Alabama RB Orwin Smith commits to Georgia Tech

Tailback Orwin Smith of Phenix City (Ala.) Central has committed to Georgia Tech.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Smith picked the Yellow Jackets over Vanderbilt and Southern Miss.

“I just think Orwin is the complete running back; he’ll fit into Georgia Tech’s system real well at the A-back position,” Central coach Ron Nelson said. “He’s a good runner and blocker, plus he can catch the ball out of the backfield.”

Why did Smith decide to go ahead and commit to Tech?

“Our season ended last week, and he was ready to get recruiting finished, too. I could always tell he really liked Georgia Tech, and he just talked it over with his parents before calling the coaches.”

Smith, who has been clocked in the 40-yard dash at 4.60 seconds, rushed for 1,252 yards and 18 touchdowns on 214 carries for Central this past season. He was recently voted “Mr. Centra,l” the school’s most popular senior by his classmates.

Smith is commitment No. 13 for the 2009 recruiting class at Tech.

Orwin was offered by Alabama, Auburn, and Clemson, among other fine Universities before he chose GA Tech.

We welcome Orwin, and his family, into the GA Tech family, and we look forward to them donning the white and gold in Bobby Dodd Stadium in the years to come.

Orwin, your new leader, Coach Paul Johnson, is a true player’s coach!

You are joining Tech at a great time in my alma mater’s rich history. You have made a wise decision!

GOOOOoooooo, Jackets!

Interesting — Smith also had offers from Alabama, Auburn, and Clemson, yet none of those schools were mentioned in this article.

Orwin looks to be a fantastic recruit and exactly the type of player that CPJ came to Georgia Tech to get on his football team! Congratulations, Orwin, and I look forward to seeing you on the flats in years to come!

Wow. This guy is blazing with his 4.6 speed. I thought RB’s were supposed to be fast. Are we sure he’s not playing on the OL?

Guy is slow as christmas.

No Bama player type.

Not even Auburn speed and they suck.

Guy is a slow RB who shows Tech talent sucks.

Antonio Foster, from Valdosta, has decommitted from Tennessee and has committed to GA Tech as well…

We look forward to seeing you and your family wearing the white and gold as well!

Welcome, Antonio

That 40 time that they have listed is very old and he has gotten much faster since then. Hell, they even said Dwyer had a 4.59 40 when we recruited him (he is much than that). His potential at the A-back position is out the roof. Give him a couple of years to develop and he will definitely be a good one.

Orwin and Antonio,
This was the best decision that you could have made. You will realize this the moment you hit the campus. I did and I now have the hardware and degree to prove it. Go Jackets!!!

Bama has a committment from Trent Richardson who is ranked #1 by Rivals.com and ESPN. I don’t think we will cry over Smith signing with GT. He probably would have been moved to another position anyway.

Bammer fans need to hope that they get mashed by UF in Atlanta so they don’t have to take the beating that they would get from the Big 12 rep in the nat champ game.

The commitments of Orwin Smith and Antonio Foster are welcome, and cause us happiness. These young gents are solid players, and it’s no surprise that they want to play on a winning Tech team, for a good coach. The stars are coming out, as we knew they would.

Orwin Smith is a great back. We see him as a great player in the future for Tech! All you other haters are mad because he’s not going to those SEC schools. FYI he was the first runningback offered by Auburn in the whole class of 2009. He picked Tech over Auburn, Alabama, Vandy, Southern Miss., UAB, South Alabama and Clemson and other schools They all didn’t offer him for no reason. GO TECH!!!!

I have been watching TECH since 73 and I think if you run a 6.5 you will still hit for a 30-40 yarder with the gaps and holes we make for you. KNOW-SHOW runs for 40 yards from the 20s but never seems to see the EZ because he gets tired. HAHAHA. Work HARD young man and you will get yours and I think you know that.

I have nowhere else to post since the AJC is no longer doing it, but has anyone else noticed it has been a while since the AJC ran the ‘your vote for Heisman’ crap?! Stafford and Moreno faulter and it disappears, interesting. I still say next year Dwyer just may be in the mix.

As far as the 40 time goes- that’s such an overrated and useless stat that is hyped by fans and the media. It’s handtimed which is a joke, and the only time you go start to finish for 40 is in punt/kickoff coverage. Trust me, track speed and football speed are too completely different arenas!

Yes…he skipped over… UF, UT, AU, Bama amd yes UGA.

Hey Techies

I now see why UGA fans hate you.

You guys are a joke.

That HS offense would get torn to shreds in the SEC! Don’t give me the Miss St. BS either. Everyone knows they are way way down.

Bama would never offer this RB in a million years, in fact he almost came as a preferred walkon. So enjoy your victories over glorified HS teams and Fla ST. who stink also, and will laugh when UGA beats your a* showing SEC dominance.

Oh, BTW, we’re #1 in the country.
