Columbus police captain’s son provides birthday surprise

Shaw tailback Kyle Griswould said he kept his Duke commitment “secret” until his father’s birthday.
Gordon Griswould is a captain in the Columbus Police Department. When family and family friends gathered recently for his 50th birthday party, the younger Griswould broke the news.
“He is real excited about Duke,” Kyle said. “He thinks they have a great mixture of academics and athletics.”
The 5-foot-9, 180-pound Griswould picked Duke over offers from Ball State and Troy. He was also being recruited by Georgia Tech, but had not been offered.
Griswould said longtime friend John Drew, who lives nearby but plays defensive tackle for rival Northside-Columbus, had some influence on his Duke decision. Drew committed last summer to the Blue Devils. “We’re excited about playing on the same team in college,” Griswould said.

Great mixture of academics and athletics… what would the percentages be for each one?

I can’t imagine a better birthday surprise than to be told by my son he was getting a free ride at a university like Duke. Getting to participate in D1 sports is just a bonus.
Congrats to the Griswould family!

What a classless act. Stealing the spotlight from his dad on his own birthday? That’s just a low blow. In all seriousness, what a great gift to give to a parent…”Hey guess what? You don’t have to pay for college!”
