UGA defensive coordinator Willie Martinez takes notice of Warner Robins DB

Georgia has expressed some interest in Warner Robins cornerback Rashad Wynes, who has committed to Alabama-Birmingham.

Georgia defensive coordinator Willie Martinez noticed Wynes when he was watching film of the Warner Robins-Peach County scrimmage. Martinez was studying junior defensive tackle Jeffrey Whitaker, who has already been offered by the Bullodgs.

“I had about 4-5 pass breakups, and [Martinez] told my coaches that he wanted to see me in person,” said Wynes.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Wynes was offered recruiting tickets for Georgia’s game against Alabama on Sept. 27. Wynes said he has not had any direct contact with the Bulldogs, nor does he know how to interpret the situation.

“It’s all good, I haven’t thought about it a lot,” Wynes said. “I’m just going to go to the game and see what happens.”

Wynes has exceptional size and athleticism for the defensive secondary. With Georgia, he is likely a backup target in case the Bulldogs fail to land one or both of the state’s top uncommitted defensive backs, Washington High’s Branden Smith or Carver-Atlanta’s Darren Myles.

Ole Miss has offered a scholarship and is strongly pursuing Wynes, who said he remains loyal to Alabama-Birmingham.

But has Willie noticed that we are currently 11th in the SEC in pass defense? How about noticing we need more QB pressure and a tighter coverage scheme?

Ol’ Willie better start worrying about the defense he has on the field on Saturday at Arizona St., the defense has along way to go, there is no enthusiasm or tenacity, no one on the defensive side is playing with any passion. Come on DAWGS, we know you can do it, despite Ol’ Willie….

What’s with the endless venom for Martinez from the glass is 1/10 empty crowd? Funny I thought we only gave up 7 points on the road in the SEC to a noted offensive (pun intended) coach.

We only gave up 7, but remember how many times we allowed SC into good position LATE with only a 7-point lead. Combination of some good licks (albeit some too early) and SC’s incompetence saved the day. Won’t happen that way later on against better offenses. I’ll take it that we will continue to get better as we did last year, but it needs to happen sooner than it did last year. Way too much at stake this time around. Listening to Richt last night, I think he wants some improvement, too.

Boys, boys, boys…… Relax. We are playing (rotating) a lot of young men out there and they made mistakes (which is typical when you are new). Heck, I want what you want but lets face it…. we have got to develop depth if we are going to be ready to take on the hardest schedule in CFB. Buck up and show some patience. Last year at this juncture we lost to USC. We will go to Tempe and play some inspired SEC style ball and beat those guys because we will correct some, if not most of our mistakes and physically wear them out with our balanced style offense that exposes lesser depth teams in the 4th quarter. Show a little faith and confidence in our coaches and team.

Its gonna be just fine, you’ll see. Tripp needs to catch those third down balls, too.

Good observation on our playing so many guys and building depth…check out your DVRs and count the number of unknowns who are on the field for the Dawgs! It builds a great incentive for practice and keeps the spirit up for the whold team..plus allowing guys to catch their breath..and return to the field earlier to help out. Martinez is still the same coach who coached brilliantly in the Sugar Bowl and developed a lot of great backs..show a little loyalty..the Dawgs will get it done!

If nothing else the Dawgs are always enjoyable to watch,I just would have enjoyed the Dawgs sacking the USC quarterback more and showing more pass defense. But the season is young and I am sure the team will continue to improve. While I’m waiting , I’ll just have a umbrella drink on the beach.
