Fitzgerald DB Jemea Thomas commits to Tech

Fitzgerald defensive back Jemea Thomas committed to Georgia Tech on Tuesday.

Thomas picked the Yellow Jackets over offers from Vanderbilt, Purdue and Central Florida. He was also being heavily recruited by Clemson.

“It was close to home and I really liked everything about it,” Thomas said.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Thomas will likely either play at cornerback or A-back for the Jackets. “I think I made a great decision.”

Thomas was recently offered by Tech and said he enjoyed an “awesome” visit to campus for the Jackets’ 38-7 win over Mississippi State. He spoke Tuesday with Tech head coach Paul Johnson and cornerbacks coach Charles Kelly.

“They were happy that I went ahead and chose Georgia Tech,” he said. Thomas is commitment No. 12 for Tech’s 2009 recruiting class.

Thomas impressed Tech’s coaches with how he performed against Early County defensive back Shawn Williams in Fitzgerald’s win last Friday. Williams has committed to rival UGA.

Does anyone know how this kids ranks? Is he a 2 or 3 star in his position? How are we looking at the defensive back position moving forward b/c we are going to lose a ton on the d-line and they are one of the main reasons we are where we are. This is very important to replace these fellas w/ some monsters.

Great choice Mr. Thomas. If Georgia Tech was a stock, now would be a great time to buy. You’ve made a great choice and I look forward to seeing you play in the gold and white.

I’ve followed high school football, Fitzgerald in particular, for nearly 40 years and I’ve never seen a tougher, harder hitting DB. He never misses a tackle, and he never seems to be out of position. A very humble kid also. The only knock on him is he is his height is average and he does not have great speed but he more than makes up for any shortcomings. I saw the Fitz-Early game and he dominated Williams. GT has a winner.

This answer might be so simple I can’t recognize it. Help me out here; how does a db from 1 school dominate a db from the opposing school? I can understand how, if you were there, that 1 kid outplayerd the other in your estimation. Lets just call them both good ballplayers and wish them luck on their choices.

I was at the Fitz-Early game last friday also and was very impressed with Thomas he seemed to be making every defensive play. The regular fans there told me he usually plays running back to but he was hurt so they were just using him on defense to try to get him healthy for Brooks county this fri.

“Paddy” being AA teams fitzgerald and early have small teams so alot of the players play both ways. I belive DB is shawn williams primary position but he also plays on offense.

With Fitzgerald winning the state weightlifting championship (out of all classifications) the past 4-5 years straight, I’m surprised more players aren’t noticed by the bigger schools. Congrats Jemea - I’m a GT grad and know Fitzgerald very well. Welcome to the Flats! GO JACKETS!

Paddy…I should have used the word “overshadowed” instead of “dominated” as both of them played some offense but primarily played on defense. Both Williams and Thomas are gifted athletes, but it is natural for interested observers to draw comparisons when two superior players are on the same field. On that particular night, Thomas was the more outstanding.

Jemea, if you listen to Coach Johnson, and play your heart out, you’re going to be the greatest!

Thanks guys for the explanation. I now understand. Did not occur to me that these guys played both ways. Just thought of them as defensive players.

Good luck guys
