Lowndes DB Greg Reid loves everything about Florida except for one thing
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Lowndes defensive back Greg Reid, the frontrunner for the state’s all-classification player of the year, turned heads when he made an unofficial visit to Georgia last Saturday.
However, Reid said he’s “totally committed” to Florida and loves everything about the Gators. Well except for one thing, the way he is greeted by Florida coach Urban Meyer.
“He’s kind of rough,” Reid said with a laugh. “He’s not the type of coach to shake your hand. He just comes up and punches you in the chest. And that man is pretty strong.”

Road Trip: Maryland offers McCoy as he preps for trip to Tech
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
A new scholarship offer arrived in the mail today for Northview defensive tackle Denzel McCoy, less than 48 hours before a visit to Georgia Tech on Saturday to watch the Jackets host Virginia.
“I’ve been talking to the offensive line coach [Tom Brattan] at Maryland,” said McCoy, who also has offers from Alabama, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, LSU, Memphis, North Carolina, N.C. State, Oregon, Penn State, Stanford, Vanderbilt and West Virginia. “He came to my school last month and said there would be an opportunity for them to offer me.
“It’s pretty exciting. I have family in Maryland.”
McCoy, who has already attended three Tech home games this season, hopes to accomplish a single goal on Saturday prior to the 3:30 p.m. kickoff at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
“I’m going to try to get more information as far as the academic programs they offer,” he said. “They’re an engineering school and I want to major in computer science.
“I want to look at the academic side into what they have versus what the other schools don’t have.”
McCoy, a junior, will be accompanied on his trip to Tech with his parents and a friend.

Recruiting Q&A: Camden County WR DeAngelo Smith
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Camden County wide receiver DeAngelo Smith, a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150 who has committed to South Carolina, talked about the recruiting process and his choice to play for Steve Spurrier.
— On what school he always has been a fan of: “Georgia and South Carolina. Georgia is still trying to recruit me. I’m getting information from other coaches.”
— On why he chose South Carolina: “I just wanted to try something new and make a name for myself. It’s not far away from home and they have good academics. To me it seemed like he [South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier] just likes getting wide receivers that can make plays. I believe I can make plays I just was waiting on my choices. When South Carolina told me they had a place for me as a wide receiver, I decided to go there and try to help them win.”
— On negative recruiting: “I haven’t really heard any. It’s all been them selling their own school.”
— If he weren’t a football player he’d be: “Basketball player. I play point, shooting guard and small forward.”
— On the first school to talk to him: “I think it was Western Carolina or Eastern Carolina.”
— On autographs and who he gets requests from: “I sign at least five every Friday. Teachers, kids, parents. Pretty much anybody.”
— On college games he’s been to as a fan: “Last year went to five or six Florida games with my position coach, Stacey Stewart. He’s a big Florida fan.”
— On reactions to his commitment: “People ask why you didn’t pick Florida or why you didn’t pick Georgia, but mostly people say I made a good decision. I’m not sure why I didn’t pick them. My mom didn’t want me to go to Florida because they recruit a lot of wide receivers.”
— On how he spends his time when he’s not involved with football or sports: “I just stay at home, talk with my mama. Watch football games.”
— On what he plans to study in college: “I’m thinking about criminal justice. I took a class for it. Did some investigations at the school. I like “The first 48.”

Tennesse-bound Toney Williams putting up big numbers for Milton
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Milton coach Scott Walker has always admired Toney Williams’ commitment, whether to training or to University of Tennessee, whose struggling 3-4 record still hasn’t made the Eagles running back think twice about accepting a scholarship.
“Barring something happening with [coach Phillip] Fulmer, that’s where he’s going,” Walker said of Williams, a player on The Georgia 150 who committed to the Vols two weeks before spring practices and plans to begin there academically this spring. “I don’t think he’s wavered one bit.”
Williams, who has 1,441 yards and 19 touchdowns rushing entering Friday’s Region 6-AAAAA game against visiting Roswell, plans to attend the Vols’ home game Saturday’s against Alabama.
Walker said his 6-foot-1, 227-pound back had 18 offers when he committed, and because of his size, could have fit into pretty much anyone’s offense.
“Probably the only school I hadn’t talked to [about Williams] in the SEC was LSU,” Walker said.

Cartersville’s Donovan Tate deciding between UGA and LSU for final trip
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Cartersville quarterback Donavan Tate said he is deciding between Georgia and LSU for his last official visit.
Tate is the son of former Georgia tailback Lars Tate.
“It’s down to those two,” Tate said. “Georgia is where my parents went to school, I’ve grown up watching a lot of games there.”
Tate has already taken a recruiting trip to USC, and said his next three official visits will be Michigan on Nov. 15, North Carolina on Nov. 22, and Alabama (undetermined).
Tate, who is projected to be a first-round selection in June’s baseball draft, said he has no preference over playing quarterback or safety in college.
