Basketball: Georgia Tech or UGA for Favors?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
National Signing Day is Wednesday, and all is quiet with South Atlanta’s Derrick Favors, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 basketball player by Scout.
The 6-foot-9 Favors is mulling over offers from Georgia Tech, Georgia, and North Carolina State. He made official visits to all three schools.
Will Favors sign on Wednesday? His coach has said it was unlikely, but also said Favors is known “for surprising.” Will Favors reveal which college he plans to attend anytime soon? His coach said there was a decent possibility of that happening, even in time for Favors to sign by the end of one-week early signing period (Nov. 19). Which school is Favors favoring? His coach said Favors has told him “some things in confidence” but that Favors would be the one making any announcements.
“This is Derrick’s show, from here out,” South Atlanta coach Michael Reddick said. “He is going to handle it how he wants to handle it.”

Dear Derrick,
Do Derrick a Favor and get a Georgia Tech education. And if not, then Paul Hewitt is known for putting players in the League. Georga Basketball sucks and always will suck. Plus their is nothing like playing in a Huge ACC game, SEC basketball for the most part is garbage. You’ll meet a great group of guys in your recruiting class and go down as one of the best in all time. Represent for your city and let a hometown Cat put Georgia Tech on the map. Plus, you’ll have a lock down defensive Guard/Forward D’Andre Bell coming back for your Freshman year. Don’t listen to the Georgia and NC State propaganda. I live in NC and Raleigh sucks….

To Mr. Favors:
Ra’Sean Dickey is no longer at GT. Look at what he made of himself as a 4-star prospect before his 4 years were up. Now, Mr. Favors, what do you really BELIEVE you can do with a better opportunity?

come to UGA and win conference championships, beat Tech every year, and play with Trey. Look at Hewitt’s record, one good run years ago, then horribly underachieving year after year. Plus, great looking women at UGA. Our facilities are better, and with asst. coach smith working with you personally, you development your freshman season will be tremendous.

DF does not know what he wants to do, today. He feels very comfortable in Athens, on the campus, the dorms, loves the ‘real life’ college atmosphere that is The Univ of Ga and which is not availabe at GT. He is considering Georgia as a Student and Basketball player, whereas GT is as a Basketball player. Yes, he is being nudged towards GT by the AAU folks and his HS coach. Everyone wants a piece of the action when he heads to the league.
I’ve said it before, will say it again, DF will choose UGA IF, if he is left alone to make the decision. He will choose the college experience available on the campus in Athens where he can live on campus, date, meet new friends, and enjoy being a college student over what will be a business decision if he signs with GT. There is no comparison between the two when it comes to college experince and college life. GT is the short cut to the NBA. If he signs with Georgia he may enjoy being a student and stay 2 yrs, which the nudgers cannot allow to happen.

**Tech is investing tons of cash in his recruitment. Tech is paying as much cash for Favors as they did to get Calvin Johnson. Hundreds of thousands of dollars will be tough for UGA to overcome since UGA pays zero to their recruits. But Favors does like UGA, Felton, the assistant coaches, the school, the facilities, and the UGA players the best. And his family like UGA the best too. But who can walk away from that much cash? Favors is in a tough decision making position. I would be shocked if he doesn’t sign with GA Tech.
Tech Lies and Cheats and unfortunately for us, cheating in this situation will probably take us out of the equation. I’m hoping Favors is a very rare athlete who will turn down the money and go with his heart.**

UGA has no basketball history and he’ll be stuck playing against Ole Miss and missishitti state.
If he goes to GA TECH, he’ll get to play the UNC’s, the Dukies, the Cavs, The Deacs, etc…. ya’ know…places where the true ball players end up.

Dawg44 and Captain crack me up. Somehow Captain thinks he’s an expert on college life at both uga and Tech as if he spent time getting a degree at each. He is full of it and knows nothing. Not only does Tech have a great college life, but it’s smack in the middle of one of the greatest cities which gives Tech students a great city life also! All I’m going to say regarding Dawg44, is ask which basketball team’s coach nearly got their school the death penalty through cheating and fraud? I’ll give you a hint - the coaches name started with Jim and ended in Harrick - oh, and he also coached at UGA. Can you figure it out now, or is it still too hard for you?

Georgia Tech is a much better program than Georgia and Georgia will not develop into anything anytime soon with all the thug athletes down there. Stay out of trouble, go to tech for a season, and hit the NBA lottery…
Look at Crittenton, Young, Bosh, Etc. Its easy to to and you will be remembered as a ACC Yellow Jacket and not a UGA bulldog, who wants to remembered as a Bulldog in the NBA!

Tech fans, remind me again of how dominent you have been on the national scene? You can’t beat UGA, even when you say UGA is down, you don’t play the big boys on national tv, that is the Duke-UNC games you keep getting yourself mixed up with.
With all that talent at Tech, why can’t you win big? When was the last time Tech won the ACC? You were 15-17 last year and his overal record is 58-70 in the ACC, with ALL THAT TALENT you keep talking about year in a year out.
Not only that, you can’t keep your players eligible at tech. Once again, you have a player ineligible, so what is exactly going on academically over there?
Then people bring up all the NBA talent coming out of Tech, well guess what, Bosh, Critt, Young, Marbury, Anderson and all the other 1 and done players were going to be NAB regardless of where they attended A SEMESTER of college, so it wasn’t like Tech really did anything to help that situation. They were good enough to begin with to get to that level, not because they used the Dorms and NOT THE LIBRARY for 1 semester at Tech.

I am a die-hard Dawg but for Favor’s professional sake he needs to go to Yech. Hewitt isn’t the best X’s and O’s coach in the world but he does have 7 players in the NBA now and he has had like 10 or 11 play in the NBA. That is pretty impressive. Felton has only had 1 player log minutes in the NBA and Damien Wilkins was a Harrick holdover.
Hewitt will prepare you for the league. Felton will make sure you know how to hustle but your NBA game will actually digress. Pick wisely.

Go to State Favors and get fed the ball by John Wall. Just imagine what Beasely and Rose could have accomplished had they played on the same team.
Hey AJC, why are you guys so blantantly pushing the man to stay in-state rather than just reporting which schools he’s going to choose? Every article is titled “GT or UGA for Favors?”, even though he’s considered other schools in the past, and while now his final 3 include UGA and GT, he’s also strongly considering NC State, yet you leave them out of the title. I’ve never seen a paper so blantantly try to push a kid to choose certain schools than you guys have. The fact that Sidney Lowe has had such success recruiting in the ATL area should show how serious a player NC State is in the recruitment of Favors. Will he choose State, probably not, but they are right there in the thick of things.

If Favors is smart, then he’ll go to Tech. He’s one and done wherever he goes. But with Tech, he can go deep into the NCAA Touney next year. He’ll play with Lawal, Shumpert, Mdofia, and Rice. Even Hewitt can’t f uck this up. If he can take Tech to Final Four or more his draft stock increases and he can be #1 pick.

Derrick, If you want to play in front of a national audience on ESPN, then this should not even be a debate. UGA is lucky if they get 2 games on Comcast. GA TECH plays North Carolina, Duke, Wake, and all the big boys. UGA has always been terrible and got lucky last year. Plus, no one comes to their games!! If you want to feel like you’re in the 13th grade, go to UGA to play. If you want to see yourself on Sportscenter, go to TECH.

Derrick, With your talent the pull to go pro will be persistent and a very tough decision. We would love to have you join the Wolfpack and the ACC, the premier basketball conference and the best conference to make the pro decision. We have a great tradition here in Raleigh & a great academic program.
If you don’t choose the Pack we will certainly understand, however, if you had to choose between Ga Tech & Ga the choice is really simple … ACC versus SEC. You belong in the ACC, preferrably with NCSU where you will receive the most adoration and the most opportunities to excel.

Captian: oyea because we ALL know everyone comes from Atlanta to Athens to have fun on a saturday night right?? All you ugA fans crack me up…im a dawg fan 2…but my team since i was a little kid has and will ALWAYS be GT…….. . uga had a nice run last year at the end, but look at all the starters you lost! UGA wouldnt of even made the NIT if they hadent won the sec tourney last year. Perhaps you UGA fans should stick to blogging about football…….because its clear from your posts that you know little about hoops. (you know… the REAL sport…that has a REAL champion at the end)
Comparing GT to UGA hoops is like comparing……Kansas to Kansas State, and UCLA to USC.
OJ Mayo and Beasley couldnt do it on their own, and such will be your luck if you go to UGA.
Come to GT where youll be surrounded with All American talent at almost every other starting spot!
GT FINAL 4 in 2010!!

Derrick, You clearly have the potential to play many years beyond college. Which degree would you rather have if this does not pan out for some reason? The answer is as simple as a three point shot being worth three points.

BTW how many times did UGA play on ESPN last year? O thats right 0 times and with the SEC deal they might get 2 games if that. GT had 10 games on ESPN last year and will get the same this year.
GT BBALL>>>>UGA BBALL this year and the future.

OK im a huge UGA fan and yes I hate Tech. But look kid, its your life, and you are the one who has to be happy. So listen to your heart, and follow it. Id love to see you go to UGA but take it from this 40 year old man, life is to short to be unhappy even if it is for a year or two. Anyway good luck in the future.

If you want to play in the ACC and have a chance at winning a title, then to go to the class of the ACC-UNC or Duke. You can choose UGA but the program is still growing and has a lot of young players.

Derrick-Derrick-Derrick! WTF? As tall as you are you could put on about 50lbs. and be a great tight end for the UGA Dawgs. Other than that, who cares where you go. Basketball in the SEC SKS. Basketball anywhere SKS. Everybody in the country knows that B’Ball is just a filler until football starts back.
What I want to know is why don’t you go ahead and go on into the NBA right out of highschool? Are you not as good as LeRoy James? If you want people to SEE you on TV, the NBA is the best place for you. If you want to graduate from college then UGA will be your best bet. I think Ga. Tech will be a bit tough for someone with your limited academic background. Besides, Tech just wants you for their B’Ball mill.
Why don’t you go to North Carolina, or didn’t they OFFER? If you’re bound and determined to go to college and take a scholarship from a DESERVING student who would graduate, go to NC State. At least it’s a lot closer to Chapel Hill than Athens or the A T L.
In the final analysis, my vote is for you to SKIP college and go straight into the NBA. If you go to college you’ll just end up flunking the average classes and having the Tutors “carry” you through your couple of years until you go pro…Just Do It….Go Pro Now!
PS, I’m a frog lover, lets see you jump!

Hey there dawgballs and technuts, both of your schools otherwise known as the Georgia Numnuts society. I guess the football season for the both of you is such a disaster that you’re trying to put it out of your heads by thinking about basketball. Tech got your teeth kicked in by North Carolina, and Georgia….well georgia, remember Alabama? They were the lawn mower and you were the grass! And the gators?? I don’t think your team will be dancing in the endzone in the future….near, distant or otherwise.
Why are y’all worrying about where this idiot goes to college? If he is from the ATL, as so many of you like to say, then I’m sure he is already a tatoo billboard with “bling” on his teeth and jeans down past the crack of his A$$.
My suggestion is to get yourself an agent and go ahead and go PRO. Give Stephon Marbury a call. He was in breach of contract, duh, and went pro. What a move! a millionaire with only 20 hours of college credit. Go Pro, thats where you want to be anyway.

*=Why don’t y’all leave this kid alone and let him do what he wants to do without so much undue outside influence? At 6’9” Delroy could put on about 100lbs. and have a great career in wrestling entertainment. He could be the next ROCK, or at least the next BOOKER T.
What a role model he would be for all the inner city youts! Somebody like him coming out of highschool could get coaching directly from the “HULKSTER” and probably Mr. Vince McMahon himself.
I sometimes wonder why Georgia and Tech have such a hate for each other? I also wonder how a young, impressionable boy like Delroy looks at your bantering back and forth?
If I were him I wouldn’t give either of you LILLY WHITE schools and FANS the excitement of my presence.
Delroy, why don’t you give someone from the WWE a call and ask for a tryout? We would love to have a talent like you. We could call you the “DUNKER”. You could roll your opponent up on the mat then throw him into the turnbuckle. That could be your finishing move.
In closing, If I read another post by a Georgia fan saying your b’ball program is on the rise, I’ll be glad to show you something REAL on the rise. Bring me your mama, wife, sister, aunt, granny, whoever and I’ll give them something that rises…and it won’t be a b’ball program.
Louis Farrakhan is great.

I hope he goes to Tech. He is overrated just like Tech’s team, coach, student body, campus, and education.
We will beat Tech again this year, just like last year, just like in football. Tech used to be competitive, but now all they do is talk, talk, talk.
Nothing will be greater than swatting the Yellow Jackets again with their big name recruits.
Face it, Techies: We OWN YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

Almost everyone on these blogs needs to take a breath and grow up.
Derrick and his family are going to make a decision that is in their best interest, not any of yours. He has had good counsel from them and his coach and I am sure they are all amused by all of the speculations.
When Derrick is ready to make his decision public, you’ll all know about it in good order. In the meantime, if you want to go around sniping at each other, take it off line. If you want to congratulate Derrick on his wonderful opportunity, this is the proper forum.
Best of luck, Derrick. I am sure your family is very proud of you and all what you have accomplished. Follow your heart and remember, even when you decide to go pro, a quality education will be with you a lifetime.

Barry/YELLOWJACKETS:
I guess you really know nothing about the NBA - you can’t jump from HS directly to the NBA anymore. You have to spend at least one year in college before you go pro.
dawgfan4 - AMC holds over 9,000, not 2,000 and is sold out for every game. How many does Stegman hold, and how often is THAT place sold out (note: Women’s games DON’T count)??

The question is not whether or not D Favors will choose between UGA and Tech. The question should be whether or not Favors chooses between State and Tech. There is no question that Favors wants to play in the ACC against the best competition in the country. And why would Favors choose among schools with no tradition? That’s why I believe Favors picks NC State. He even made a comment that “this feels like home” when he visited the RBC Center in Raleigh, arguably the best arena in the country…

Go Jackets, one question….how many national championships do you have and how many ACC championships do you have?? Your history of putting players in NBA consistently ended with the Bobby Cremins era..We’ve had 3 players drafted in the first round the last 4 years. End of discussion…

Why the hell would he want to go to NC State? You guys haven’t done anything recently. If you think that he goes to NC State because of tradition you are wrong. If he did he would have gone to Duke. And Mike H we’ve had 3 players drafted in the first round in the last 4 years too dummy. Jack, Crittenton, and Young. GT will have a lot more talent the NC State will next year. Favors should come to GT. End of discussion…

Mike H: “Your history of putting players in NBA consistently ended with the Bobby Cremins era”
Wow…. its clear the NC state fans are just as clueless about Hoops as Uga fans!
How many US dream team members have come from NC State?
Gt has had Price, Bosh, and Marbury.
And yes Cremins was a beloved coach…. but Hewitt has put at least twice as many members in the NBA as NC state has. Chris Bosh, Jarrett Jack, Luke Schindser, Young, Crittention, Mario West, Anthony Morrow.
Do yourself a favor Mike, stick to football like the clueless uga fans….. Go GT, Hawks, Falcons and Jets!!

Ok guys and gals….you are right, you guys have more tradition than any school in the ACC, with your zero national championships and terrible attendance at bball games, why wouldn’t Favors pick Ga Tech…Atlanta is regarded as the Arm Pit of the South. Come on Derrick and play in the triangle where we eat, breathe and live basketball…10 national championships on Tobacco Road guys, end of discussion!!

What a bunch of losers on this blog. It would be great if he went to Tech but their ‘09 recuits are pretty solid. They got Shumpert coming in this year and a decent sophmore class this year. Come ‘09 Tech is going to be a front runner in the ACC with or without Favors. losers= grown men begging a 17 year old dude to come to their school on a blog.

1 Georgia Tech….You are plain better at sports? Are you really that sheltered? Get out of the lab once in a while and join realty. And as far as being jealous, look at Go Jackets and GT’s posts. You guys seem to have the inferiority complex and appear to be more delusional. And for GT and Go jackets, your posts show true ignortance and lack of knowledge on anything factual.By Jerry Dawg

GT……..You say we should kill you guys in football every year but don’t? We have beaten you guys seven straight, I would say that’s pretty dominant. The only years that were close was when Calvin was there and two of those years were supposedly “up” years for Tech and “down” years for us with one of the years being very extreme in that case, yet we STILL beat you.

GT really cares about basketball. They care so much that they only had 6 students in their student section for their ACC home opener against UVA, a game in which they could have really used some students going nuts and making Alexander Memorial Coliseum a tough environment to play in.
