Georgia commit Fontaine prepares for visit to Athens

Following two visits to Athens during the summer, Dartmouth (Mass.) High’s Arthur Fontaine, a Georgia commit, gets his first game day experience at Sanford Stadium on Saturday when he takes an official visit to watch the Dogs host Tennessee.

“I’m really pumped for my first football game down there,” said Fontaine, who is considered the fifth-best tight end in the nation by Scout.com. “It will be real fun.

“I don’t know who my host will be, but I’m planning on seeing [other Georgia commits] Zach Mettenberger and Jordan Love.”

Fontaine will fly into Atlanta on Saturday morning and return home Sunday evening.

“I’ll get to Athens around noon on Saturday and just kind of go from there,” he said. “I’ll probably spend some time going around Athens and hanging out with some of the guys.

“I’ve been talking to Aaron Murray and some of the other [commits]. They tell me they love Georgia and it’s great. I kind of know what to expect this weekend, but I’m thrilled to see what it’s like.”

Fontaine said he hopes to attend one other home game this fall and plans to take an unofficial visit to Athens during the winter.

Dunwoody’s Malcolm Mitchell awaits Georgia Tech offer

Dunwoody defensive end Malcolm Mitchell has 10 scholarship offers, but he’s still waiting to hear back from Georgia Tech.

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Mitchell has been talking with Tech assistant Brian Jean-Mary. “He said they have some other [skills positions] to fill before they look at other defensive ends.”

Would Mitchell commit to Tech if offered? “I’m not quite sure. But I believe it’s a pretty good school. I wouldn’t mind attending there.”

Mitchell said has not set up official visits but said he has offers from South Carolina, West Virginia, Central Florida, East Carolina, Indiana, Louisville and Marshall.

Florida State, Arkansas inquire about Henry County QB Drew Little

Florida State and Arkansas have inquired about Henry County quarterback Drew Little.

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Little attended Florida State’s prospect camp last summer. The Seminoles want some senior film of Little and invited him to some games.

Arkansas also wants some game tapes to finish an evaluation of Little, who is a classic drop-back passer. The Razorbacks have really gotten serious about Little in recent days, insisting that he attends one of the team’s games.

“I’ve talked to FSU before, but Arkansas was a nice surprise,” Little said. “They have a great SEC program, and I feel like [Bobby Petrino] will turn things around quickly.”

Little has offers from Boston College and Georgia State. His coach thinks more scholarship papers are on the way.

“Personally, I think Drew is one of the best passers in the state, and that some other opportunities will open up for him before it’s over with,” Henry County coach Mike Rozier said.

Little is scheduled to take an official visit to Boston College on Oct. 18.

Tennessee gets involved with Miller Grove WR Stephen Grove

While Georgia Tech and UGA appear ready to battle it out over Miller Grove wide receiver Stephen Hill, other schools are quietly joining the race for the sleeper prospect.

Latrell Scott, Tennessee’s wide receivers coach, was scheduled to visit with Hill on Friday, according to Miller Grove coach Jasper Jewell.

“They really like Stephen a lot, but they’ve had trouble getting down here,” Jewell said. “However, with Tennessee playing at Georgia on Saturday, it was the perfect time for [Scott] to come over to our school on Friday.”

The 6-foot-5, 190-pound Hill was offered last week by Georgia Tech, Boston College Mississippi and Troy. Hill, who was an early commitment to Central Florida, has also been in contact with Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi State.

Perry WR Trey Smith adds Georgia State to list of offers

Perry wide receiver Trey Smith has been offered by Georgia State, which adds football in 2010.

The 6-foot-5, 205-pound Smith, an AJC The Georgia 150 selection, also has offers from Ball State, East Carolina, Marshall, Western Michigan, Akron, Kent State and East Carolina, but said he’s still open on his college choice.

Smith tried to commit to East Carolina, but was told to wait. He has also been in contact with Stanford.

“I’ve been talking to Stanford a lot; they try to see if you can qualify academically before they offer,” said Smith, who has a 3.8 GPA.

Georgia Tech interested in McNair WR Quintavious Graham

Georgia Tech has shown a recent interest in McNair wide receiver Quintavious Graham, coach Roderick Moore said.

“Georgia Tech Coach BJ [Brian Jean-Mary] called me asking about our wide receivers, and he knew Louisville had already offered Quintavious, so he wanted to know a little bit more about him,” he said.

Graham, 6-foot-1, 168 pounds, plays wide receiver and safety for the Mustangs but is primarily being recruited as a wide receiver.

Graham has offers from Louisville, Wisconsin and Oregon.

Roswell OL Cade Yates to check out Samford

Roswell tackle Cade Yates’ recruiting visit this weekend to Samford’s game against Appalachian State will be a homecoming of sorts. He’s looking forward to seeing Bulldogs quarterback Dustin Taliaferro, with whom he played two seasons at Roswell.

“I want to ask him what he likes about [Samford],” Yates said. “It wouldn’t change my decision to go there, but it’d be a plus.”

Yates has interest from Jacksonville State, Samford, Tennessee-Martin, Eastern Kentucky, Air Force, Georgia State, Furman and Wofford.

At 6-foot-2, 270 pounds, Yates expects he’ll have to bulk up to be competitive in college. He benches 300 pounds and squats 495, but attending Jacksonville State’s game last weekend convinced him he’d do better to bench about 375 and squat 600.

“In college, everything is stronger and faster,” he said. ““I wish I could grow a couple inches.”

Volunteers needed: UT coaches catching up on local recruits

Tennessee seems to be making the most of its time in Georgia this week. The Vol coaching staff will spend tonight at several area games to catch up on local recruits before Saturday’s 3:30 p.m. game with the 10th-ranked Bulldogs.

Defensive end coach Steve Caldwell and wide receivers coach Latrell Scott will visit the Milton-Walton matchup tonight at Raider Valley. Eagles tailback and Tennessee commitment Toney Williams won’t be the reason for the pair’s appearance.

Walton kicker and punter Brady Biggars has been in talks with the Vols for a scholarship offer. This will be his first chance to prove himself in a live game setting.

“It means a lot to have them come visit,” said Biggars, who is still waiting on his first scholarship offer. “We’ve talked for a while now, so having a guy like Coach Caldwell there makes me feel good about my chances.”

Caldwell is UT’s defensive ends coach as well as part-time special teams coordinator. Biggars went to a senior camp at Tennessee in the summer and attended the Vols game against UAB on Sept. 13.
