Perry’s WR Trey Smith considering others than East Carolina

Perry’s Trey Smith, an AJC The Georgia 150 wide receiver, has set up two official visits in December. Smith will visit Western Michigan the weekend of December 5, and Ball State the weekend of December 12.

“I set up two official visits (but) I’m not leaning anywhere yet,” he said.

Along with Western Michigan and Ball State, the 6-5, 205-pound Smith also has offers from East Carolina, Marshall, Akron and Kent State. Smith tried to commit to East Carolina earlier this year, but was told to wait because so many prospects were trying to pick the Pirates after wins over West Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Cedar Grove’s Stanley McBride attracts colleges with 4.43 speed

Cedar Grove’s Stanley McBride certainly has found that running the 40-yard dash in 4.43 seconds will attract attention from colleges.

The 6-foot-3, 180 pound senior entered this season as a virtual unknown. But his first full season as a quarterback changed all. McBride is entering the Saints’ last regular-season game next Friday with a combined passing and rushing yardage total of 1,766.

But it is his 800 rushing yards with 11 touchdowns on just 78 carries (entering Friday’s game) that has drawn the most attention. Middle Tennessee State, Marshall, Troy, Central Florida, South Florida, North Carolina, Mississippi State and Appalachian State have recently expressed plenty of that.

“I thought I might have a chance to play in college when I was a junior, but I am a little bit surprised what has happened [recently],” said McBride, who runs the 400 meters in 47 seconds and will be a state championship contender in that event this spring. “Everybody except Appalachian State is talking to me about playing wide receiver. They are talking to me about being a quarterback.”

Alpharetta DB Vince Williams plans to college decision before Christmas

Alpharetta cornerback Vince Williams, who has 40 tackles this season, has received a scholarship offer from Western Kentucky.

Williams said he’ll commit only to a school he has visited. He’s scheduled to make official visits to Western Kentucky on Nov. 15, Ball State on Dec. 13, then Akron. He said he might decide on a school before Christmas.

“I want to get up to each [school] and see which one I like,” Williams said. “I want to see which is the best fit. They’ve kept me posted on who’s making commitments at my position so I know how much time I have.”

McIntosh County Academy OL Thorpe gets first big offer

From a college football fan perspective, McIntosh County Academy is known as the school that produced Allen Bailey two years ago. Bailey now plays at the University of Miami but recruiters have returned this season taking a look at two Buccaneers.

Leading the way is offensive tackle Genard Thorpe. The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Thorpe has been offered a scholarship by Arkansas State, while Troy and Middle Tennessee State are heavily interested.

Meanwhile, linebacker Sequan Stanley (5-9, 195) is hearing fromm Furman and Wofford.

“Both of them are good students,” said MCA coach Robby Robinson. “[Thorpe] is a young man with a lot of potential. [Stanley] is just a tremendous football player. He is a sideline-to-sideline guy who never quits.”

Perry OL taking family with him to South Carolina game

Perry lineman and South Carolina commitment Johnnie Farms is going to take his family to the Gamecocks game against Arkansas this weekend.

“I want them to get a feel for the Gamecocks,” said the 6-foot-3, 310-pound Farms, a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150.

This will be the second South Carolina game Farms has attended. He went to the Georgia-South Carolina game Sept. 13 before committing to the Gamecocks on Sept. 29.

Rivals.com ranks Farms as the eighth best offensive guard in the nation. He had nearly 20 scholarship offers, including Auburn, Florida and Georgia.

Dutchtown WR Joe Stewart hearing from Hawaii

Dutchtown’s Joe Stewart’s distracting ways have helped the Bulldogs to a breakout season.

In its fifth varsity season, the Henry County school has assured itself of its first non-losing season. The Bulldogs are 5-4 heading into this weekend’s game against Region 4-AAAA leader North Clayton. They had not won more than two games in any of the previous four seasons.

A big reason is the 6-foot, 165-pound Stewart, who has played quarterback, wide receiver, running back and kick returner. He specializes in returning kicks and playing receiver.

His 4.4 speed in the 40 has drawn attention of more than recruiters.

“When I’m on the field, people are looking to see where I am,” said Stewart, who was averaging three catches and 40 receiving yards per game entering last week’s 27-22 loss to Griffin. “People won’t even kick off to me. If they kick it, they kick it away from me. I’m double-teamed all the time [at receiver]. …

“I don’t like it, but if that helps my team win, it’s OK being a distraction.”

Stewart has offers from Missouri, where his father Joe Sr. played, as well as Stanford, Ole Miss, North Carolina State, Central Florida, Hawaii and several smaller programs.

Westlake QB Lewis Kindle hopes numbers bring offers

As a young quarterback in the Redan Youth Organization, Lewis Kindle, now the quarterback at Westlake, used to hand, pitch and throw the ball to running back Stephen Hill, now a receiver/kick returner at Miller Grove.

But while Hill has committed to Georgia Tech, Kindle is still waiting for an offer. In fact, in spite of the big-time numbers he has put up this season, he’s still waiting for the recruiting rush to begin.

Kindle has thrown for 1,230 yards, 13 touchdowns (with five interceptions), and run for 460 yards and two touchdowns. His main pursuers are Eastern Kentucky, Jackson State, and UT-Martin. But still, no offers.

“It’s a little frustrating. I think my statistics are as good as a lot of quarterbacks out there,” Kindle said. “But I’m not worrying about that. My main goal is to just keep playing and keep trying to help my team win games and make it into the playoffs.”

Westlake LB Dearco Nolan gets N.C. State offer

Westlake linebacker/defensive end Dearco Nolan saw his major-college offer list increase and is hopeful that another offer is just around the corner.

Nolan was offered by North Carolina State, adding to a list of offers that includes Mississippi, North Carolina, Iowa State, West Virginia, Miami-Ohio and Middle Tennessee.

Like many recruiters tell prospects, N.C. State told Nolan he could play right away next year.

“They said they really needed players,” said Nolan, who said Sunday that he was told that a walk-on is in the Wolfpack’s current starting lineup. “They need speed. They need strength. … They need real good athletes who get after it.”

Mississippi State says it’s extremely interested, too. “It looks like they’re going to offer because Ole Miss offered.”

Nolan, a 6-foot-3, 235-pounder, has 13 sacks in nine games for Westlake.

Griffin RB Sheldon Hancock plays in same offense as Georgia Tech

After dislocating his left elbow in a pre-season scrimmage against Marist and missing the first six weeks of the season, Griffin running back Sheldon Hancock wasn’t on the radar of too many colleges.

That has all changed as Hancock, fresh off a 195-yard, three-touchdown effort against Alcovy that helped the Bears reach the state playoffs, is starting to get interest from North Carolina State, South Carolina State and Georgia Tech. Hancock said he’d love to sign with the Yellow Jackets.

“I’d like to go to Tech because they run the same offense as we do,” Hancock said. “(Right now) it’s just small talk; nothing big.”

Also on Hancock’s wish list: South Florida, Central Florida and Ball State.

Clemson recruit J.K. Jay schedules official visit with UGA

Georgia is working fast and furiously to lure away one of South Carolina’s top prospects.

The Bulldogs have offered a scholarship to offensive lineman J.K. Jay of Greenville, S.C., who will take an official visit to Georgia on Nov. 22, according to CUTigers.

The 6-foot-7, 290-pound Jay committed to Clemson, but opened back his recruiting after coach Tommy Bowden resigned. He visited North Carolina last weekend and plans a recruiting trip to Clemson, but has yet to set a date.
