Westlake’s Nolans turns attention to college
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Westlake defensive end/linebacker Dearco Nolan can put more focus on where he’s headed to play football in college now that his high school career is over. But he’s still hurting.
The Lions finished the season with a 6-4 record and fell short of reaching the state playoffs, and he admits the weekend that included turning in his gear was difficult.
“I was one of the leaders of the team, so I have to take some of the blame,” he said Sunday. “I dealt with that all weekend. It’s all over for me.
“I gave away a lot of my football accessories. A lot of it I passed down to younger players. It’s sort of a tradition here to do that. That was pretty cool, but I wasn’t planning to give it up until later.”
Nolan, a 6-foot-3, 235-pounder, finished with 11 sacks and six forced fumbles.
“I look at it all as you’ve got to keep going forward. I’ve got to stay hungry and look toward college,” he said. “That’s where all of my focus is going to turn now.”
Nolan has been offered by North Carolina State, Mississippi, North Carolina, Iowa State, West Virginia, Miami-Ohio and Middle Tennessee.
He has not planned official visits.

SWD’s Johnson has warm feeling despite Eastern Michigan cold
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
The family atmosphere on his official visit to Eastern Michigan last weekend had Southwest DeKalb running back Michael Johnson feeling kind of warm inside.
Johnson found snow and temperatures in the 30s during his visit to the Ypsilanti, Mich., university, and while it was “a whole new kind of cold,” than what he’s used to in Georgia, he liked what he saw — and felt.
“I toured the campus, talked about classes. I liked the facilities. I really like it here,” Johnson said Sunday afternoon while attending a Eastern Michigan women’s basketball game as part of his two-day visit. “It really seems like a family here, so that’s real important to me.”
Johnson said he’s not ready to make a commitment, but that Eastern Michigan is solidly on his list of possible college homes. His other offers include Western Carolina, Akron, Eastern Kentucky and South Carolina State. He visited South Carolina State two weeks ago, and still plans a visit to Western Carolina, which also offered three other Southwest DeKalb players last month.
The comfort he felt from players, coaches and other students has him thinking he can put up with the cold of Ypsilanti, located just east of metropolitan Detroit.
“I can just put on a couple more shirts to be able to go out there and play,” he said.

How It Went: Perry’s Farms visits South Carolina
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Perry guard Johnnie Farms watched South Carolina defeat Arkansas at Williams Brice Stadium on Saturday. It was the 6-foot-3, 290-pound Farms’ first visit to Columbia since committing to the Gamecocks earlier this fall.
“Everything felt good. It was a nice visit,” said Farms, who also attended the Georgia-South Carolina game in September. “There wasn’t really anything different [on Saturday] compared to my last visit there. The fans and everyone treated me good, as always.”
On the campus, which is located just south of downtown: “The best thing about the campus is the frat houses,” Farms said.
Farms, a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150, is eager for his freshman season at South Carolina to arrive.
“I’m ready to go over there and play now,” he said.

How It Went: North Springs DL Lang hopes Ga. Southern visit results in offer
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
North Springs defensive end Richard Lang hand delivered his highlights tapes to Georgia Southern coaches on Saturday. He hopes the film footage will convince the Eagles’ coaching staff to offer him a scholarship.
“Yeah, they’re definitely looking at me,” the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Lang said. “I’m on their recruiting board. They want to see more film and they’ll get back to me.”
Lang and teammate Robert Starks spent Saturday in Statesboro and saw Georgia Southern drop a 27-17 decision to Samford. Lang said the highlight of his visit was the festive atmosphere during the game.
“I like the stadium a lot,” said Lang, who has an offer from Army. “It has a hill and you can watch the kids playing football there during the game. And there were just a bunch of students and fans who were really into the game.
“If they do offer me, they’d probably go to the top of my list and be number one. I liked everything about the school during my visit.”

How It Went: Blessed Trinity’s Crisafi impressed with Middle Tennessee State University
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Blessed Trinity guard Matt Crisafi and his father spent Saturday at Middle Tennessee State University and watched as the Blue Raiders hosted homecoming opponent Louisiana-Monroe.
“It was a lot of fun,” said Crisafi, an AJC’s The Georgia 150 choice. “We drove up [Saturday] morning, took a walk around campus, ate lunch, watched highlight film of the Maryland game and talked to all of the coaches.”
Crisafi has scholarship offers from Delaware, MTSU, Samford and Tulane.
“The visit to Middle Tennessee State kind of exceeded my expectations,” Crisafi said. “I didn’t realize football was that big there. I got to the game and realized how many people are crazy about MTSU football. It impressed me a lot.
“I’m pretty interested in that program. I’ll probably take an official visit there in December.”

Clemson, Tennessee studying Henry County QB Drew Little
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Henry County quarterback Drew Little pulled a surprise when he didn’t commit to Boston College after his official visit to the ACC school recently. His only other offer is Georgia State.
What’s the holdup? Little has been approached by Tennessee, which lost one of its two quarterback commitments to Stanford last month. This happened even before coach Phil Fulmer announced his resignation.
“Tennessee said they were definitely signing two QBs, and they were watching me hard,” Little said. “They said once they get finished evaluating all the quarterbacks they are looking at, they will let me know something.”
The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Little also talked to Clemson assistant Ron West.
“[West] said Clemson was going through rough times, and they should know who is the head coach is within three or four weeks. Then they would let me know more. The interim coach [Dabo Swinney] likes me a lot if he gets the job.”
