UGA honors scholarship to injured QB Aaron Murray, called “Bulldog forever”

Georgia-bound quarterback Aaron Murray of Tampa, Fla., told the AJC on Sunday night he was “overwhelmed” with the outpouring of support, especially from Bulldog fans, after breaking his left ankle.

Murray is likely finished with his prolific high school career after suffering the leg injury in last Thursday’s game for Plant High.

“It has been crazy, all the phone calls and emails, wishing me a speedy recovery … and praying for me,” Murray said.

“I want to thank everyone, especially all the Georgia fans. I’ve been reading some nice things they said on the [Internet], and I really appreciate all the support. It means a lot. It just lets me know I’m with the right school … I have never been more excited to be a Georgia Bulldog.”

Murray, who is determined to return to action this season for Plant, said he will know more about his injury after meeting with doctors this week. He is using crutches and hopes to be walking on his own in 4-6 weeks. He wants to be playing football again in 6-8 weeks.

“I had surgery on my shoulder two years ago, and I was way ahead of schedule with my recovery,” Murray said. “I’m going to work as hard as I can to be back as quick as I can this time, too … while following the advice of the doctors.”

Murray said he had long conversations with Georgia head coach Mark Richt and quarterbacks coach Mike Bobo.

“Coach Richt was very reassuring. He told me ‘Even if you could never take a snap again, and you’d still have your scholarship with us. You’re a Georgia Bulldog forever.’”

“It was great to hear that, it really made my time a lot less stressful in dealing with the injury.”

Murray is UGA’s most prolific commitment in its 2009 recruiting class, earning MVP honors of the Elite 11 QB Camp last summer. He picked Georgia among 53 scholarship offers.

Before being injured on Thursday, Murray had a stellar performance, throwing for 205 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 95 yards and one touchdown.

That other guy with my name is an insult to EVERYONE named Steve. I personally think it was quite classy of Coach Richt to have that kind of a commitment to that young man. I wish more people were like that in the world.

I hope Richt was right about his commitment. If that’s true, that’s a class-act move. I’m a GT grad but grew up an FSU fan, so I’ve learned that UF fans are idiots. Aaron - you’re coming to a great state. Can’t totally agree with the school you’ve picked, but you’ll find wonderful fans and great competition. And now that UGA(g) and GT are kicking butt, looks like this rivalry will be something special for a long time. Good luck, but go JACKETS!!!!!

Steve,

Don’t embarrass all the good Gator fans with the mean spirited, childish, comment you just made. He’s just a kid who has goals in life to achieve, obviously, unless yourself. And besides, give him about 5 years and he can write a check for more than you will ever be worth.

That was just pathetic Steve. Why don’t you wish his family death or something? That’s just sad of you.

BTW: Richt has always honored committments to his recruits. The “once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog” has always been in place in the CMR era. Just look at Caleb King and a couple of others before that. That’s partly why kids come to UGA.

Good luck Aaron!

Tough break Aaron, but you are a tough kid and will be back on the playing field before too long down the road. Good for UGA for honoring the scholarship. Look forward to some really great games when you are the DAWG qb and Tech has a very good team. Finally, don’t listen to the idiots who wish a player (for any team) harm. Just play a little harder when you go up against Florida. Get well soon.

Aaron, ignore Steve, I am sure you are smart enough to realize that he is jealous because you picked UGA over Florida. I am sure you will be ready to compete for the starting quarterback job at Georgia in a couple years and in my opinion, when you get stronger, with your ability to run and your accuracy, you will be starting for Georgia for at least two years. Hopefully we will win a nation title at least one of those years.

Like Coach Richt said, Bulldog forever. Several years ago we had a signee who came all the way from California as one of the most heralded recruits UGA ever had (Albert Hollis). In one of his first practices he had a catastrophic knee injury. He was at UGA for five years under scholarship and is a Bulldog forever. In 1979 the number 2 recruit in Georgia and a HS All American (Antonio Render) broke his neck in one of his first practices at UGA. He was on scholarship until he graduated, a Bulldog forever (He was a terror on the intramural field, too!). We honor our commitments.

I hope fans aren’t contacting him or giving him anything for that would be an NCAA violation. Considering the amount of arrests lately, I would be sure that the NCAA watchdogs will be visiting Athens very soon.

Something stinks in Athens and it’s the athletic department and lack of instutional control.

Aaron, I was not a Georgia fan until Coach Richt came aboard. He is a fine coach and truly cares about his players. Given the fact that he will honor your scholarship during your recovery, say a lot about the man who you’ll play for during your college career. Get well and I look forward to seeing you in action soon.

This is sort of a moot point. Georgia’s going to lose to LSU and Florida and probably drop another one to UK, Auburn or Tech.

You can disguise a weak offensive line against mediocre teams, but it’ll get exposed against good ones. See Clemson.

By Fred

October 20, 2008 9:50 AM | Link to this

Mark-

Before you start throwing pedals at Richt’s feet every college coach in America would do the same thing. The same thing happened last year with a player from SC who had cancer. I think Spurrier, Saban and Tubberville all assured him that he would still get a scholly. But hey Richt is a saint and I’m sure he’ll call for another celebration penalty and all the dawg fans will say that was just good sportsmanship or a classsy thing to do. The Gators are not going to be so kind this year.

For several of you jacket fans that posted nice things, thanks. Arron will be a great QB at GA. Get healed soon. Can’t wait to see you play. To Fred, you are wrong, not every coach in the U.S. would honor a comment and very few coaches are a class act.

Fred, it’s petals, not pedals. I don’t know what school you represent, but you’re a credit to their educational values. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery for Aaron. I don’t think every coach in the U.S. would honor a commitment to an injured athlete. That’s just one of the things that makes CMR a special person. We’re lucky to have him at UGA.

To Steve:

I am happy that you are a Gator, as I would really despise being associated with you in any fashion. Richt and UGA have shown a sense of honor in this case. It is something that should be noted by many. I remember a sityation back in the 80’s when Villanova honored a player’s basketball schoilarsship afyer it was determined that he had Marfan’s syndrome (a congenital heart condition).
