Michigan making push for UGA LB commit Gilliard

Recruiting mail continues to pour into Valdosta for Georgia-bound linebacker Mike Gilliard.

But Valdosta coach Rick Tomberlin believes that Gilliard, who is rated by Scout.com as the 24th-best weakside linebacker in the nation, will fulfill his commitment to the Dogs.

“The folks at Michigan are calling him,” Tomberlin said. “He’ll come in and say ‘the coaches at Michigan want me to take an official visit.’”

But don’t expect the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Gilliard, an AJC’s The Georgia Top 150 selection, to show up in Ann Arbor, Mich. anytime soon.

“He’s a red and black bulldog all the way,” Tomberlin said.

During stints at Lowndes and Washington County, Tomberlin coached greats such as Takeo Spikes, Demetro Stephens, Randall Godfrey, Robert Edwards, Terrance Edwards and Chris Edwards.

How does Gilliard stack up against this talent?

“I think Mike is in that club, or role, with these guys,” Tomberlin said. “I think we’ll have to wait and look at his whole senior year before we can really evaluate.

“But there’s no doubt that he can be a great player on the collegiate level, and maybe go on to the level beyond that.”

Michigan? Really? Recruits from the South still entertain the thought of going to michigan? I think that would be a risky decision considering the kid is already commited to the best place he can go. But, in the end it’s his decision I guess. Seems like a no-brainer though.

It says a lot about a coach and his program that would continue to recruit a kid after he has already made a decision and a commitment.

A shameful act from a third rate program desperate for players.

Drew- 8 of UM’s 18 commits so far are from TX, FLA or Louisiana, and only 3 of the 18 are from Michigan. Michigan is pulling in a top-10 class with players all over the country.

It’s a compliment for Mike Gillard to continually be courted by other schools. He’s a ‘baller’… You cannot fault any team for continue going after top talent.

He said he’s a Dawg, so let’s leave it at that..

Gillard knows the best competition is in the SEC..

Mr. Gilliard, Note my call tag there my friend. Please visit Michigan. Ann Arbor is a beautiful campus (5 months out of the year). Make sure you visit sometime in February. Dress warm, extremely warm and wear waterproof boots just in case. There are plenty of pretty women in Ann Arbor make no mistake about that. But you only get to see them 5 months out of the year. Make that 3 if you are committed to football. I spent four of the best years of my life in Athens, the scenery is awesome in the spring time, especially around Brumby Hall on the hill out there (at least that’s the way it used to be). The nightlife is non-stop and the Southern hospitality is way under rated. Snow is pretty cool though. At least for the first 5 snowfalls. Then you have to learn to drive on, in it , and over it. Blizzards, not so cool. Trying to start your snowblower in zero degree weather, not so cool. Wind chills 10 below zero? No language to describe that, other than longjohns, L L Bean gear and staying inside. Not to deter you from following your dreams. Not sure when they invited you to visit but you have to visit at least once in the winter to experience it. Did I mention that you can’t order sweet tea or grits up here?

The post by gdawginkalamazoo should be required reading for all junior and senior high school athletes that are being courted by out of state (especially northern) schools.

MiamiDawg….Congratulations to the kid for his offer and commitment to UGA. He is surely a very good player. However, get off your high horse. If you think for one minute Richt and staff dont recruit kids committed to other schools, you are out of your mind! It is pretty common across all of college football. For a few minutes some of you dog fans need to think back to the UF game last year and realize that your coach is not the saint of college football that you think he is. If Richt recruits a kid committed to another school, there is nothing wrong with that!

Valdosta nor Athens are exactly known for their academic genius! If this kid was from most any town in Georgia not named Waycross, Valdosta, Bainbridge or Warner Robbins…I’d say he would look at Michigan because of the tremendous scholars the school has produced. I mean other than Johns Hopkins what other school led us toward progress in medicine? That’s right Michigan U. But hey…He really might want a job as a poultry plant supervisor! UGA certainly produces lots of those!!!

it is easy to have a great won-loss record and accumulate heisman worthy statistics when you only play ONE tough game each year. BadDawg, You know just as well as anyone else that follows football that playing in the big 10 is not easy not to mention playing ND(in the past)…I will say that RIGHT NOW sec conf play is the hardest in the country but please dont act as if it’s always been that way…The big 10 has ALWAYS been a premier conf in college football all things go in cycles like I said you are probably in the toughest conf. to play in right now and because of all the speed in the sec it will take other conf. time to adjust but it wont be long give Rodriguez time if he turned WV into contender’s I have no doubt we will be back on top!!!! unfortunately for your argument, college football didn’t begin in 2003. over the past few years, the SEC has been the deepest & best conference. when Goff/Donnan were coaching UGA, DiNardo was at LSU, Bama had a coaching carousel & went on probation, UF had Zook, etc etc the SEC was nowhere near the best conference.

Plus, this is UGA’s FIRST NON-CONF GAME AWAY FROM THE SOUTH IN 40 YEARS!!!!!!! i wouldn’t classify that as amitious scheduling

To All Big Ten Fans…shame on you! How many times do you have to get beat (bad) by an out-of-conference opponent before you finally admit that the Big Ten is in shambles? I ask you all, When was the last time a SEC power lost to a Div II school?

Face it, Your football glory days are over. The college football world, media, and fans have all taken notice, and even HERBSTREIT has admitted that the Big Ten is down. Not even lowly ND wants to be a party of your shabby conference. So until you all can win something meaningful, just shut your mouth, and tune into CBS at 3:30 on Saturdays to watch real teams play football.

What’s your comeback for that, idiots?

Michigan, remember a team named Ohio State that dominataed you the last several years. What happened when the class of your league ran into the class of the SEC? Enough said. In terms of recruiting, I am going to give the Dawg fans a kid to watch. His name is Leonard Floyd and plays for a weak Dodge County team in middle Georgia. This kid is 6’5 250 and a 9th grader. He will be a top 10 kid in the nation in a few years. His coach coached Charles Johnson and said this kid is ahead of Johnson at the same stage.

Matt your sarcastic comments reveal your frustrations with your sinking program. News flash: Michigan could not get a former player to leave a SEC school for Michigan. Why? In terms of your ignorant education comments, those insecurities reveal a lack of self-respect. How do you know the education levels of bloggers? Don’t hate the world because your team is failing. Shhhhh. App. State may come back to the big house. Everyone knows that Tim Teebow was injuried prior to the bowl game.

UM fans remind me of the crew of a crashing plane. Instead of dealing with the reality at hand, they talk about the glory days. This was one great plane in the good ole days. Hello, it is about to crash. Why are Michigan fans reading UGA recruiting sites? If Michigan is so great, why are they trying to sway UGA commitments? Yes, Ohio State is dominating the Great Lakes area. Comparing trophy awards: I guess Woodson is better than Peyton Manning and Howard was better than Garrison Hearst. Yeah right. Check out the NFL results. We all know the media (ESPN) has a bias against southern schools especially UGA.

The one game UM measures it self against is OSU. Downplay it all you want. Truth hurts. You can give any team 30 days to scheme against the next opponent and they can typically fair well. Definetly when the team is disappointed in playing against a second tier team as UF was last year in Michigan.

Please go to bed in your parents basement with all the you can go all night long. More like 2 minutes with the last dork you had!

Hey, Bulldog morons! (I apologize. That was redundant; maybe whoever is reading this to you can explain what that means). When was the last time you won the National Championship??? Oh that’s right! It was almost 30 years ago. How does it feel to ALWAYS ride the coattails of UF and LSU and Tennessee, etc. etc.?? Since you can’t win anything yourself you have to talk about the “SEC this and the SEC that.” That’s what teams who have nothing to show for themselves do…they talk about their conference. It’s awfully cute how you little boys sit in your rooms and cheer for your arch enemies against teams from other conferences so you can brag about how great you think the SEC is. Why don’t you sissies come and play a game in the cold instead of always having home field advantage (where we [Michigan] still beat you consistently, by the way)? You can’t take a hit in the cold, that’s why. Sissies.

By Matt

September 20, 2008 12:44 AM | Link to this

No kidding, I would love to see an SEC team come up to a Big Ten team’s turf in November but it never happens. Instead, Big 10 teams routinely play SEC and Pac Ten teams on the road in bowl games and in non-conference games. No program who last traveled across the Mississippi in 1960 can talk smack to anyone - especially if you’ve got one title under your belt. Shut up, UGA fans. You’re a second rate program and you always will be - that’s why you have to rely on your conference’s strength instead of your own.

By Matt

When you say I’m reliving the glory days, isn’t that kind of like UGA fans who talk about 1980? That’s pretty much the only time you’ve ever been nationally relevant, and then you went right back to being a regional power. And Dawgtime, you made my point about education when you described Tebow as “injuried”. Is that like Will Ferrell’s “strategery” from SNL? Idiot.

Let’s keep things relevant, Wolverines. We’re not talking ancient history. Let’s talk about the here and the now.

Looking at both the AP Top 25 Poll and the USA Today Poll it looks like Georgia is listed as #3 in both polls. True, it’s not #1, but hey, I can live with that.

Now let’s just take a look and see where we find Michigan listed. That’s strange. I don’t seem to see Michigan listed in any of the 25 rankings in either poll.

Guess what, Wolverines? The odds of your school even breaking into the 25 spot in either poll is just about the same probability that there will be heavy snow in the weather forecast in Tempe AZ tonight when the #3 Georgia Bulldogs play against Arizona State.

Wow, I guess it really is true that - not 100 years ago - but here and now, the Michigan Wolverines really do seem to bite the big one.

I’m so glad you asked. If the point of playing the game is just to beat up on a lame washed-up program, the Bulldogs could accomplish that by playing a Division 1-AA team here in Georgia without having to go way the heck up there to beat the crap out of the Wolverines.

Honestly, it’s kind of sad when the only good thing that you can say about your football team is that they can play when it’s cold. Wow. How impressive. That’s like saying, “my team can play when it’s raining.” Big deal. Who the heck can’t? Whoopie!

Let’s all get calmed down. Michigan was very good for a long time. Ohio St is now the power in the Big 10. Probable will be as long as they can keep their coach. Big 10 is not a premier conf right now and UM is not a top 25 team yet but they will be back. Year after year the SEC will always have more top rated teams than the Big 10.(Alabama, Auburn, UGA,Tenn,Fla,LSU) Sorry Big 10, just better coaches and players down here.

There is no guarantee Gilliard will make it to the NFL, so he should focus on obtaining a Michigan degree. A UGA education is second-tier, and brings very little respect outside Atlanta. A Michigan degree carries weight all over the world.

A UGA grad would be laughed out of any interview room in NYC, San Fran, Boston, Chicago, London, Hong Kong, etc.

I would first like to say that I am a huge Michigan fan (class of ‘88) and have been living in GA for the past 14 yrs. I want to express to all of you in here that the few Michigan guys in here are not at all representattive of who we are. They have been very disrespectful and ignorant…actually come to think of it, like OSU fans. The SEC has been the dominant conference for about 8-10 yrs now, and to you all, I say enjoy it while it lasts, because like most everything in life, these things tend to goe in cycles. my daughter now attends Auburn and so now they are my #2 .
