How It Went: The Jackets’ most recent commit visits Georgia Tech
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Fitzgerald defensive back Jemea Thomas, who committed to Georgia Tech nearly two weeks ago, was among the recruits in attendance during the Jackets’ 31-28 victory over Florida State at Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday.
“It was amazing,” Thomas said. “I loved every bit of it.
“The best part was meeting up with some of the others who have already decided to make Georgia Tech their future home,” said Thomas, who was greeted by recruits such as quarterback Jordan Luallen of Greenwood, Ind., and ECI defensive lineman J.C. Lanier.
Two of Thomas’ Fitzgerald teammates, junior Trenton Pruitt and sophomore Tevin Stewart, also attended the game.
“Trent and Tevin went and they both really love Tech too,” Thomas said.

How It Went: Six South Atlanta teammates visit Georgia Tech
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
South Atlanta was well represented during Georgia Tech’s 31-28 victory over Florida State on Saturday.
Teammates Derrick McQueen, Derrick Murray, Rashard Bell, Webster Foreman, Antonio Montgomery and Michael Daughtrey watched the action from the recruiting section at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
“I had never been in an environment like that,” said McQueen, South Atlanta’s sophomore starting quarterback. “It was my first time being at one of those schools.
“I was shocked that there were so many people. I had never seen so many people sitting and cheering for a team.”
McQueen and his teammates had an opportunity to tour Tech’s campus prior to the game.
“We had two redshirt freshman that walked us around the campus,” he said. “They showed us places like locker room, weight room, where they do film study and gave us a tour around the field.”
Murray, a senior safety, could be on the brink of receiving an offer from the Jackets.
“It was a good visit,” he said. “It made me feel at home. I loved the environment.
“I’d strongly consider going there.”

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Banneker’s Alfred Moreland, Emmanuel Lartey and Milton Patterson returned home today from a weekend trip to Oxford, Miss., highlighted by watching Ole Miss topple SEC foe Auburn on Saturday.
“It was loud and everybody was going crazy,” said Moreland, whose father drove the trio to Ole Miss. “There was a point in the game when we thought Auburn could come back.
“But it was a good game. And as far as the visit, everything was good.”
They enjoyed a view of the stadium from field level before setting into the recruiting section for kickoff.
“We got to go on the sideline before the game,” Moreland said. “We didn’t get to talk to [Ole Miss] coach [Houston] Nutt. He was doing a press conference after the game.”
Moreland and Lartey and have scholarship offers from Ole Miss. Neither committed during the visit.
A 5-foot-6, 170-pound running back, Moreland also has an offer from Air Force.
Lartey is a 5-foot-11, 170-pound defensive back, who has nearly 10 total offers.
The 5-foot-11, 230-pound Patterson has offers from Akron, South Carolina State and Savannah State.

How It Went: Miller Grove’s Gilstrap says Western Kentucky in lead
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Miller Grove defensive back/wide receiver Kenneth Gilstrap came away impressed from an official visit to Western Kentucky this past weekend, but he’s not ready to make a commitment to accept the school’s dual offer of a football/track scholarship.
Gilstrap visited through early Sunday evening before heading back to metro Atlanta and said via text message that the Hilltoppers “are my leader right now.”
“It was great,” he added. “I really see the growth in the [football] program and I know I can go in and play.”
Western Kentucky is the only college that has offered the blue-chip track sprinter scholarships in football and track and field. He has said that he wants to play both sports in college.
Gilstrap also has track offers from South Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas State, Louisville and Georgia Tech, and other football offers from Ohio, Richmond, Middle Tennessee and Alabama-Birmingham.
Gilstrap said Western Kentucky is interested in him at either football position.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Booker T. Washington cornerback Branden Smith said Friday night that he is replacing Auburn with archrival Alabama for one of his three remaining official visits.
“I just like what they have going on Alabama, especially with the defense,” Smith said. “When I first named my five official visits, Alabama just missed the list. But I’ve always been impressed with them. I’m glad it was able to work out for me to take an official visit there.”
Smith said he will travel to Alabama on Nov. 15, Florida State on Nov. 29, and UGA on Dec. 12. He has already taken recruiting trips to Florida and Tennessee.

Southwest DeKalb’s Mitchell gets UAB offer
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Southwest DeKalb wide receiver Jacoby Mitchell picked up an offer from Alabama-Birmingham last week, but admitted Sunday that his mind hasn’t exactly been on college recruiting after Southwest lost its second straight close game in Region 6-AAAA.
The Panthers lost 10-7 Saturday to Tucker dropping them to the region’s third playoff seed. The previous week, SWD lost 27-21 to Marist.
“It’s been tough,” he said just before Sunday afternoon film study for the regular-season finale against Stone Mountain. “I’m upset about the loss to Tucker last night.”
Mitchell, who also has been offered by Western Carolina, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Middle Tennessee and Akron. He plans a visit this weekend to Middle Tennessee, which celebrates its homecoming on Saturday.

Forum: Mississippi State rescinds scholarship offer
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
It’s a sad story, but one that is repeated every year, somewhere.
Banneker linebacker Milton Patterson had dreams of playing in the SEC, was offered by Mississippi State, and by the time he was ready to commit to the Bulldogs, he was told the offer had been rescinded. [Mississippi State was “full” at his position].
Should Patterson have committed as soon as he was offered by Mississippi State? He likely was waiting to see if other SEC programs, especially closer to home, were going to offer. However, then again, he could’ve committed to Mississippi State and then switched schools if a better off came along. But is that the right thing to do?
“I really wanted to play in the SEC,” Patterson said. “That was my first choice, but football is football.”
Patterson currently has offers from Akron, Savannah State and South Carolina State.

Georgia Tech gets “good one” with Fitzgerald DB Jemea Thomas
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Defensive back Jemea Thomas will Fitzgerald’s first player to sign with Georgia Tech or Georgia since Robby Pruitt began coaching at the school in 2000.
Thomas has committed to Tech. Said Pruitt, “Yes, he’s the first one, and he’s a good one. He can play anywhere, and I’m not just saying that. I’ve got another kid in the NFL, I’m telling you, [Thomas] is a player.”
Thomas impressed Tech’s coaches with how he performed against Early County safety Shawn Williams, who has committed to UGA.
“[Williams] is a good player, and Jemea played mostly on defense that game because of a hip injury,” Pruitt said. “Jemea really had a good game against Early County. He had some big hits in that game.”

Florida Gators make offer to Auburn commitment Lutzenkirchen
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Lassiter’s Philip Lutzenkirchen made an unofficial visit to Gainesville, Fla., last weekend. It seems the Gators would like to keep him there.
Florida made a scholarship offer this week to the 6-foot-4, 240-pound tight end, Lutzenkirchen’s father, Mike, told the AJC on Friday. The Lassiter senior is still committed to Auburn but has been exploring his options since the firing of Tigers offensive coordinator Tony Franklin. Florida makes the third school to offer since Franklin’s firing, joining South Carolina and Texas Tech.
Auburn was experimenting with the spread offense this season, which Lassiter runs efficiently with Lutzenkirchen as a predominately pass-catching tight end. He is concerned with what direction the new offense may go and is looking at other schools as a backup.
Lutzenkirchen is a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150. He has yet to take an official visit but was planning on visiting Auburn during their bowl week.

North Clayton defensive duo have colleges calling
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
North Clayton clinched the Region 4-AAAA title Thursday with a shutout win over Jonesboro. Defensive lineman Drew Thompson and Albert Carlisle were a big reason why and the duo has garnered interest from several schools, according to Eagles coach Rodney Hackney.
The College of Charleston and Richmond called about Thompson, a 6-0, 205-pounder. And Carlisle (5-11, 220) has interest from Tennessee Tech.
Neither player has received an offer.
“It’s just a matter of getting the right fit,” Hackney said.
