North Gwinnett DB earns first major-college offer

North Gwinnett cornerback Robert Nelson has been offered by Akron.

North Gwinnett coach Bob Sphire thinks there will be more offers in the future for the 5-10, 160-pound transfer from Tucker High.

“He moved from Tucker [and] he didn’t get on the field last year,” said Sphire. “Everything’s kind of heating up for him; he’s really having a great year.”

Akron’s Mid-American rival, Western Michigan, visited Tuesday to look at film on Nelson; Western Kentucky stopped by Wednesday.

“He really fits the mold of a true ‘cover corner,’” Sphire added. “I expect a lot more action on [Nelson].”

Florida trying to lure away Auburn recruit Lutzenkirchen

Lassiter tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen wanted to explore his options. And he’ll be doing that this weekend, by watching Florida’s game against Kentucky on Saturday.

Lutzenkirchen remains firmly committed to Auburn, but after the recent firing of Tiger offensive coordinator Tony Franklin, the 6-foot-4, 241 pounder decided to at least listen to other offers.

Lutzenkirchen’s father, Mike, said he and his son will travel to see the Gators play Kentucky on Saturday. Both Texas Tech and South Carolina have made offers since Franklin’s firing. Tennessee has been in touch, and Michigan called Lutzenkirchen this week.

The Trojan senior is a member of the AJC’s The Georgia Top 150. He said recently that he’ll wait to see who the Tigers hire before making any decisions.

UGA gets “a steal” with North Cobb DL Derrick Lott

North Cobb coach Shane Queen feels like Georgia “got a steal” with the recent commitment of his talented defensive tackle, Derrick Lott.

The 6-foot-4, 275-pound Lott was offered and committed to Bulldogs within a six-day span. Queen said it was a terrific personnel move by Georgia. With Lott’s much-improved grades and test scores, he appeared on the brink into turning into an overnight sensation in the recruiting world.

Within a day after Georgia’s offer, Florida called to see if Lott had any interest in the Gators. Queen felt like it was just the beginning of big-time colleges approaching Lott, while adding he was “very, very happy” to see Lott choose the Bulldogs.

“Derrick is your typical SEC defensive lineman, and he has the size, strength and speed to play at that level,” Queen said. “Georgia is getting a really good player and outstanding young man. It will be fun to see what he will do over the next few years in Athens.”

Lott said his recruiting is over and he is “100-percent” committed to Georgia.

Tennessee coming on strong to Henry County QB Drew Little

Henry County quarterback Drew Little is going to Tennessee’s game against Alabama on Saturday.

Little, a 6-foot-5, 245-pound member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150, just returned from Boston College on an official visit last weekend. He said he is going to discuss his decision with his parents and weigh all his options before committing.

Tennessee is searching for a quarterback after losing one of their two commitments at the position to Stanford last month. The Volunteers are considering Little as a scholarship candidate.

Little currently has offers from Boston College and Georgia State.

Georgia Tech, other schools, flocking to Brooks County

Brooks County was one of the places to be for recruiters in 1994 when Marcus Stroud led the Trojans to a state championship before heading to the University of Georgia and the NFL.

Many college coaches are now finding themselves back in Quitman, and it is not to share old Stroud stories. Players such as junior running back Martez Christopher (5-foot-9, 185 pounds) and junior tackle Lawrence Virgil (6-5, 270) are the reasons why.

“[Christopher] is a stick of dynamite. He benches 345 pounds and power cleans 315. He is a tough kid and is fast. Georgia Tech is really interested in him,” said Brooks coach Maurice Freeman. “Virgil moves well for a big guy, and schools like Clemson are really looking at him now.”

Meanwhile, senior fullback Arlestor McKinnon (6-1, 225) is being recruited by Georgia Southern. But based on his strong start at defensive end, (nine sacks) McKinnon could work himself into major-college offers, according to Freeman.

Heritage NG Melvin Jones to make first visits

Heritage’s Melvin Jones will take his first visits in the next three weeks.

Jones will travel to Alabama State on Nov. 8 and to Presbyterian on Nov. 15.

Presbyterian, in Clinton, S.C., is “highly interested” in the 6-foot-1, 310-pound defensive tackle, he said.

“They just started recruiting me after they saw my highlight,” Jones said. “They were impressed with my size and that I could move very good laterally.”

Jones has yet to receive an offer, but Middle Tennessee, Louisville, Memphis, Central Florida and Auburn have expressed interest. Jones said he wouldn’t necessarily be drawn by the lure of a bigger program.

“Whichever school I feel the most comfortable with, that’s the one I’m going to pick,” said Jones, who plans on majoring in business administration. “It’s not all about being an athlete. If it’s a good academic program, more than likely I’m going to like it.”

Georgia Tech recruit Brandon Watts resists N.C. State

Washington County linebacker Brandon Watts said North Carolina State is doing its best to lure him away from Georgia Tech.

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Watts was an early commitment to the Yellow Jackets and said he remains loyal.

“N.C. State will call me from time to time, just to check in with me and see if anything has changed,” Watts said. “I always tell them I appreciate them for calling, but that Georgia Tech is the place for me.”

Watts plans to make an unofficial visit to Tech for the Virginia game on Saturday.

Basketball: Marist’s Middleton to visit Navy

Marist two-sport star Dana Middleton is set to take an official visit for basketball to Navy next weekend. Middleton, also a leadoff hitter on the Marist softball team, made unofficial visits this past summer to North Carolina, Wake Forest and Davidson with her father, Al.

“We’ve already been (to UNC, Wake and Davidson) and (Dana) did really well at the (summer) Exposure Tournament in Las Vegas,” said Al Middleton. “She’s an incredible point guard and she’s a devastating scorer.”

Middleton, a combo guard, plans on making an official visit to Bucknell in a few weeks.
