Carver RB Demond Dennis commits to Georgia Tech
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Carver-Atlanta tailback Demond Dennis committed to Georgia Tech on Wednesday, less than four days after he was offered by the Yellow Jackets.
“I thought about waiting, but [Tech] told me that there was only one [A-back] scholarship left, and I didn’t want to miss out on a school like Georgia Tech,” Dennis said.
It was the fourth commitment for the Jackets in two days, with Dennis picking Tech over Louisville and Illinois. But it took an unusual turn of events for Dennis to end up at Tech this soon.
The 5-foot-9, 193-pound Dennis almost didn’t attend last Saturday’s game against Florida State, but decided to go at the last minute. He didn’t arrive to the game until the second quarter. He bumped into Tech assistant Buzz Preston after the game, and Preston handed him scholarship papers. Dennis eventually would have gotten the offer, but it might have taken a few days, which could have put his offer in jeopardy with so many players committing to Tech in recent days.
Dennis said he nearly committed to Tech on the spot, but said his father advised him to think it over. Dennis had his mind made up on Wednesday.
“I like how it’s close to home, and my friends and family can come see me play,” Dennis said.

Demond picked GT over offers from Illinois, Louisville, Alabama, Auburn, and about five others.
Second AB to commit within 24 hours that had offers from Alabama and Auburn. Interesting.

Smart move young man. Georgia Tech puts more emphasis for the most part on academics, unlike some of these other schools out there. Make sure you work hard, get your knowledge and graduate!

I covered this kid last year during their 1st-round playoff game. He let a 4-seed from the mountains shut him down.

Might have been a bad game. Obviously these schools saw something that they liked and feels he can contribute in someway to their program.

I like Tech, but let’s stop fooling ourselves with this Tech places the focus on academics stuff. I don’t think Tech’s graduation rate is too hot, not to mention the academic scandal they have been involved in. Let’s be real with ourselves. And UGA(another team that I like) fans don’t need to say anything either considering their low graduation rates. As a matter of fact my alma mater Georgia Southern performed poorly too. Point is Tech is no more academically focused than UGA or any other big time sports program. It is a fallacy to believe otherwise.

Interesting trend…….The AJC “journalists” fail to list the SEC schools whenever a player which has several offers from SEC schools and other schools ends up committing to GT. Why not just report the news and stop trying to “protect” the over-hyped image of the SEC? If would be funny if it had no impact, but this sort of news coverage hurts the ACC image and continues to protect the over-rated image of the SEC teams. The SEC has 3-4 solid teams this year; however, the SEC is simply not as dominant as most fans and media suck-ups would like to think. Head to head, the ACC vs. SEC in 2008 is 3-3. The ACC does not have any highly rated, dominant teams; but the entire conference is respectable-to-good. The bottom 7 SEC teams are very weak; if they had played the same out of conference competition as the ACC, the entire country would know just how weak the bottom 7 teams in the SEC really are this year.
Good luck at GT Mr. Dennis………I look forward to following your college career! The future for GT football is very bright!!

Big Man, graduation rates are a notoriously poor indicator of academic rigor or focus. As with the rising GPA’s across the nation, the graduation rates are increasing not because of a greater “academic focus,” but rather inflationary forces that are indicative of anything but rigor. Georgia Tech is known for the rigor of its curriculum and the quality of its graduates. If you ask any engineering employer about Georgia Tech graduates, you will quickly learn of the difference between Tech and other schools with Division 1 sports programs.
Oh, and Demond Dennis, you’ve made a great choice that will inevitably lead to a bright future :)

Congrats to G-Tech on the commit.
Not sure about the Bama offer, but Saban does prefer bigger backs. Then again, the offer could have been as a slot receiver or DB.
Regardless, before we hired Saban, my first choice for the job was Paul Johnson. And boy was I roasted on the Bama boards.
Tech needs to pony up the $$$ and new contract now because he’s the real deal. I see him beating UGA on a regular basis in 2 years. That’s right. 2 years. He could win this year but it’s still only his first year. Just think what he’ll have in place in 2010 and beyond. Great hire Tech!

Big man, think about it….GT does have a focus on athletics AND academics. We created a management program for our athletes from which to matriculate so they didn’t have to face the rigor of a top-5 engineering school. Where is that school now? #33 is the last ranking I saw from US News. The tops include the likes of Harvard, Yale, Berkley, etc.
Now some people might say, oh that doesn’t include football players. But, they go to the same classes and have to pass the same tests. Yes, they get extra help and often pass with a 2.5 GPA. But, so did I as a traditional student and so did most of my friends. I could not have completed a degree at GT with 25 hours a week of football, probably not even management.
If you figure that the GT M-train has about 1500 passengers and almost 200 athletes of different sorts in the program, it means that the management program is top 30 with almost 15% athletes. To me, it’s staggering that our STUDENT-athletes are that competitive.

Nice to see some classy comments from UGA and Bama fans. Also nice to see the surge in recruiting this week. Things continue to look promising for the future on the Flats.
To pony up for an extention or something similar, we need to get our arses in the seats for the Thursday night game, and buy more season tickets next year. And I really think a huge surge in season tickets will come next year for sure, looking at this years results so far and the awesome home schedule next year. The available space bandwagon has to be looking more and more appealing to those folks that like to jump on when things look good.

He is a great player and will be good for GT…that being said, don’t say the stuff about offers from places like AU and Bama and stuff. They wanted him only as a DB, not a RB and his offers were conditional, so they really weren’t complete offers. He said he didn’t want to play DB in college so he decided among the schools that would allow him to play RB
