Warner Robins defensive tackle Jeffrey Whitaker, one of the state’s top prospects for 2010, is listed as “probable” for Friday’s game against Tift County.
The 6-foot-3, 285-pound Whitaker is recovering from a sprained right knee and sat out one game. He has early offers from Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, Clemson, and North Carolina, among others.
“I’m feeling a lot better, and I’ll be out there for practice this week,” Whitaker said. “I’ll be wearing a knee brace for [added support], but I’m good. Thank God it’s just a sprain.”
Whitaker suffered the injury in the first quarter of the loss to Grayson on Sept. 5, yet finished the game. He said he was pushed from behind by an offensive lineman while pressuring the quarterback, and planted his right leg awkwardly.
Whitaker felt a twinge in his knee. After the game ended, he said he really began to feel the pain and feared the worst. But an MRI revealed only a sprain. As a precaution, Whitaker did not dress against Beach last week.
“I feel like I could’ve played against [Beach] if I would’ve had to, but the doctor told me not to try be Superman or anything,” Whitaker said.
