Westside-Macon LB Julian Burnett wants to stay home

Robert Davis has been a head coach for 36 years and is the state’s second winningest coach of all time. But what he sees everyday while leading Westside-Macon is something he has not seen in along time. He sees linebacker Julian Burnett.

“He is as good I’ve had since Ronald Simmons,” said Davis, who coached Simmons at Warner Robins in the middle 1970s. Simmons was an All-American at FSU and is in the Florida State Hall of Fame. “[Burnett] is strong; he is fast, and he loves contact. I don’t know another way to describe a linebacker.”

Burnett is approaching 500 tackles for his career and has three defensive touchdowns this season. He is also academically qualified with a 3.4 grade-point average and a 930 SAT.

“He would love to play for one of the state schools,” Davis said. “Georgia is dickering with him right now. Ole Miss has offered, Vanderbilt wants him bad, N.C. State wants him. I just know one thing — somebody is going to get a real football player.”

Go to Vandy for your future. The degree from Vandy will be something that you will profit from forever.

Can’t argue against Vandy academically. However, Georgia can offer you excellent academics and a legitimate shot at playing in the NFL.

If “Georgia is dickering with him” and “Vandy wants him bad”, even with a 930 on the SAT, he must be undersized, at least by UGA standards. Wonder if CMR ever heard of Jessie Tuggle of Valdosta State and then the NFL? Maybe, too, the kid is as fast as required for SEC standards at linebacker - he might be a DE if size is not the issue but speed is - and that is why they are “dickering”.

Juliann is the truth…ESPN has been out to film the guy…

Burnett is “undersized”, but like Jessie Tuggle, it doesn’t make one bit of difference. He’s always around the ball and he’s bringing a big hit. Whoever gets him is getting an excellent football player.

GeoffDawg, Vandy sent 11 players to the NFL last year alone and 2 were 1st day picks. If you’d do a little homework you’ll find that vanderbilt has more linebackers in the NFL than any other position and more than most SEC teams.

Vandy has been top20 academically for it’s whole existance and now it’s becoming top20 in football, too.

A Vanderbilt degree AND the opportunity to play in the SEC are reasons why guys like David Price (Rays), Pedro Alverez (Pirates), Jay Cutler(Broncos), Jamie Duncan* (Bucs), Jon Goff* (Giants), Hunter Hillenmyer* (Bears), Jamie Winborn* (Broncos), Chris Williams (Bears), Earl Bennett (Bears), Marcus Buggs* (Bills), Matt Stewart* (Cardinals), Antony Jordon* (Colts), DeMond Winston* (Saints), Curtis Gatewood* (Redskins),etc. (*all LBs) choose Vanderbilt to make it to the NFL.

VANDY—top 20 in football, didn’t Duke just beat them. Good academic school, not an SEC football school, they need to play in the weaker ACC.

Does that mean he is “Doom[ed]” to a career in professional wrestling after accepting stolen televisions while in college? How is Robert these days?

Ron Simmons? Does that mean Burnett is “Doom[ed]” to a career in professional rasslin following an arrest for accepting stolen televisions?

This season I have seen Eric Fields of Northside-WR, Corrico Hawkins of Baldwin, and Burnett play. I will say this, Burnett was easily the best of that bunch! I have seen the Jessie Tuggle comparisons, and I must say they are very accurate!

Burnett is also a quality kid. UGA needs players that won’t spend time in jail. Great football player and great kid. I’d rather play with him than against him.

Julian is dedicated to playing in he middle. I asked him would he consider switching to safety he flat out refused. Whoever gets him will get a baller.
