Michigan making late push for Henry County WR Patterson
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Following recent trips to watch games at Georgia, Florida, Clemson and Georgia Tech, Stanford commit Jamal Patterson of Henry County said one of the nation’s most storied football programs has turned up the recruiting heat during the past week.
“Michigan has been recruiting me extremely hard lately,” Patterson said this evening. “But Stanford is still number one.”
Patterson, a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150, has offers from nearly every major college football program in the nation, with the exception of Georgia.
He plans to take his official visit to Stanford in January.

Carver RB Demond Dennis commits to Georgia Tech
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Carver-Atlanta tailback Demond Dennis committed to Georgia Tech on Wednesday, less than four days after he was offered by the Yellow Jackets.
“I thought about waiting, but [Tech] told me that there was only one [A-back] scholarship left, and I didn’t want to miss out on a school like Georgia Tech,” Dennis said.
It was the fourth commitment for the Jackets in two days, with Dennis picking Tech over Louisville and Illinois. But it took an unusual turn of events for Dennis to end up at Tech this soon.
The 5-foot-9, 193-pound Dennis almost didn’t attend last Saturday’s game against Florida State, but decided to go at the last minute. He didn’t arrive to the game until the second quarter. He bumped into Tech assistant Buzz Preston after the game, and Preston handed him scholarship papers. Dennis eventually would have gotten the offer, but it might have taken a few days, which could have put his offer in jeopardy with so many players committing to Tech in recent days.
Dennis said he nearly committed to Tech on the spot, but said his father advised him to think it over. Dennis had his mind made up on Wednesday.
“I like how it’s close to home, and my friends and family can come see me play,” Dennis said.

Another SEC offer for Gainesville junior receiver Jones
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
The outstanding play of Gainesville junior receiver Tailer Jones continues to capture the attention of college recruiters.
Two days after receiving a scholarship offer from Ole Miss, Jones received a call from South Carolina Wednesday evening.
“I just got an offer from South Carolina,” said Jones, who also has offers from Arkansas, N.C. State and West Virginia.
“Coach [Steve] Spurrer is a great coach who helped to perfect the spread offense. He, along with his son [Steve Spurrier Jr.], is one of the best coaching combinations you can get.
“They are building a great program there, and it’s one of the best schools in the SEC.”
Georgia Tech is also showing interest in Jones, who attended the Jackets’ victory over Florida State on Saturday.

Lassiter’s Lutzenkirchen traveling to FSU for official visit
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
When Lassiter tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen isn’t dominating YouTube videos, he’s still one of the most sought-after recruits in the state. He continues his world tour this weekend in Tallahassee, Fla., for an official visit to Florida State.
“They offered me a while back,” Lutzenkirchen said. “I’m heard a lot of good things about the school. I just want to see what it’s like.”
Lutzenkirchen remains an Auburn commitment but is exploring his options until the Tigers hire a new offensive coordinator. He is a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150.
The Trojans senior recently took an unofficial visit to Florida and has received new offers from the Gators, South Carolina and Georgia Tech. Several other Big 12 schools have started sending mail, including Kansas and Texas A&M.

Brookwood’s Williams hopes Alabama avoids No. 1 curse
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Brookwood’s Kellen Williams is hoping that Alabama can avoid “the curse.” The Crimson Tide climbed into the No. 1 spot in the BCS rankings this week.
“Obviously I’m honored to be associated with the University of Alabama and I always have been,” Williams said. “But it’s a little bit of an ego boost when you know you’re being recruited by the No. 1 school in the country. The ranking comes with a lot of responsibility and hopefully they don’t get the curse. I don’t think they will. Hopefully they can hang on, win out and make a run for the national championship.”
Williams, who went to Alabama’s game against Arkansas State on Saturday, also plans to go to games later this month against Auburn and Mississippi State. He’d like to see his future school play at least one other time, this one with a shorter ride - the SEC Championship in the Georgia Dome.
“We’re waiting to see,” Williams said. “If they win this week [vs. LSU], it’s sure they’ll be playing. My mom will be waiting on e-Bay to get some tickets. I’ll definitely be down there if they’re in it.”
A 6-4, 300-pound tackle, Williams won’t make his official visit to Tuscaloosa until January.

Dunwoody DE Malcolm Mitchell focusing on season over recruiting
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
The biggest moment of Dunwoody defensive end Malcolm Mitchell’s young football career will come on national signing day in February when he is likely to sign with a major college program.
But the biggest moment of the 2008 season comes Friday when his Wildcats take on St. Pius in a battle of unbeatens for the Region 5-AAA championship. Both teams are state-ranked - Dunwoody is No. 4, Pius is No. 3 — and both are 9-0.
“It should be a great game,” said the 6-foot-2, 220-pound senior, who is the leading sacker among DeKalb County schools with a sack and a half per game. “It’s the biggest game of the season, biggest ever for me.”
Dunwoody’s standout play is the main reason Mitchell wasn’t able to watch South Carolina beat Tennessee in person last Saturday. He was invited to the game, but couldn’t attend. He says he’ll schedule a visit to Columbia as soon as he can.
South Carolina is one of three programs he considers in the lead. West Virginia and Louisville also have offered scholarships, along with Tulane, Central Florida, Marshall, Indiana and Alabama-Birmingham.

Banneker LB “crushed” after Mississippi State withdraws offer
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Banneker linebacker Milton Patterson said he was “crushed” when he got news that Mississippi State had rescinded its scholarship offer.
“I couldn’t believe it,” said the 5-foot-11, 230-pound member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150. “I thought it was the end.”
Patterson said several people have suggested he should have committed sooner.
“They say I should have made a wiser decision,” he said. “Life is full of choices and you don’t always make the right one, but no regrets and no love lost towards Mississippi State.”
Patterson said Mississippi State assistant coach David Turner contacted him saying they were full at the linebacker position.
“I hadn’t had too many conversations with them, so there may have been some bad communication,” he said. “I understand it’s a business and they have to move on. There are other players who want that spot.”
Patterson said he has moved on as well, and he is hopeful more offers will come.
“If I keep working like I know I can and if the right people come to see me then something will happen,” he said.
Patterson has already scheduled an official visit to Akron on Dec. 6. He currently has offers Savannah State and South Carolina State but said Akron is now his top choice.

Tennessee AD calls Milton FB Toney Williams
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Tennessee athletics director Mike Hamilton called to check on Milton fullback Toney Williams on Tuesday.
Williams has committed to Tennessee, which had coach Phil Fulmer announce his resignation on Monday.
“[Hamilton] wanted Toney to know that he still has his football scholarship at Tennessee, if he still wants it,” Milton coach Scott Walker said.
“He said that he hoped Toney would stay committed to Tennessee and still enroll in January.”
What has Williams decided? Nothing yet, according to Walker. “Nothing has changed right now, Toney is still committed to Tennessee. We’re waiting to hear back from a couple of colleges that called, see who is interested in Toney, and see how things settle at Tennessee.”
Walker said he’d either called or heard over the last two days from Georgia, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky and North Carolina State, regarding Williams.
He has rushed for 1,875 yards and 23 touchdowns for Milton (7-2, 6-2), which is in the playoffs for the first time since 1999.
