Northside LB Eric Fields picks Clemson over UGA
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Northside-Warner Robins linebacker Eric Fields has ended his flirtation with UGA and committed again to Clemson, according to GoGamecocks.com.
“I like [Clemson interim coach Dabo Swinney],” Fields told the website. “They told me they want me to play free safety, where I can blitz a lot.”
Fields, an AJC Super 11 selection, committed early to Clemson but backed away from it in early September, saying he wanted to take official visits with both the Tigers and Georgia.
Fields took an unofficial visit to Georgia for the Alabama game with his high school teammate, defensive tackle Abry Jones, who has committed to UGA. According to Jones, UGA linebackers coach John Jancek spoke with Fields at the game but only about taking the ACT test again and not a scholarship.
Fields also told the website that he will only take an official visit to Clemson.

While I would have loved to have seen Fields as a Bulldog, I commend him on honoring his commitment to Clemson, Good Luck! (except when you play the ‘dawgs)

you guys are funny. Truth is he does not have a committable offer. Moody, Vasser, and Gillard already committed and they are waiting only for Jarvis Jones. This really irks me that you would post he committed to Clemson OVER Georgia. Get your facts straight. He had an offer then it filled up. No story here. He picked Clemson over his other offers.

Stupid - nobody would choose clemson over UGA. UGA is the best program in the country. Somting must have happened and we didn’t offer or he wasn’t smart enough for our school classes.

I guess this will ‘open’ back up again after the season because no one on that staff is remaining at Clemson. All the best Eric.

“They told me they want me to play free safety, where I can blitz a lot.” From a Free Safety position?
No wonder Clemson is in the tank this year - you would have thought they would have learned their lesson last year when they promised the Harper kid that he would get the first carry of the year against AL in the GA Dome - then the kid fumbles, and the season went downhill from there!

It’s funny that he would give an interim head coach as the reason for committing to Clemson. I guess you have to say something when Georgia doesn’t actually offer you.

bigdawgindouglasville,
Are you serious? Typical UGAy fan that thinks they are the best in the country. Georgia is probably a top 10 program but nothing more. Actually Clemson and Georgia are very similar: both have one national title and it was over 25 years ago, neither have been a factor in the national title since then, both have gotten good recruits in the past and fail every year (Georgia losing 15 of 18 to Florida), both fan bases are the most ignorant and arrogant in the country.

The Dawgs have their linbackers recruited for next year and they are waiting on Jarvis Jones. I saw this guy play in person and Jarvis is a much better player with better up side. If Jarvis decides to go to Texas or USC, I think we should use that scholarship on another defensive end. This position concerns me. We need an end who can rush and be a beast and explode the backfield. I hope we can get a good defensive rusher.

Those who come to this blog with an agenda are the ones who are ignorant. I think we are suppose to be commenting on the story. Evidently, the kid has not yet received an official offer from Georgia. Also, he may not qualify academically. So he has decided to take the sure thing: the Clemson offer. Doesn’t sound like a bad decision to me. He gets to play major college football and also get a free education.

Steve, you must be an extremely envious Tech fan. I know you can’t be a grad because you have an IQ of a rabid chipmonk. UGA and Clemson “very similar”? Check your facts, In this decade UGA is the top program in all the south. In this BCS era, we know national championships mean about as much as a cabinet position for a Ralph Nader presidency. The BCS is bought and paid for propaganda. USC, OSU, Oklahoma, LSU and Florida benefit from the media’s love affair with each, so a meaningless, paper “National Championship” is not a guage of a program. Look at wins. Consistency. You will see that UGA and Clemson are as similar as Cynthia McKinney and Sarah Palin. NOW- to the kid that commited to Clemson: He never had a UGA offer, so he could not have picked Clemson “over” UGA. No prospective student-athlete would commit to a mediocre school/football program with no coach (Dabo Swinney?? recruiting coordinator/head coach?? are you serious?) unless he had no offers to choose from.

Good Choice to Attend Clemson:
1) Academically superior - excellent schools in business, agriculture, and engineering. UGA is very good as well - but their engineering school in on North AVe!!!
2) Prettier Campus that is much easier to get around - UGA is spread out all over.
3) Best Football Stadium in the country - even louder than LSU!!!
4) 18 Total Championships - 13 ACC Titles and a National Title - UGA has only 15 overall titles and although they claim two NT - the 1942 Title was during the war years and is in dispute
Yes, we just went through our Goff/Donnan era - all wrapped up in Bowden - a very good coach that just missed making it Big. But he did leave us with talent (like Donnan did for UGA) and Clemson is poised to make a serious run at Conference and National Titles.
Welcome to Clemson!

Steve is an idiot - You are almost identical to Clemson, except you’re more delusional. Both teams think every year is the year and that they are the only team to have injuries and their schedule is the toughest. One hillbilly from Warner Robbins likes Clemson barn better than Georgia’s barn get over it.

The DAWGS DON’T WANT HIM! Can you idiots get that through your heads. We get the ones we want and the leftovers go to clemson or yech or the gayturds.
We get all the one’s we want, that’s why we are 6 point favorites over the gayturds and why after our revenge on lucky cry bamy we’ll play for the nc and the rest of you will be in boise idaho on some ugly blue field. yech s*cks.

anybody that doesn’t support the DAWGS is probably not smart enough to know that you have to cut taxes when you are fighting two wars and spending billions to bail out big business. Now subsidizing Exxon and bailing out big financial and insurance, are the kind of “socialist” programs I can get behind! The liberal media is in love with the gayturds. Urban Myer is an elitist, I bet he’s never flunked out of high school or gotten a dui!

the Dawgs get 99.9% of the recruits they want because, like another poster said, they’re the best program in the country. Usually, kids go to other programs because the classes at UGA are so hard the coaches know some won’t make it. If you look at the facts, UGA is as hard or harder to get into than the ivee league schools in the north. And, the classes are harder. Go Dawgs.

If this part of your story is correct, then how do you get that he “picked Clemson over Georgia?” You would not need to be to smart to pick the team that offered you a scholarship over the team that did not, now would you?

If you don’t have a scholarship offer from a particular school then how can you pick another school “over” that one? I am confused. I am sure you were just trying to bait people to your story, but this kid is JUCO bound. Nice try though.

FishwaterDawg,
According to the 2009 US News and World Report rankings, UGA is 20th among public universities and 58th overall, while Clemson is 22nd and 61st in each….am I missing something? Did the UGA newspaper come out with rankings that they are yet to release to the public? Or are you just another “dawg” spouting off at the mouth? Did you even go to school there?
Typical.

Best program in the country ? This is the usual UGA BS. Best program in the country in UGA definition has nothing to do with winning nat champs. It only has to do with recruiting. I’ve said it a million times. The only thing any coach has to do at UGA is recruit well. Nothing else is expected and CMR knows it. Maybe this is just a “wierd” kid who for some crazy reason wants to play in a conference where he has 5 times greater (and this is a fact) chance of graduating. Do we dare think he would think that way ?

Speak for yourself and for klimpson, steve. We are nothing like klimpson nor do we want to be. Our coaches wanted to see him take the ACT again before they pushed any further. Also steve UGA has more NCs than klimpson.

Carvell had written a number of articles this year just like this one … the headline claims a recruit chooses another school over UGA. Then you realize that UGA never offered him to begin with. Some folks have said that Carvell doesn’t do the headlines. Maybe not but he should start … cuz somebody is making him look ignorant.

After reading the comments, i find several things funny, no hilarious!! First, the Clemson fan (Steve) that is desperate enough to be on a UGA blog and say Clemson compares to UGA. ARE YOU SERIOUS? Thats beyond a response, and ridiculous. UGA is widely considered a top 10 program in every significant sport except basketball. The football program is behind only USC, Oklahoma, and OSU for wins this decade!!!! And we’re in the toughest conference!!!! PLEASE!!! And Wreckmaniac!!! You’re embarassing yourself with the graduating crap. Win a game or to and come back and we will give you some attention. Go Away!

wreckmaniac,
5 times greater chance of graduating? Obviously you are no engineer because math is not your strong suit….for this to be true the absolute highest % that would graduate from UGA would be 20% which we all know is much higher. Don’t let facts get in the way of your rage. Here is another little statistic for you…7 + 1 = 8 November 29th
Now get back to work for GeekSquad and let knowledgeable people discuss Mr. Fields future.
