Junior day: Here are six of Georgia’s best

Most of the state’s elite senior players have made their college commitments, and many of the best juniors are beginning to get offers. Here are six of the top juniors who will be part of the signing class of 2010:

DT Denzel McCoy, Northview: This 6-4, 275-pound lineman is a key target for Georgia Tech and Georgia. He’s got a dozen offers. He’s comparable to former teammate Cordian Hagans, an AJC Super 11 now at LSU, but is more suited to the interior.

WR Markeith Ambles, Henry County: Could Henry County have the best receiver prospect two years in a row? Teammate Ambles is the teammate of AJC Super 11 player Jamal Patterson, who has committed to Stanford. Ambles, a 6-1, 185-pounder, has offers from a dozen schools and has visited Georgia and Georgia Tech for games.

WR Antonio Goodwin, Washington: A lanky receiver (6-2, 170) with exceptional speed, Goodwin is the next in a line of big-time prospects from his school behind current Super 11 cornerback Branden Smith, Georgia safety Reshad Jones and Oklahoma All-America lineman Duke Robinson.

DT Jeffrey Whitaker, Warner Robins: The state’s best defensive tackle this year is Northside’s Abry Jones. Next year, it could be another player in the city of Warner Robins. Clemson, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee are among those who have made offers to Whitaker, a 6-3, 295-pound lineman. Strength is his calling card. He can squat more than 550 pounds.

CB Steven Atwater, GAC: His father, Steve Atwater Sr., was an All-Pro safety for the Denver Broncos. The son is a cornerback with the same hitter mentality but with more speed. He’s 5-10, 175. He has offers from Arkansas, his father’s alma mater, and Clemson.

S Alec Ogletree, Newnan: Ogletree got scholarship offers from LSU and Arkansas last week. He’s got about 15 in all. He’s a 6-foot-3, 215-pounder who could emerge as the top defensive prospect in Georgia next year. Others offers have come from Miami, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Clemson.

Six more to watch: TE Brian Vogler, Brookstone; QB Blake Sims, Gainesville; QB Nash Nance, Darlington; DT Garrison Smith, Douglass; DB Pernell Williams, Coffee; WR Tailer Jones, Gainesville.

On the advice of our recruiting guru Michael Carvell, I’m promoting Newnan safety Alec Ogletree to the list and making it a Super Six. Stay tuned.

Look at Storm Johnson at Buford High School. Maybe the BEST RB in the state as a junior!!

Also, don’t forget Senorice Perry, the state 100 meters champ at Chattooga. He rushed for almost a 1000 yards (990) last year as a sophomore, is 6’0 185 and already has over 250 yards, 2 long td runs, a 90 yard kickoff return td and a 26 yard td rec. This man can FLY!

Plus, at Pepperell there are two juniors to watch: arguably the top qb in state Jonathan Watters (6’4, 190) and athlete Marcus Jackson (5’11, 165, 4.4 40). Both are being heavily looked at by div. 1 schools

Lets not for forget about the junior class fromSandy Creek High School in the absence of highly recruited Braxton Lane * Devon Hughes* has stepped up handedly in their 2-0 start & also looks to have the size and speed of an all american and possibly Big time college recruit at (6’1” 185 lbs. , 4.4) things could get interesting if he continues to demonstrate his stellar talents throughout the rest of the season and into the playoff where the competition will stiffen.

Lest we forget about Kaleb Isreal from Evansdale middle school. Already able to carry two lunch boxes and a back pack BY HIMSELF. Am told the back pack is already up to 6 books. Has an agent (8th grader) who has refused all interviews. But is willing to sell his autograph for $5.00 at card shows if you promise not to talk to him or show any disrespect in any way. Early line has him going to UNLV.

Don’t forget P.J. Orlandis, RB at Shellman High (AKA “Prune Juice”),also a middle schooler who runs a 4.1 40 & is only 19 years old. Can run on his knuckles or feet. Word is he is an early committment at UGA.

I hear that Tech is looking at a junior from Chamblee who is their fourth string OG. He is 5’10” 175 of mostly baby blubber. He quit soccer even though he loved the tickle piles after goals because he was too slow and unathletic. He loves Tech and Star Trek. He sleeps in Star Wars themed PJ’s with the plastic footies and has like the coolest comic book collection ever. Also, he has never, ever kissed a girl.

Seems the perfect loser nerd for the Pee-Stain on North Avenue that is GT.

Dorsey,

You might want to look into a career in stand up. I’m a Tech fan and that was one of the funniest things I’ve ever read. Please post more! But seriously, Burroughs and Woestmann at Walton.

Just heard….Orlandis will graduate early from middle school and enter Shellman HS in the winter quarter. Said he wants to be ready for “fun day” at the schools field week festivities. UGA is out. Wichita St is now the leader. He likes the idea that they dropped football 10 years ago. Word is he will red-shirt his Fr year.

Peachtree Ridge has some pretty good juniors. Remember they had the advantage of learning from some of the seniors from last year and the year before. Add to that the fact that they get more playing time this year PLUS since they’re juniors they still have their senior year to improve even more. Chris Sawdy… Trevor McBurnett (what’s this kid… like 6’5” 295?)… Nick Lombardo… and several others. They all need to be watched!
