.0 grade point average will do that.

The Columbia senior just hopes his work and versatility will help get him a football scholarship. The 5-foot-9, 170 pounder is getting interest from East Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia Southern while projecting him as a cornerback or slotback.

“I get calls from all three but I would say by best chance (to get an offer) is from Georgia Southern. I sent all of my academic stuff to them and just waiting for a call back about that,” said Houston, who is a point guard for Columbia’s basketball team and a shortstop-second baseman for the Eagles’ baseball team.

Houston covers the 40-yard dash in better than 4.5 seconds and had six interceptions and returned two punts for touchdowns this season.
