How It Went: Georgia improves its chances with WR Marlon Brown of Memphis

Georgia appears to have improved its chances with Marlon Brown of Memphis, one of the nation’s top wide receivers.

The 6-foot-5, 205-pound Brown made an official visit to Athens this past weekend.

Brown was traveling on Sunday and unable to reach on phone, but he did talk to some of Georgia’s 2009 commitments before leaving campus. Brown is ranked as the country’s No. 9 wide receiver by Rivals.

“Marlon said he had a great time, a blast,” said quarterback Aaron Murray of Tampa, Fla., who has committed to UGA.

“He said he thought Georgia was some small country town, but that it was actually nothing like that. He said ‘this place is unbelievable.’ He was really impressed with everything .. the coaches, the players, the stadium, the atmosphere.”

How does Murray feel about UGA’s chances of landing Brown? “I’m not sure, but I definitely feel our chances are a lot better than before his visit. We’ll see in the end how it all works out.”

UGA was the first of five official visits for Brown, who said he also plans recruiting trips to Tennessee, Ohio State, LSU and Florida.

McEachern’s Terrell Mitchell talks more with Georgia coaches

McEachern’s Terrell Mitchell said he got to talk more with Georgia tight ends coach John Lilly at the Alabama game on Saturday.

“I saw Coach Lilly for a few minutes before the game, and he said he was glad I could make it and that it looked like I had lost a little weight,” Mitchell said.

“I was surprised he noticed my weight, because I have lost a few pounds recently after being sick. But I’ll gain it back in no time, I’m sure.”

The 6-foot-6, 220-pound Mitchell said Georgia has promised an offer if he scores well on next Saturday’s SAT. He already has offers from Michigan, West Virginia, Kentucky, Louisville, South Carolina and Clemson.

How It Went: Vasser makes the recruiting rounds in Athens

Aside from the 41-30 loss to Alabama, Georgia commit Chase Vasser still enjoyed Saturday night’s blackout at Sanford Stadium.

The Chestatee linebacker was able to spend time with several other recruits.

“I got to meet Mike Gilliard, Jarvis Jones, and Abry Jones,” said Vasser, a member of the AJC’s The Georgia Top 150.

“I had talked to these guys on the phone before, but it was good to get to meet them in person.”

Vasser plans to be in Athens on Oct. 11 when Georgia hosts Tennessee.

How It Went: Northview’s McCoy analyzes trip to Georgia

Northview junior defensive tackle Denzel McCoy’s visit to Athens on Saturday began with a stop at the Butts-Mehre building at 3 p.m.

“We checked in and watched a highlight film,” said the 6-foot-4, 270-pound McCoy, who has scholarship offers Alabama, Duke, Georgia Tech, Memphis North Carolina, Oregon, Penn State, Stanford, Vanderbilt and West Virginia.

“I got to meet with a few of the [assistant] coaches. Coach [Mark] Richt came in and talked to us. Then we took a bus over to the stadium.”

One of the highlights was walking on the field prior to kickoff.

“That was pretty cool,” he said. “It was pretty exciting. And it was loud there, before and during the game.”

McCoy didn’t receive an offer from the Dogs on Saturday. But he remains optimistic.

“I think what they’re waiting on is more film on me from this year,” he said.

McCoy plans to attend Saturday’s Kentucky-Alabama game in Tuscaloosa.
