Georgia, Georgia Tech call about Tennessee recruit Toney Williams

Milton coach Scott Walker told the AJC on Monday night that his phone has not stopped ringing since Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer said he would resign at season’s end.

Milton fullback Toney Williams is committed to Tennessee.

“My phone hasn’t stopped ringing today,” Walker said. “It’s been a lot of reporters and several schools to see what [Williams’] plans are, whether he’s interested in coming for visits, etc.”

Walker said he’d either called or heard Monday from Georgia, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky and North Carolina State regarding Williams. The coach said he sent film Monday to Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi.

Williams recruiting life had been comparatively tranquil since committing to Tennessee before spring practice, but it all ended with Fulmer’s announcement. His 1,875 yards and 23 touchdowns rushing, which have Milton (7-2, 6-2) in the playoffs for the first time since 1999, have schools relishing a second chance at him.

“It’s been kind of hectic,” Walker said. “[Fulmer’s announcement] happened so fast. We haven’t worked on Toney’s recruiting for some time.”

The 6-foot-1, 227-pound Williams has said all season he’d honor his commitment to play at Tennessee despite the Vols’ 3-6 record. And though The Georgia 150 selection reiterated that again Monday, Fulmer’s pending departure has him entertaining offers from other schools.

“Coach Fulmer is a big reason why I picked Tennessee, but not the only reason,” Williams said. “I still love the school, and maybe they will pick someone from the current staff, or get a big-name coach from somewhere else. There’s just so much unknown right now.”

If we had to pick the AJC Super 11 again, Toney would be “automatic.” He has had a monster senior season, far beyond anyone’s expectations. In my humble opinion, no player in the state has come further from last year to this year than Toney. He is absolutely amazing.

You would think UGA and Tech would be waiting for Toney at school today.

Could UGA ever use a FB? When reviewing the film, UGA lacks a FB who can block, run and catch. Toney can do it all, perhaps even better than Brannan Southerland before he was injured.

At Tech, Williams could alternate between several positions in the backfield. He’s just that big, strong, fast and physical. It will be very interesting to see how all of this plays out.

Toney is good, but not as great as people give him credit. He doesn’t have the burst of speed to hit the holes. His first few steps are not fast enough (Taj Harris a great back too, just overshadowed and is better at vision for hitting the holes). Toney’s great when he is up against guys a lot smaller than him, but when he gets to the SEC, he’d get hammered. If you’ve watched his long runs, he’s easily caught from behind. His heart wasn’t in the Roswell game. The team looked down, and he did nothing to get them up. Body language showed he wasn’t there. A true champion gets it done in the big games. As far as Roswell, give credit to Quarterback Perry and defense MVP for season Joe Kizer, who is always over shadowed, but omnipresent. Don’t think Toney will be running back in SEC, maybe ACC though. Look for him to add some pounds and play FB or maybe linebacker. Wishing Toney luck, just keeping it real.

This kid would be the perfect fit at B back for Tech. Big body with speed and a bruising running style! Come on to Tech and start the Doak Walker Award talk!

Riddle me this….why in the heck does Cutcliffe want to stay at Duke?

Any chance he took notes from Saban and will bolt for the Rocky Top at season’s end?

I’ve seen Toney play a number of games this year. He is simply a natural and very gifted athlete. He is also a true gentleman and excellent student.

Toney should rethink the Tennessee committment and really look at UGA. Tennessee will need a number of years to rebuild and recruit… if they can get a top-shelf Coach. That’s a BIG “if”.

Given his talent and demeanor, he would work very well with Coach Richt and, potentially, have the opportunity to learn from the excellent slate of upper classment on the Dawg Squad.

At any rate, this young man deserves the sincere recognition for being both a great player and member of our community.
