Georgia commits Fontaine and Murray set visits to Athens

Residing 1,054 miles from Athens will be a real bummer this weekend for Georgia commit Arthur Fontaine of Dartmouth High in North Dartmouth, Mass.

Scout.com’s fifth-best tight end in the nation by will relegated to viewing Saturday night’s SEC showdown between the Dogs and Alabama on ESPN from his home.

“I can’t go this weekend,” Fontaine wrote to the AJC in a text message. “But we’ve got a long weekend for the Tennessee game [on Oct. 11].

“I’m going to the Tennessee game.”

Despite the temptation of taking in a game and touring campuses closer to home, the 6-foot-5, 235-pound Fontaine said he’s remained loyal to the Dogs.

“I haven’t visited any other schools,” he said. “I’m committed to Georgia.”

Another prized-recruit, quarterback Aaron Murray of Tampa, Fla. confirmed to the AJC Monday evening that he will attend Saturday evening’s contest in Sanford Stadium.

It will be the first trip to Athens this season for Murray, a member of the AJC’s The Super Southern 100.

Central Florida “mad” at UGA for recruiting Miller Grove WR

Central Florida, as expected, is unhappy with Georgia and Tennessee trying to lure away Miller Grove wide receiver Stephen Hill.

The 6-foot-5, 190-pound Hill committed to Central Florida this past summer, and he routinely talks with David Kelly, who coaches wide receivers for the Knights.

“Coach Kelly was like ‘the fans and alums are kind of mad [about Georgia],’” Hill said. “But I think he expected some other schools to come after me eventually, that’s just the recruiting process.”

It is common for major-college prospects who commit early to continue to be recruited by competing schools until February’s national signing day. Commitments are not binding. Georgia recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner went an extra step with Hill, asking for permission to recruit him. It was granted.

Hill made an unofficial visit to Georgia’s game against Central Michigan and plans to return on Saturday to watch the Bulldogs play Alabama. Hill said neither Georgia or Tennessee have offered, but both have hinted at scholarships.

Nevertheless, Hill said it is not automatic that he will switch from Central Florida if he gets new offers. “I’m still with Central Florida, that’s where I want to be,” Hill said. “If other schools offer, then I’d have to talk it over with my parents and we’d make the best decision.”

Ironically, Kelly is a former assistant at both Georgia and Georgia Tech, and he is known for being one of college football’s top recruiters.

[Note: Many of Georgia’s 14 commitments for 2009 are still being recruited by other schools, including Chestatee linebacker Chase Vasser, who picked the Bulldogs last January. He was offered last week by Alabama, South Carolina and Wake Forest.]

Basketball: Derrick Favors, nation’s No. 1 prospect, has Georgia Tech and UGA as finalists

South Atlanta’s Derrick Favors, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 basketball prospect by Scout, has listed Georgia Tech and Georgia among his finalists.

The 6-foot-9 Favors will make the second of his five official visits to Tech this weekend. He took his first recruiting trip to Georgia two weeks ago.

“When you have two outstanding in-state programs, it is always in your best interests to take a close look at them, and that’s what Derrick is doing,” South Atlanta coach Michael Reddick said.

The other finalists for Favors are Kentucky, Memphis, Connecticut and Florida State. Tech has a lot of appeal to Favors, according to his coach.

“Georgia Tech, of course, is right here in the city, and that’s always a great thing. It would allow people around here, such as his family and his friends, the opportunity to see him play in person. And Georgia Tech has a great tradition of putting players in the NBA on a regular basis. Derrick is excited about this weekend.”

How did it go at Georgia? “It went as good, or maybe even better, than you could expect. Some of it could have had to do with the fact it was his first official visit, but he really likes Georgia. He said he felt very comfortable there. They’ve been around Derrick since he was in middle school.”

Favors has not scheduled any more visits.

Newnan’s Ogletree hints that Miami is the favorite

Newnan safety Alec Ogletree, who is the leading candidate to be the state’s top prospect for 2010, hinted that Miami is his early favorite.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Ogletree said Clemson was his first offer last summer. He then got scholarship letters from Georgia, LSU, Miami, South Carolina, Florida, Florida State and South Carolina, among others.

However, Ogletree admitted the offer from Miami stood out from the others.

“It’s just that Miami was my team [growing up],” Ogletree said. “It was always my dream when I was younger to play for Miami, so it’s kind of hard believing that I finally got offered by them. It’s like my dream came true.”

Ogletree said wanted to try to visit as many colleges as possible before announcing a final choice.

Florida State requests film of Cairo defensive tackle

Florida State has requested film on Cairo defensive tackle Montavious Williams, who committed to Troy.

“FSU didn’t really say anything other than they wanted some senior film on Montavious,” Cairo coach Tom Fallaw said. “FSU hasn’t offered, they just want to take a close look.”

The 6-foot-2, 260-pound Williams is known for his hustle and “giving 100-percent” every play, according to Fallaw.

UGA shows interest in Tucker’s Roberson despite possible season-ending injury

Tucker defensive lineman Deion Roberson has been on crutches since injuring his ankle on the second play of the season.

He is expected to have the cast taken off the left ankle today and have it replaced with a walkable boot. Tucker coach Franklin Stephens called Roberson “out for the season” last week.

The 6-foot-3, 258-pound defensive lineman says he’s hoping to play again this season, provided Tucker makes a playoff run. “I’m hoping by maybe second or third round,” he said.

He has been invited to this weekend’s Georgia-Alabama game in Athens.

“I might go. It’s my birthday,” he said.

Roberson said he talked to Georgia recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner last week after he was invited to the game.

“He heard about the injury and just told me to keep a good mindset,” Roberson said. “He also said they’re still looking at me.”

Roberson said it has been difficult to watch from the sidelines as top-ranked (Class AAAA) Tucker has built a 4-0 record. He’ll miss big region games against rivals Marist this week and Chamblee on Oct. 17.

“I’m just keeping a positive mindset and trying not to think of the negatives,” he said,

Roberson has been offered by North Carolina State, Memphis, Duke, Iowa State, Georgia Southern and South Alabama.
