Schools try to lure away Clemson recruit Corico Hawkins

South Carolina and North Carolina State are trying to lure Baldwin linebacker Corico Hawkins, the state’s only player committed to Clemson.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Hawkins said the two schools contacted him after Tommy Bowden stepped down as Clemson’s coach on Monday. While Hawkins said he appreciated the interest, he said he is sticking by his commitment to the Tigers.

“I like Clemson and I want to be there for the next four years, [regardless of who is coach],” Hawkins said.

Hawkins said he was also contacted by Clemson interim coach Dabo Swinney. “He told me to hang in there. He said they are turning things around and to just hold on.”

Hawkins said he will know more about everything after he travels to Clemson for Saturday’s game with Georgia Tech.

Since Clemson’s coaching change, the Tigers have lost three commitments.

He’s making a big mistake sticking with that program going down the tubes. Rats are jumping off like a sinking ship. He should go to UGA—-the top program in the south, if he’s good enough.

Dabo says they are turning it around. He has been on the job under 48 hrs. COACH SPEAK….can’t anyone tell these kids the truth? You are not turning it around in under 2 days on the job. Why not just say, hey, it’s a mess over here but stick with us we still want you at Clemson..I think the kid would resopnd to that honest answer.

UGA?!? Is he good enough? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? He’s ranked 9th in the COUNTRY! UGA did talk to him but then said they already had their commitments for next year (probably people from way out of state)! He is a class act who will shine wherever he goes (grades AND talent)but also believes in the word he gives someone. Go Hawkins and Go Tigers!

top program n the South? the top program in the South’s son goes to Clemson. I think Bama would disagree with your statement. Not sure beating Hawaii ranks u as the best.

When was the last time the “top program in the south” won a National Championship. Oh yeah, it was 1980 the year before that sorry Clemson program shut out Herschel Walker and went on to win it.
