Jarvis Jones will make official visit to Southern Cal

Carver-Columbus linebacker Jarvis Jones, considered the state’s No. 1 football prospect by numerous recruiting publications, will take his first official visit to Texas on Oct. 18 and is setting up another one to Southern Cal for November.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Jones is also considering offers from Clemson, Georgia, LSU, Florida and Miami. Jones has denied rumors that he is leaning toward Clemson, saying that all schools are “equal.”

“I like those [seven schools], but I don’t have any favorites out of them,” the tight-lipped Jones said last week. “I’m open to all of them.”

Carver coach Dell McGee said he is proud of the way his prized prospect is dealing with recruiting. “First of all, he’s a great young man. He hasn’t been cocky about all the attention. He is just taking it all in stride, and handling everything in a very mature manner.”

Jones made an unofficial visit to Georgia for the Alabama game. The Bulldogs already have three commitments at linebacker, but have told Jones they would hold a scholarship open for him.

Georgia is also scouting Northside-Warner Robins linebacker Eric Fields, who backed out of an early commitment to Clemson. Also, UGA showed up to watch Westside-Macon linebacker Julian Burnett at practice on Wednesday.

Jackson involved in the recruiting cycle at Georgia Tech

Will Jackson, an offensive lineman for Farragut High in Knoxville, Tenn., has been interested in Georgia Tech for at least three years.

His first visit to Tech came during the summer following his freshman year when he took an academic tour.

“And I went to a game after my sophomore year when the old coaching staff was there,” he said. “I got an offer from Tech back in February of this year and took a visit in early March.

“When I committed to Tech [in July], I called them on Friday and was down there on Saturday morning. I was really impressed with the level of support I received. I didn’t feel like a number in the system.”

Jackson spends time each week sharing his feelings about Tech with other recruits.

“I talked to Roderick Sweeting and Ray Beno a good bit before they committed,” said Jackson, who will play guard or center for the Jackets.

He’s currently targeting Jamaal Patterson of Henry County, an AJC’s The Georgia Top 150 selection who is considered one of the premier receivers in the country.

“I’ve got Jamaal’s number, and I will be texting him,” Jackson said.

Basketball: Derrick Favors, nation’s No. 1 prospect, trims list

South Atlanta’s Derrick Favors, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 basketball prospect by Scout, has started weeding out his finalists.

The 6-foot-9 Favors has eliminated Connecticut and now will decide among six schools, according to his high school coach.

“Connecticut, they are a very good school and we looked very hard at them,” South Atlanta’s Michael Reddick said. “However, we have to start narrowing down the schools, so they were taken off the list.”

Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Memphis, Georgia, Florida State and N.C. State remain on Favors’ list.

Favors has taken official visits to Tech and Georgia, and has not scheduled any more.

Berkmar’s Davis sticks with Central Florida

Berkmar linebacker Troy Davis is almost certain he’ll honor his commitment to Central Florida. Davis, a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150, said he’d received early interest from schools like Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech, but in the end decided he was best suited to play for the Knights.

“The coaches, facilities, just the atmosphere down there; football is big down there,” Davis said of his reasons for sticking with Central Florida. “It’s kind of how it is here [in Gwinnett County].”

Davis, a converted lineman, was encouraged when the Central Florida coaching staff said he’d probably be at linebacker in the fall. The Berkmar standout made an unofficial visit to Central Florida for the South Florida game and is planning another visit the second week of December.

Dunwoody’s King says knee is healing

The knee injury that has kept Dunwoody linebacker Jerry King on the sideline this season won’t keep him out much longer, and he says it also hasn’t kept college recruiters from calling on him.

The 6-foot, 225-pound senior expects to be back in a couple of weeks for fourth-ranked (in AAA) Dunwoody. The Wildcats are idle this week.

King tore the ACL in his right knee during team workouts in May and had surgery to repair it in July. He thought he’d be ready to start the season, but he has stayed out for more rehab at the urging of team doctor Eric Steenlage. King says he doesn’t feel any pain in the knee, and hasn’t for a while, but decided to take the safer route for his return to the field.

He said that recruiters have assured him that they’re still interested, despite the injury.

He has not received any offers, but Wofford and Middle Tennessee State contact him nearly every week. He said Delaware, Tulane, Ball State, Central Florida and Tennessee State also have more than passing interest.

“They’ve been very supportive of me,” King said of recruiters.

Carver-Columbus OL Chris Hubbard leaving for UCLA trip

Carver-Columbus offensive lineman Chris Hubbard is off to Pasadena this weekend to watch UCLA battle Washington State.

“He is going to check out the scene, look at the campus and see what they have to offer academically,” head coach Dell McGee said. “He needs to see if UCLA is a good fit for Chris.”

“It’s going to be a great experience for Chris, He won’t be able to tell over the weekend, but it will help him decide if he wants to be that far away from his home and his family.”

Hubbard, a 6-foot-4, 250-pound member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150, has received offers from UCLA, Duke, UAB, Mississippi State and Troy.

McGee said if Hubbard develops a relationship with the coaches and players, he could see Hubbard attending UCLA next fall.

“Anything is possible,” he said. “It’s a great school and a great conference. It’s good to get out of your hometown and experience what college life has to offer. And it’s not always all about football.”

UGA makes things clear with Florida TE Orson Charles

If highly recruited tight end Orson Charles of Tampa, Fla., wasn’t already sure that he was still wanted by Georgia, Bulldogs tight end coach John Lilly made it clear last Saturday.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Charles met with Lilly during his unofficial visit to Georgia. Charles had heard rumors that he was no longer a high priority for the Bulldogs after the commitment of tight end Arthur Fontaine of Dartmouth, Mass., this past summer.

“Coach Lilly said Georgia still wants me the same as before, if not more,” Charles said. “He said Arthur and I are both tight ends, but different types of tight ends. We both excel at different things.”

Charles said the decision of Fontaine or any tight end at any college wouldn’t affect his final choice. “There’s competition everywhere, and I’m not scared of competition,” he said. “You’re going to have to battle to get on the field wherever you go.”

Charles, an AJC Super Southern 100 selection and ranked as the nation’s No. 2 tight end by Rivals, favors Miami, which has three commitments at his position. He also is considering Florida, Georgia and Florida State.

Boston College, Mississippi offer Miller Grove’s Stephen Hill

Why does it seem like colleges are noticing Miller Grove’s Stephen Hill all of sudden?

Boston College and Ole Miss offered Hill last week, and Alabama assistant Lance Thompson watched his game on Friday. The Crimson Tide, Georgia and Tennessee may be close to offering Hill, who made an early commitment to Central Florida.

What took everyone so long? “Stephen is not one of those kids who plays one particular sport and goes to camps all year for the one particular sport,” Miller Grove coach Jasper Jewell said of his wide receiver.

“Stephen plays three varsity sports, and dividing his time between the three put him a little behind with colleges. But he’s catching up now, and I feel like there is going to be a lot more after him before it’s all over with.”

Hill has made two unofficial visits to Georgia, including for last Saturday’s Alabama game.

The 6-foot-5, 190-pound Hill plays basketball and competes in track, winning the Class AAAA championship in the long jump.

Alabama-bound Warmack looking to gain weight before college

Westlake offensive lineman Chance Warmack, who has committed to Alabama, said if you saw the Georgia game, then you might understand why he needs to gain weight before enrolling in college.

Warmack began this season at 6-foot-2, 340 pounds, but has dropped 20 pounds due to a rigorous conditioning program by his high school coaches.

“Did you see Alabama’s nose tackle Terrence Cody? He’s [6-5 and] 365 pounds … wow,” Warmack said. “That’s the kind of guys I have to get ready to block in spring practice.

“I dropped the weight for my senior season at Westlake so I could be quicker, and move my feet better. But I know I’ll definitely have to gain weight back in college.”

Warmack will graduate from Westlake early and enroll at Alabama in January.
