How It Went: Tucker’s Jonathan Davis shows up at UGA

Tucker linebacker Jonathan Davis, an AJC Super 11 selection, was a surprise guest at Georgia’s game against Tennessee on Saturday.

Could this develop into a head-to-head battle between the Bulldogs and Georgia Tech over arguably the state’s top player?

Tucker coach Franklin Stephens confirmed on Sunday night that UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner had called earlier in the week to both request senior film of Davis and offer recruiting tickets.

“[Garner] said they were evaluating Jonathan, and didn’t mention anything about a scholarship offer,” Stephens said. “I have no idea what Georgia is going to do … if they are going to offer him late or whatever. We’ll have to see how it all plays out.”

Davis has family connections at UGA, with his uncle Mitch Davis a former All-SEC linebacker for the Bulldogs. Davis has always expressed a strong interest in playing for Georgia, too.

The 5-foot-7, 205-pound Davis has offers from Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Boston College, Oklahoma State, Alabama-Birmingham and Middle Tennessee.

Stephens said Davis has yet to set up any official visits.

5 foot 7? Wow. Is there any talk of him switching to a different position in college?

I know Mitch Davis - he is a neighbor and a class act. This kid would be a great fit at UGA. Let’s hope everyone can get together and have Mitch Davis II between the hedges!

Is there any talk of getting some pass rushers in here? who care about undersized linebackers. If we continued to get pushed around by offensive lines in this conference we will never beat the fl, alabamas, lsu, etc.

Your right, he is a prefect fit for UGA… If he wants to be a criminal, and be a “national champion” every year…when was the last time UGA even played in a national championship????

If we really wanted him we’d have been on him before now. If yech wants him, and we got a scholarship left, why not keep him away from making that mistake.

Anyone who saw the 2006 semifinals in the Dome when Northside (20-17 victor)played St. Pius (Davis played there his sophomore year before transferring to Tucker) would not question his size, stature or heart. It is rare for a player on the losing team to be sought out by a large number of opponents who just secured a spot in the championship game, but that is what the Northside players did that evening.

He would be welcomed at either UGA or GT and would make an impact at either place.

Rennie Curran is not 5-8. He’s just under 5-10. A bit short, yes, but he makes up for it with speed and instincts.

5-10 is a lot different than 5-7. Unless Jonathan Davis runs a 4.4 and can return punts, he needs to take an offer to a school other than UGA. 5-7 isn’t going to cut it for a linebacker at UGA.

I thought all the 5’2” LB recruits went to Tech. Georgia should pass on this one.
