Brunswick’s Slay fighting for grades

Brunswick’s Darius Slay is a certified major-college prospect.

It is just a matter of when and where. Through three games, the 6-foot-1, 190-pounder senior has four interceptions and returned one of those 45 yards for a touchdown. He also has a 17-yard touchdown catch.

The only other catch is academics. He is working to improve his 2.4 grade-point average and is awaiting the results from his first try at the SAT.

“I get a lot of calls from college coaches, and they want to see me improve my GPA,” said Slay, who leads a Brunswick team that could have three other players sign with Division I teams. “Some see me on offense and others on defense. It doesn’t really matter to me, but I like defense better.”

Clemson, South Carolina and Troy, among others, are keeping close tabs on Slay, fully aware of another number he has passed — a 40-yard dash of 4.38 seconds.

“Him being a qualifier is going to go down to the wire,” Brunswick coach Victor Floyd said. “[College] coaches tell me if he does make it, he’ll go almost anywhere he wants.”
