Road Trip: Northview junior DT McCoy to visit Athens
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
He didn’t grow up a Georgia fan, but Northview junior defensive tackle Denzel McCoy is still hoping for a scholarship offer from the Bulldogs.
“Georgia is a great school and it’s close to home,” said McCoy, who will be at Sanford Stadium Saturday night to watch the Dogs play Alabama. “They offer a great education and have a winning program.”
McCoy, who attended Saturday’s Mississippi State-Georgia Tech game in Atlanta, was born in North Carolina. He moved to Georgia during the second grade after calling Florida home for a brief period of time.
The 6-foot-4, 270-pound lineman picked up a scholarship offer from Oregon earlier today. He already had offers from Alabama, Duke, Georgia Tech, Memphis, North Carolina, N.C. State, Penn State, Stanford, Vanderbilt and West Virginia.
He’s eager to see if the Dogs will make their move this weekend when he attends the highly-anticipated SEC contest along with his parents.
“I’d say it’s 50-50 that Georgia will offer me on Saturday,” said McCoy, who is being recruited by Bulldogs assistant coach Rodney Garner. “Hopefully, they will. I’ve been receiving a lot of e-mails and mail from them.”

Tampa, Fla., quarterback Aaron Murray, who committed to Georgia, isn’t wasting any time making it to Athens.
After Plant High plays tonight, Murray is going to change clothes and begin his seven-hour journey. He will spend the night near the Georgia border, and plans to be at the Bulldogs’ football offices around 11 a.m, about nine hours before kickoff.
“This is my first trip for a game, and I want to make the most of every minute of it,” Murray said.
Murray is bringing a special guest — Orson Charles, his Plant teammate who is ranked as the nation’s No. 2 tight end by Rivals. Charles favors Miami, but also is considering Georgia, Florida, and Florida State.
Rarely a day goes by without Murray trying to recruit Charles for the Bulldogs. “I’m always mentioning Georgia, but he knows in the end it’s his decision to make, and no one else.”

Basketball: Derrick Favors headed to Georgia Tech for official visit
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

South Atlanta’s Derrick Favors, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 basketball prospect by Scout, is handling the pressures of recruiting well, according to his coach.
The 6-foot-9 Favors is making an official visit to Georgia Tech this weekend. He took his first recruiting trip to Georgia a couple of weeks ago, and has yet to decide on any other visits. He is also considering Kentucky, Memphis, Connecticut, N.C. State and Florida State.
“Like the champion he is, Derrick is doing just fine with the [recruiting process],” South Atlanta’s Michael Reddick said. “He’s doing research about each school, asking a lot of questions and figuring everything out. He’s in control of the situation.”
