Basketball: Derrick Favors, nation’s No. 1 prospect, heads to Memphis
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
South Atlanta’s Derrick Favors, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 basketball prospect by Scout, is heading to Memphis on Saturday for an official visit.
Memphis is almost like a “home away from home” for Favors, according to South Atlanta coach Michael Reddick.
“Derrick has family around the Memphis area,” Reddick said, “and Derrick really likes [Memphis coach John Calipari]. He has done such a great job of coaching at Memphis, and gets the school a lot of media play.”
“And [Calipari] is not only an excellent college coach, he’s also an ex-NBA coach. He’s had a lot of success in basketball, and was about a minute away from winning the national championship.”
“So there’s a lot going for Memphis with Derrick.”
The 6-foot-9 Favors has already taken recruiting trips to Georgia Tech, Georgia, and N.C. State. He went to N.C. State last weekend and told Reddick that “it went well” but the two have not talked about it any further.
Favors is rumored to be deciding between Georgia Tech and Georgia.

Go to Kansas! Memphis can’t win the big one, Kansas and Bill Self have clearly shown they can.

Common Derrick… Memphis had their moment in the sun and wont be good again (of course thell dominate their weak conference, but wont be championship material) for the next 4 or so years.
GT is the place to be! Come REPRESENT the ATL D. Favors!! GT going to the FINAL 4 in 2010!
GT has more big games on ESPN with their tough ACC schedule than any other school hes debating on.
Come compete against the best!!

Derrick,
You know deep down that ATL is where it’s at. Come play at GT and have all your big time games on ESPN, play in front of your family and friends, and compete against the best.

Why wouldn’t he come to Memphis. Look at the recruits that will sign. John Wall, X Henry, and him. Plus Nolan Dennis and 1st team JUCO AA Will Coleman and 3rd team AA Darnell Dodson. That’s got title written all over it, and besides what has GT and Georgia done lately. Not much and he won’t have the talent around him to win a title at GT or Georgia. Memphis is flying under the radar again but Joe Lunardi knows what he’s talking about, he has Memphis as a #1 seed again this year and he’s usually money with his predictions. So that makes Memphis a #1 seed 3 out of the last 4 years and a 2 seed the other. That’s pretty impressive, so when Memphis is in Detroit next year playing in the Final Four don’t be surprised while Kansas, GT, and Georgia are at home watching Reke, Anderson, Kemp, Taggart, and Dozier doing the damn thang!

Derrick run with the Pack. State has an arena better than many NBA arenas. The Dail Basketball facility is second to none. We’ve got tradition. State has 2 National Championships, 3 Final Fours, 10 ACC Championships. Introducing the starting five by spotlight, playing music during the pregame, the alley-oop, and cutting down the nets after winning a championship are all due to NC State and its long storied past. If you come to State Coach Lowe will show you what you need to work on to get to the NBA (just read what some of the things JJ had to say about his one year at State). By the time you come to State though you won’t have to worry about point guard play as State will have experienced guards and Lorenzo Brown and possibly even John Wall will be coming into the program. It would be awesome to see you playing alongside fellow ATL ballers Lorenzo Brown and Richard Howell. Come play on Tobacco Road, the most storied and passionate area for college basektball. It’s where legends are born.

who are these NC STATE people kidding… I seriously doubt you guys end up with Wall. Do you really think that it matters to a kid that you won a national championship before they were born? I doubt it. However, watching coach V run around after that is to me one of the greatest sports moments I’ve seen. I’m a Memphis fan and would love to see him come here, but believe that he will probably be a yellow jacket. IF we get lucky and get Wall and Henry with what we along with Dodson, Coleman, and Dennis then we are going to be one hell of a team

Who are you kidding Tate? What has Memphis ever done besides be the runner-up in EVERYTHING. You play in a joke of a conference, you’ve never won anything of note, and yet State fans shouldn’t bring up our tradition to sell recruits? I’m not delusional enough to think NCSU has a great shot of landing Wall and/or Derrick, but I wouldn’t count us out. We were an afterthought in the recruitment of Hickson and that turned out fairly well for us. IF we get lucky enough to land Wall and Favors with what we have along with Brown, Howell, and Wood then we’re going to be one hell of a team as well.

Don’t count out Dennis Felton - he has a lot of experience with “one and done” players, mostly from his kicking them off or driving them away after one year!

Memphis is the only choice if you want to be surrounded by elite talent, in a great city, win a championship and be a high lottery pick.
Wall 5, Henry 5, Favors 5, Dodson 4, Dennis 4, Coleman 4
Help make the best recruiting class ever.

Favors do what ever is best for you and your family, but it would be GREAT if you teamed up with Udofia and the other committs at GT. OH yeah it would make a great headlines for the preseason scrimmage between Mfon Udofia’s Miller Grove and Derrick Favors’s South Atlanta squads if they both are tech committs.

Derrick, You want to win, right!? Go to MEMPHIS! They play “Little Sisters of the Poor” 25 times and you can build up your stats to make them look good. DON’T go to GEORGIA TECH!! There you will have to play DUKE and CAROLINA, and be on ESPN all the time where people across the country will probably see you lose to the many strong ACC teams! Plus, who wants to play road games in Boston and Miami and Washington DC and basketball crazy North Carolina when you can play in the garden spots of Conference USA: Birmingham and southern Mississippi are exciting winter trips. Plus, I head MEMPHIS might step up to get Georgia Southern on their schedule soon. Don’t go to GEORGIA TECH, Derrick. Go to MEMPHIS where you won’t have to sweat to win and you can have more free time to interview NBA agents. And especially——you won’t have to EVER face teams like DUKE or carolina!!

Sidney Blowes sucks. Stay away from NC State. Unless you want to play for a snake of a head coach. JJ was NBA ready when he got to Raleigh. Look what happened they centered the team around him and they had problems, where players came out and complained and the team that was picked to finish 4th ended up last. Yeah go play for that clown. $WW$

State’s current class is already considered by Rivals and ESPN as the #5 & #6 class respectively. Lowe is showing that State can recruit with the big boys, just like they used to. In this video interview Wall says that he’s 50/50 on whether he’d like to stay home or not. That’s a pretty good shot at landing Wall if you ask me. Also here in another article Wall says that he asked Favors if he was serious about State, and he said he was. He said he was having a good visit. There is a good possibility that State doesn’t land either Wall or Favors, but we are very much a player in their recruitment.

Memphis will be sure to show him the money like they do with their other one and done guys. I bet he ends up a Tiger. They are the perfect fit for one and done guys. They get to be showcased with other one and done players. They get to learn money management skills with all the illegal booster money Calipari pays them. They don’t have to go to class which allows them to work on their game. Memphis has the new era of college basketball figured out.

Sorry Memphis fans but D Rose isnt walking thru that door anytime soon, and the next few years youll be back to being a 1st round NCAA exit at best.
And clearly your lack of Basketball IQ is shown when you dare to lump UGA and GT in the same sentence. GT had put more players in the NBA than almost any other program in the nation. A claim Memphis DEF cannot make! Nor UGA or NC State, or Miami, or FSU.
09 is going to be our best team since 04 when we had Jack leading the way. And now with Bell taking a medical redshirt this season that means a seriously a good defensive stopper on the other teams best player for our NCAA run in 2010. And well have a good Junior pt guard in Miller, a great junior in Lawal, a great sophomore in Shumpert , and with or without D Favors in 09 tech will be LOADED!!
We could use u thou Favors… come represent the ATL in the best conference in the land!!

NCSU, GT and UGA are bottom feeders in Major Conferences. Collectively, these schools at best have won only 3 NCAA games in the last 3 years. Whereas, Memphis has posted 11-3 record during that same time, not bad for a C-USA team, huh. Fact is Memphis is an excellent Basketball Program and is poise to make it to the final 4 again this year, as well as next year. Memphis Out of conference schedule will be filled with the best of the SEC,Big East,Big Ten and Kansas in 09-2010. Derrick, come, showcase and hone year skills at Memphis with Coach Cal, a coach that will give you the coaching and the platform to get you to the next level. Favors, its your call, bottom feeders or a real chance for a national title.

Get a life Tech fans. Why go there? Nothing to see, nothing to do.
Kansas … ha! Memphis is up and coming. Sure they wanted to win the big one last year. But it was a tune up for things to come. Get ready to see a dynasty the likes of which haven’t been seen since the 70’s Wooden UCLA era.
Any smart b-ball prospect will take a good look at Memphis. Great city, top notch facility in the FedEx Forum, high profile coach, great recruits for the next 3 years & players heading to the NBA (No 1 pick in the draft this year).
Great high school and Juco basketball players will want to play for Coach Cal and the Tigers if they want to win the championship and draft high in the NBA.

What LaDeDa nothing to do? You’re in the middle of Atlanta retard. haha What’s up with these Memphis fans one visit and they think he is going there. He will end up at Georgia Tech he wants to go there. No talent lets see
Favors 5 star Lawal 5 star Shumpert 5 star Udofia 4 star peacock 4 star Holsey 4 star Miller 4 star Rice 4 star. Ha that’s no talent?

Willy, Rivals.com Has Lawal and Shumpert as 4 star recruits… How many NCAA games has GT won in the last 3 years with talent then? 0 The Tigers are Stacked and talented this year as well as next… to add Favors to the roster of the Tigers, the Tigers will be favorites to win the Title. Whereas adding Favors to the Yellowjacket roster GT would actually be able to compete in the ACC.. GT is currently a ACC bottom feeder it will take more than a Favor commitment to change the dynamics of that program.

Fullpressal, Rivals.con has Lawal and Favors as 5 star recuits… Why do you only bring up the last 3 years? We were in the NC in 04 not to long ago. GT has more talent then Memphis does right heading into 09. Tyeke Evans is a one and done and John Wall and Xavier Henry are not a guarentee to Memphis. We currently have 4 commits to Memphis’s one and our top rated recruit Mfon Udofia held your only recruit Nolan Dennis to 2 points. GT is not a bottom feeder in the ACC and will be competing for a championship in 09.
