UGA targeting Woodward Academy junior RB Thompson

Georgia has set its sights on Woodward Academy junior running back Juwan Thompson.

The 6-foot, 210-pound Thompson attended the Dogs’ game against Tennessee last month and had an opportunity to work out in front of Georgia coaches in Athens during the summer.

“When I went up there for a camp, I did very well,” said Thompson, whose fastest recorded time in the 40 yard dash is 4.4 seconds. “It would be very big to get an offer from Georgia.”

His combination of size and speed has captured the attention of Georgia recruiters.

“I’m not the biggest guy, but I’ve got more speed than the average fullback,” he said.

Thompson, a longtime Texas Longhorns fan, is also receiving interest from Auburn, LSU and Vanderbilt.

His first scholarship arrived recently from Duke.

“Duke has been one of my favorite schools since I started watching football,” Thompson said. “They’re getting better as the year progresses.”

Heritage TE Justin Jones ready to jump on Alabama offer

Vanderbilt offered Heritage tight end Justin Jones after his unofficial visit to Nashville last weekend, Heritage assistant coach Chris Pack said.

“They liked the way he got off the ball and the separation he creates with his arms,” Pack said. “He had a good time up there.”

Pack said the 6-foot-7, 230-pound member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150 did not commit but he hopes to schedule an official visit to Vanderbilt in the next few weeks.

Jones plays tight end and defensive end for the Patriots, but Pack said Vanderbilt is looking to put him at offensive tackle.

He recently backed away from his commitment to Kentucky and is currently entertaining offers from Akron, ECU, South Carolina and UAB. Jones is also talking with Alabama’s coaches, who have him on the Crimson Tide’s recruiting board.

“He really likes Carolina,” Pack said. “His dream would be to go to Alabama, but I’m not sure if they are going to offer. If they do, he would jump on it.”

Georgia Tech interested in Mt. Zion WR Copeland

Mt. Zion-Jonesboro wide receiver Drexel Copeland said he is on Georgia Tech’s recruiting board.

“They are going after a wide receiver from North Carolina, but if he doesn’t go then they are going to offer me,” the 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior said.

The wide receiver Copeland is referring to is Jheranie Boyd from Gastonia, N.C., the country’s No. 4 wide receiver, according to Rivals.com.. But Boyd commited to North Carolina last week.

“That means he should be getting an offer,” Mt. Zion head coach Jarrett Laws said.

Laws said he has been talking to Tech assistant coach Buzz Preston about Copeland.

“They see a lot of potential,” he said.

Copeland currently has offers from Alabama A&M and Tusculum College. Furman has been in contact with him.

Recruiting Q&A: Northview’s Brock Sanders commits to Tulane

Northview DE/TE Brock Sanders, the son of former NFL lineman Eric Sanders, committed to Stanford then opted out and chose Tulane. Sanders, a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150, talks about the recruiting process and life off the field.

— On why he backed out of his commitment to Stanford: “I got out there and visited and it just wasn’t a good fit. They wanted to keep me at defensive end and I’d like a chance to play tight end. Plus, if I went there, my parents would only get to go see me play maybe once a year because it’s so far away. Getting to New Orleans is no big deal.”

— On being a college fan … what school? “Nevada, actually. My dad went to school there, and I have a bunch of family there.”

— On what he’ll study in college: “Probably business. I want to start my own business eventually.”

— On what he does in his spare time: “I like to go hiking and camping. Hang out with friends.’

— On his most memorable backcountry adventure: “I went hiking in the North Georgia mountains with a friend of mine. I’ve got a machete and he was carrying a hatchet. The whole time he was worried about bears, and we come around a bend and there’s a bear about 30 yards away. I said, ‘Oh, my god, a bear,” and I kind of dropped down. I looked back and he was running down the trail. He just left me to fend for myself. Then the bear ran away.”

North Gwinnett QB Tamburo commits to Boise State

North Gwinnett quarterback Mike Tamburo visited Boise State for Saturday’s game against Utah State and came back to Georgia sold on the mountains and the blue turf, enough so that he committed Tuesday to the Broncos.

“I liked the system and the coaches are great, and he school itself,” said Tamburo, a member off the AJC’s The Georgia 150. “They’re a top football program. The team itself is real close, and they do a good job recruiting good kids.”

And, “Their coaches said they ski and snowboard a lot as a team.”

The clincher, though, was a personal touch.

“What really won me over was Saturday I was with the offensive coordinator,” Tamburo said, “and they had 10 plays off my highlight tape. He went over the plays and told me some things they wanted to try with me in their offense.”

The diversity of that offense, he said, was a big draw. “They had three different people that threw touchdown passes this week,” Tamburo said. “A lot of different people made plays.“

Tamburo, who led North Gwinnett to the Class AAAAA state finals in 2007, chose Boise State over Tulsa, Toledo, Bowling Green, Air Force and Ohio University.

Clemson vs. Georgia Tech for Flowery Branch DE Izaan Cross

Clemson and Georgia Tech remain the front-runners for Flowery Branch defensive end Izaan Cross. Each program will likely receive a visit from the AJC’s The Georgia 150 selection during the next 10 days.

“I’m going to try to go the Clemson game [on Nov. 15] when they play Duke,” Cross said. “And I’m looking to go to the Georgia Tech-Miami game on Thursday [Nov. 22].”

A commitment to either school could be on hold until the Tigers hire a coach to replace Tommy Bowden.

“When the new coach is hired at Clemson, I want to see if I’m on the same page with him or if he likes me,” Cross said.

But Flowery Branch’s strong connections with Tech, might push Cross to the Jackets.

A current Flowery Branch teammate, Jackets commit Daniel Drummond, is lobbying hard for Cross to join him and former teammate, Tech freshman quarterback Jaybo Shaw, at the ACC school based in Atlanta.

“I’ll tell you what, Drummond is doing a really good job of recruiting me,” Cross said, with a slight giggle. “He cracks me up sometimes.”

Cross is also being recruited by Arkansas, North Carolina and N.C. State.

Basketball: When will Derrick Favors announce college?

South Atlanta’s Derrick Favors, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 basketball by Scout, told the AJC’s Glenn LaFollette that he will wait until the spring to sign with a college.

Click here for the profile story on Favors.

The 6-foot-9 Favors has narrowed down to Georgia Tech, UGA, North Carolina State and Memphis. He has taken official visits to all four of the finalists, with the exception of Memphis. He is rumored to be deciding between Georgia Tech and UGA.

While Favors won’t sign in the early period, he could commit to a school at any moment. And who knows? Could Favors commit and sign later this week? South Atlanta coach Michael Reddick has said that Favors “always likes to surprise people.”

Mt. Zion-Jonesboro LB receives offer from Tennessee State

Mt. Zion-Jonesboro linebacker Diano Anderson received an offer from Tennessee State in Nashville, head coach Jarrett Laws said.

“Florida, Memphis, Middle Tennessee and Louisville have requested film on him, as well,” Laws said.

Laws said the 6-foot-2, 215-pound linebacker’s top choice is Memphis.

“Memphis has shown a general interest in him since his junior year,” he said. “If he had his way, that is where he would want to go.”

Laws said Anderson, who also has an offer from Savannah State, is going to weigh his options before committing.

“He will most likely make a decision in December,” he said.
