Will Jarvis Jones reschedule Texas visit?

Columbus-Carver linebacker Jarvis Jones, who is an AJC Super 11 selection and ranked as the state’s No. 2 prospect by Rivals, confirmed that he will no longer be taking an official visit to Texas on Oct. 18.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Jones, however, did not say whether he planned to reschedule the Texas visit, and if so, for which date.

When Carver coach Dell McGee was asked about the Texas trip, he said it had been “re-arranged” but did not know any other details.

Jones is in the process of setting up an official visit to Southern Cal for early November. His other finalists are Clemson, LSU, Georgia, Florida and Miami. The secretive Jones has yet to reveal any other official visits.

Baldwin LB to attend Georgia Tech-Clemson game

Baldwin linebacker Corico Hawkins will attend the Georgia Tech-Clemson game next Saturday.

Hawkins, an AJC The Georgia 150 selectee, committed to Clemson on Aug. 8.

“They say it’s the most exciting 25 seconds in college football,” Hawkins said, referring to Clemson’s tradition of having the players rub “Howard’s Rock” and run down the hill before each home game. “I’m really looking forward to that experience [as a Clemson player].”

Hawkins said despite his commitment to Clemson, he is being recruited by Georgia Tech, Florida, South Carolina and N.C. State.

“It’s nice of Georgia Tech to offer, but I’ll be there to support Clemson,” he said.

Hawkins will attend the game with his parents and Baldwin coach Jesse Hicks.

Swift still hoping for scholarship from Georgia Tech

Luke Swift, a running back from Center Grove High in Greenwood, Ind., hopes a scholarship offer is forthcoming from Georgia Tech, following an unofficial visit to watch the Jackets play Duke on Saturday.

“I’m not really sure how I stand, but I was finally able to get some film to them,” said Swift, who flew to Atlanta last weekend with teammate Jordan Luallen, who has committed to the Jackets.

“From what my recruiting coach saw, he said he really liked it and said they will be looking at it as a staff.”

It would be difficult for Swift, who has been best friends with Luallen since the fifth grade, to turn down an offer from Tech.

“It would be pretty awesome,” he said. “That would be very high on the option list. It would be very high up there.

“I love the campus. It’s a great location and a great school.”

The 6-foot1.5, 175-pound Swift, who is being recruited by Tech as a receiver, is also being courted by Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Indiana and Purdue.

How It Went: Miller Grove WR Stephen Hill impressed with Georgia Tech

Miller Grove’s Stephen Hill attended Saturday’s Duke-Georgia Tech game at Bobby Dodd Stadium, just a few days after receiving a scholarship offer from the Jackets.

“It was a nice visit. I really did like it,” said Hill, Scout.com’s 34th-best receiver in the country and a member of the AJC’s The Georgia Top 150. “I had a chance to meet the players after the game.”

Hill and his father also spoke with Tech coach Paul Johnson during the visit.

Hill said Johnson never pressured him into making a commitment to the Jackets. Much of their conversation focused on academics.

“He’s a real cool, laid back dude who wants me to do whatever I feel,” he said. “He really wants me to graduate [from Tech]. That’s the big thing I like about him.”

Tech made a very favorable impression on Hill. His top five has now swelled to a top six.

“Yeah, they actually did [gain ground],” he said. “They came into my top five, which already included Central Florida, who is at the top, Georgia, Tennessee, Boston College and Mississippi.”

He has offers from each of his favorites, with the exception of Georgia and Tennessee.

Inside the stat: Sprayberry RB David Carter

204

Total yards gained by Sprayberry’s David Carter (103 rushing on 10 carries and 101 receiving on four catches) in the Yellow Jackets’ 50-7 victory against Osborne. Carter, a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150, talked with staff writer Jay Stone about his game.

— Best game? “My freshman year I think I ran for 268 yards against [Osborne]. I had 214 against Centennial. I had fun doing both. I like being a factor in both the running and passing games.”

— Favorite play? “When I caught a pass for 84 yards. It was a wheel route. I was lined up as a back and motioned out as a receiver and caught a long pass.”

— Need more touches? “It’s not that important. As long as we’re winning, it doesn’t really matter. I have to split carries with our quarterback.”

— Two-way threat? “I know a lot of colleges I’ve talked to say they want a diverse back who can do everything, so I think that helps.”

Furr has nearly 15 offers, with his top three being Duke, Oklahoma State and Mississippi State.

Holy Innocents’ TE Jack Farrell wants to be part of Duke turnaround

Duke recruit Jack Farrell of Holy Innocents’ stayed to the bitter end of the Blue Devils’ 27-0 loss last weekend at Georgia Tech.

Flowery Branch QB Connor Shaw leaning toward following brother to Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech’s 27-0 victory against Duke on Saturday was extra-satisfying for Jackets recruit Connor Shaw, a junior at Flowery Branch.

He watched as older brother, Tech freshman quarterback Jaybo Shaw, enjoyed a banner day in his first start for the Jackets.

“It was real exciting to see Jaybo perform like that,” Connor Shaw said. “When I got up in the stands, my heart was pumping a million miles per hour.

“I was real nervous until that first snap. But he performed real well.”

Shaw, who has a scholarship offer from Tech, expects to make a commitment no later than the start of his senior season.

“I got my first offer [from Tech] this summer,” Shaw said. “And I’m being recruited by Vanderbilt, Clemson and Wake Forest.

“Georgia Tech is my number one right now.”

Clemson, Tech and Wake Forest are recruiting Shaw as an athlete. Vanderbilt likes Shaw as a quarterback, his current position at Flowery Branch.
