Kell’s Anthony trying to get foot in door at Georgia, Texas
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Schools all over the Southeast are looking for a way to get Kell wideout Marlon Anthony. But the 6-foot-5, 190 pounder is still waiting for more offers.
Anthony said Sunday night that his high school coaches are seeking interest from Georgia and Texas. The Longhorns senior currently considers Arkansas, Louisville, Indiana, and Mississippi State as he top teams.
But he is content to wait to see who else may give him a look.
“One of my coaches is trying to get me in at Georgia,” Anthony said. “Another one is trying to get me in at Texas. They’re just helping me out.”
Anthony is a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150.

Georgia Tech a contender for Lassiter OT Wentz
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
After withdrawing his commitment from Stanford Sunday evening, Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Rutgers and Vanderbilt appear to be the new front-runners for Lassiter offensive tackle Camden Wentz.
A link to Tech is Jackets co-offensive line coach Mike Sewak, whose son, Michael Sewak, plays on the Lassiter offensive line alongside Wentz.
“Yeah, I do have a good relationship with [coach Sewak] and his family,” Wentz said. “I like Georgia Tech’s football program and the school.
“But it just has to be what feels right. I’d take an official [visit] there if they do offer. They’re definitely up there.”
Wentz, a member of the AJC’s The Georgia Top 150, visited Louisville on Saturday.

UGA-bound QB Aaron Murray has “successful” surgery on broken leg
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
UGA-bound quarterback Aaron Murray said he was excited about returning to school today after undergoing “successful” surgery on his broken left leg.
Murray told the AJC that doctors that said there was no major ligament damage found during last Friday’s two-hour operation to insert screws and metal plate to support the leg.
“I’m excited, and I feeling really good about everything,” Murray said. “I don’t know if it’s the pain medication or what, but I’m a lot less sore. I’m no longer laying in my bed in pain all day.
“I joked with my coach that I could play this week.”
Murray, who was ordered to stay home from school last week in order to keep his leg elevated to reduce swelling before surgery, said he will return to classes on Monday at Plant High. He said teachers will allow him to leave five minutes early on his crutches to get a headstart on other students.
Murray said he credited “a lot of people praying for me” to doctors not finding any extensive ligament damage, which could’ve threatened his ability to play at UGA. Murray said his parents talked with Georgia quarterbacks coach Mike Bobo over the weekend.
What the next step? Murray said he will meet with doctors later this week to review the surgery and discuss rehabilitation. He is still hoping for a miracle to return to action for Plant High by the playoffs, although it is likely his heralded high school career is over.
Murray again wanted to thank the UGA fans “for the support.” While confined to his bed last week, Murray said reading emails and Internet posts “really lifted my spirits.”
Murray is UGA’s most prolific commitment in its 2009 recruiting class, earning MVP honors of the Elite 11 QB Camp last summer. He picked Georgia among 53 scholarship offers.
Before being injured in the second quarter of last week’s game for Plant, Murray had a stellar performance, throwing for 205 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 95 yards and one touchdown.
Georgia coach Mark Richt has told Murray that the Bulldogs will honor his scholarship, even if he “never takes a snap again.”

Tucker DL Deion Roberson is finished for season with injury
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Tucker defensive tackle Deion Roberson, who has been out since dislocating his left ankle on the second play of the season, found out last week that his rehab will definitely keep him off the field the rest of the season.
The 6-foot-3, 258-pound senior had hoped he’d be able to return sometime during the playoffs, but the rehab will be “much longer” than first thought. He’ll now have to settle on watching practices and games from the sidelines and helping the Tigers in other ways, like giving pointers to younger players.
“It’s hard to take, but I’ve got to make sure my ankle will be ready for when I get to college,” he said.
Roberson said he has two official visits planned: Nov. 22 to Louisville and Jan. 16 to North Carolina State. He said he will reschedule a trip to West Virginia. He had originally planned a trip to Morgantown on Dec. 6, but had to cancel because that’s the same day he will take the SAT.
He also has been offered by Memphis, Maryland, East Carolina, Michigan State, Iowa State, Georgia Southern and South Alabama.
Clemson is still a possibility, but no offer has been made. “I like the campus, coaches, atmosphere and all of that,” he said, adding that despite Tommy Bowden’s recent resignation he’s still interested in the ACC school. “They’ve recruited me hard, but I’m going to take it day by day and we’ll see what happens.”

SW DeKalb’s Michael Johnson breaks his leg
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
A freak accident on the practice field late last week has Southwest DeKalb running back Michael Johnson looking at possibly missing the rest of the season with a broken leg.
Johnson said that while going through plays during Wednesday’s practice he got caught up in a bunch of players and someone fell on his left leg, breaking the fibula bone.
He’ll be out six weeks, which could mean he may return to the field if Southwest DeKalb (6-2) advances deep in the playoffs, like to the semifinals in the Georgia Dome.
He said it could have been worse. After the injury, he was still able to walk on it, “and it kind of mended it back,” so that the bone did not have to be re-set. “Instead of eight to 10 weeks, it’s six weeks,” he said.
The break prevented Johnson from visiting Western Carolina over the weekend. Western Carolina, Akron, Eastern Michigan, Eastern Kentucky and South Carolina State have offered. He visited South Carolina State two weeks ago.
He said recruiters have said they’re not concerned about the injury. “It’s an injury I can recover 100 percent from,” he said.

Mt. Zion WR Dexter Copeland hears from Georgia Tech
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Mt. Zion-Jonesboro wide receiver Dexter Copeland attended Georgia Tech’s homecoming game against Virginia Saturday.
“Tech is his top choice,” Mt. Zion coach Jarrett Laws said. “They are going to invite him back to another game.
Laws said Copeland’s only offer is from Alabama A&M.
“The offers will come,” he said.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior has 684 yards receiving this season and nine touchdowns. He averages more than 35 yards on punt returns.
Laws said Tech assistant coach Buzz Preston likes Copeland’s size and playability.
“They are requesting more film, and they see a lot of potential,” he said.
Laws said Copeland lost his starting role as quarterback last season to a sophomore.
“He never complained once,” he said. “He coached the kid on how to be a better quarterback and volunteered to be a wide receiver. He is my pseudo quarterback’s coach.”
Copeland carries a 3.1 GPA, and Laws said his work ethic is impeccable.
“He works at his craft everyday,” he said. “He is never afraid to be the go-to guy. He craves it.”

Lassiter OL Wentz backs off Stanford commitment, headed to Georgia Tech?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Will Georgia Tech now offer Lassiter offensive lineman Camden Wentz?
Wentz has maintained an open line of communication with the Jackets this season while being committed to Stanford. Wentz backed away from the Pac 10 school on Sunday night, and confirmed it with AJC only minutes after talking with Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh.
Why did Wentz decide to open his recruiting? Stanford had told Wentz that they wouldn’t be able to let him to know until at least December whether or not he had made it through admissions.
“It’s not because I don’t want to go to Stanford,” said Wentz, a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150. “It’s just that I’m looking out for myself. Stanford is still my No. 1.
“But I have to have a backup plan and shop around for myself. The coaches out there [at Stanford] want me to do this because they know the situation I’m in.”
Programs expected to show immediate interest in the 6-foot-3, 275-pound Wentz are Duke, Georgia Tech, Rutgers and Vanderbilt. And Wentz just returned home from a weekend visit to Louisville.
“I like the school a lot,” said Wentz, who was accompanied on the trip by his father. “Louisville is great and at the top of the line … “They didn’t offer, but they seemed very interested.”
Wentz said he is still undecided on which school he will visit on Saturday. He reiterated that there is still a slight chance he could wind up at Stanford if he gains admission into the university. “I’m not writing them off.”

UGA recruit Rantavious Wooten didn’t make LSU visit
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
UGA coaches and fans can feel a lot better about the commitment of wide receiver Rantavious Woote of Belle Glade, Fla.
There were rumors that Wooten might go ahead and take his official visit to LSU on Saturday for the Georgia game. However, Wooten confirmed to the AJC that he did not make it to LSU, and that he remains committed to UGA.
The 5-foot-10, 158-pound Wooten switched his commitment from LSU to UGA last week, but has been very low key about switch, which has fueled speculation that he may change his mind again in the future.

Stone Mountain LB Robert Nelson says “chance” he’ll commit to Georgia Tech
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Stone Mountain linebacker Robert Nelson, one of the state’s most heavily recruited players, said there’s a “chance” he’ll commit to Georgia Tech if he is offered by the Yellow Jackets.
Nelson, who is one of the state’s leaders in scholarship offers with 32, has been talking with Tech’s coaches and plans to attends the team’s Nov. 20 game against Miami.
Some of Nelson’s other favorites, among his offers, are Auburn, South Carolina and Tennessee.
“It feels good,” said Nelson, a 6-foot, 205-pound inside linebacker. “It lets me know that colleges have noticed my hard work and love for the game.”
“I look forward to going to college and playing at the next level,” he said.
Nelson is ranked as the 32nd best linebacker in the nation by Rivals.

Milton FB Toney Williams feels Tennessee’s pain
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
On hand for Tennessee’s 29-9 drubbing visiting Alabama on Saturday, Milton running back Toney Williams empathized with the Volunteers, whom he’ll join on scholarship next season.
Perhaps nobody better understands the Vols’ 3-5 struggles this season. Milton endured 3-7 seasons during Williams’ freshman and sophomore seasons and a 6-4 campaign his junior year. Finally now, thanks to Williams’ 1,541 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns, the Eagles (6-2, 5-2 in Region 6-AAAAA) are in contention to win their first region title since 1952.
Against Roswell last week, Williams learned yet another lesson in patience. He struggled to a season-low 100 yards and a touchdown, but the Eagles scored with nine seconds left to win 20-19.
“I can see (Tennessee’s) frustrated, but if you’re a competitor, you’ll keep competing,” Williams said. “I don’t see any quit in anybody.”
A player on The Georgia 150, Williams claims to never have doubted his ability during those seasons of struggle at Milton. Likewise, he claims he’s never once reconsidered his commitment to Tennessee.
“I really never got down myself,” Williams said. “I knew a season like we’re having was possible.”
