Tennessee commit Mitchell-Thornton to visit Stanford

Stephenson linebacker Nigel Mitchell-Thornton is scheduled to take an official visit to Stanford on Saturday when the Cardinal hosts Southern Cal.
Two weeks ago, Mitchell-Thornton appeared a lock to uphold his commitment to Tennessee. But following the announced departure of Volunteers coach Phillip Fulmer, the AJC’s The Georgia 150 choice began exploring his options.
“Stanford has been in the picture with me,” Mitchell-Thornton said. “They were in my top five before I committed to Tennessee.”
“They’re a great academic school and play in a pretty good conference.”
Mitchell-Thornton said he’s still committed to Tennessee, “but I’m looking at other options to have something to fall back on.”
He learned today that D.J. Swearinger, a safety from Greenwood, S.C., withdrew his commitment from Tennessee.
“He texted me and said he’s de-committed,” Mitchell-Thornton said. “I told him ‘I understand your decision, but keep Tennessee up there.’”
Mitchell-Thornton had Georgia Tech as one of his original finalists, but is not considering the Yellow Jackets this time around because he does not feel his style of play fits Tech’s defensive scheme.

Good for you keep your options open and remember that less than 1% of College football players go on to play in the NFL. Stanford is an excellent school and the alumni take care of their own.

I second Brian’s comments. A degree from Stanford will go a long way for you in the future. Also, the opportunity to begin building a football program will be special at a great institution like Stanford. Gook Luck!
