How It Went: Avoiding a hurricane to visit Tulane

The threat of Hurricane Ike, which struck the Texas coast early Saturday morning, didn’t prevent Walton defensive lineman David Paulsen from visiting Tulane this weekend.

“We flew in on Saturday morning to Mississippi and drove the rest of the way [to New Orleans],” said Paulsen, who is rated as the 46th-best defensive end in the country by Scout.com.

“It really wasn’t too bad. Most of the weather passed around us. I had been [to Louisiana] one time before after Hurricane Katrina hit. It was eye opening to see the actual damage and the things that were closed down from it.”

Paulsen, an AJC’s The Georgia Top 150 selection, returned home Sunday afternoon. He was impressed with Tulane.

“I finally got out and met with my position coach and the head coach,” Paulsen said. “I got to walk the entire campus. You could walk from one side to the other in about 15 minutes. The whole experience was very good.”

Paulsen is mulling over scholarship offers from Air Force, Army, Miami (Ohio), Navy, Tulane and Western Carolina.

“I’m waiting to see what Duke, Vanderbilt, Georgia and Oklahoma State are going to do,” he said. “I probably won’t make a decision for another month or so.

“But I am seriously considering Tulane.”
