Georgia State’s second football commitment will enroll in January

Mark Hogan Jr., whose father played for Bill Curry at Georgia Tech, is Georgia State’s second commitment for its 2009 football recruiting class.

Perhaps, most importantly from a historical perspective, Hogan will be the first football player to enroll at Georgia State when he begins taking classes in January. The other recruits are expected to join Hogan in the summer.

“It’s special to be the first player enrolled in the program,” Hogan said. “I feel very blessed to be part of the foundation of Georgia State football.”

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Hogan has Atlanta connections: His father, Mark Hogan Sr., played safety on Georgia Tech’s “Blackwatch” defense in 1985, while his family lived in Norcross until around 2001.

The younger Hogan graduated last June from Lincoln High of the Boston suburbs. He went to play wide receiver at Brown University, but left the team before classes started. Logan began searching for a new team when his family recently moved to Charlotte.

“I found out that Georgia State was starting up a football team, and my dad had a lot of great things to say about [Curry]. It was a great fit for me, and I’m excited about being part of history.”

I hope he’s faster than his dad! It’s great to be reading the sports page in San Diego and read a piece about a great guy that you played football with in high school 26 years or so ago.
