Basketball: Derrick Favors, nation’s No. 1 prospect, has Georgia Tech and UGA as finalists

South Atlanta’s Derrick Favors, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 basketball prospect by Scout, has listed Georgia Tech and Georgia among his finalists.

The 6-foot-9 Favors will make the second of his five official visits to Tech this weekend. He took his first recruiting trip to Georgia two weeks ago.

“When you have two outstanding in-state programs, it is always in your best interests to take a close look at them, and that’s what Derrick is doing,” South Atlanta coach Michael Reddick said.

The other finalists for Favors are Kentucky, Memphis, Connecticut and Florida State. Tech has a lot of appeal to Favors, according to his coach.

“Georgia Tech, of course, is right here in the city, and that’s always a great thing. It would allow people around here, such as his family and his friends, the opportunity to see him play in person. And Georgia Tech has a great tradition of putting players in the NBA on a regular basis. Derrick is excited about this weekend.”

How did it go at Georgia? “It went as good, or maybe even better, than you could expect. Some of it could have had to do with the fact it was his first official visit, but he really likes Georgia. He said he felt very comfortable there. They’ve been around Derrick since he was in middle school.”

Favors has not scheduled any more visits.

GTFAN is right about one thing… Tech ain’t a football school!

Then again, they haven’t been much of a basketball school lately, either.

I say why get lost in the shuffle at an established program (I mean Memphis, UNC, Kansas - not Tech….) when you could be the program at Georgia?

Besides, kids wanna get away when they go to college…Athens is a nice little drive from the ATL; close but not close enough to be the same hum-drum of the hometown.

Help propel Georgia to lofty heights, Derrick, and you’ll be a rockstart on campus.

Spend a little time with Knowshon Moreno and see how good it is to be loved by the red and black, buddy!

Go to Memphis - they already have the #1 class coming in for 2009. You could add the missing big man piece. Coach Cal knows you will only stay for a year. That’s cool - go to Memphis, win a championship, go to the NBA. Go to UGA or Tech - lose a bunch of games - still get drafted. Might as well compete for and win a championship

I dont know why i find it so funny when people actually think the SEC is good at Basketball… but it is…. one good year and all of the sudden they are a good conference…. ACC is basketball. UNC, Duke, GaTech, VaTech, Maryland, Wake…. I can go down the roster, but at the end of the day the whole country knows that SEC is football and ACC is basketball…..

Go to GaTech, you’ll be in the ACC, and you’ll be under Paul Hewitt.

Oh ya, in the past 10 years, GT has beat UGA 8 times in Basketball….. And for the 2 losses, thats because our players actually go to the NBA….

Guys Derrick Favors is worth a one and done at GT. Look at what Derrick Rose and Carmelo Anthony did… lead their team to a championship and Favors has that type of talent. He is rated higher then Bosh, Crittenton and Young were in high school too.

Bravesfan we have the #4 recruiting class in the nation and scratch Noel Johnson and enter the name Kenny Boynton. He will be at Tech this weekend too and he is a top 10 player and better then Johnson.

Also Favors isn’t considring Tennesee and they have never even made it past the suite 16 hahahaha

HAHA Tyler Tennesee has never made it past the sweet 16 and you’re talking championship haha. If you want to play with a better more talented team go to GT or if you want to play with below avergae players that never are on TV go to UGA. The choice is simple.

By Robert

September 22, 2008 7:56 PM | Link to this

If he chooses GT, they will be ranked top 5 preseason in 2009 and they will have the best starting 5 in the ACC and arguably the best in the nation. If Favors and Boynton both join forces at GT, they will make a run at the championship in 2009. There’s no doubt about it.

Paul Hewitt knows how to handle talent around him and playing in ACC is the way to go to the NBA.

The rest of the ACC will closely be watching GT for sure.

Not sure, but Gillispie is on the right track to returning UK to Top 5 status. Can UK get to the Final 4 in one year with Favors? He will need some serious guards to help him out. Let your family get to know these scouts and the Tech community. Might do them some good after you turn pro, your soph. year. If you play at Georgia take a look at the turn out at places like Auburn in the middle of the week,or Athens for that matter, as oppose to UNC in Chapel Hill or Wake in Winston Salem. Major cities major airports major scouts showing up at home and away. Maryland is Washington D.C. Vanderbilt is the only major city in the SEC and they don’t even have a NBA team. You are only going to be around for a year why not make it as easy on your family to see you as much as possible. When you are a pro you may be playing on the west coast with no one to see you.

Both Tech and UGA are good schools. To say that UGA is a program “on the rise” is a bit of a stretch. They won the conference tournament last year, which was remarkable and congratulations is due. However, they are going to be poor this year and nothing suggests they are going to be better in future years. GT has had four first round draft picks in the past five years. They play in the most competitive league in the country and have what looks to be a promising future. That being said, Favors should choose the school that he feels best fits him.
