Road Trip: Michael Bowman ‘officially’ commits to Alabama over UGA

Ridgleand’s Michael Bowman, arguably the state’s top prospect at wide receiver, told the AJC he committed to Alabama on late Saturday night.

Bowman said that he met with Alabama’s coaches and told them of his decision after the win over Western Kentucky.

“I did it, it’s over” Bowman confirmed.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Bowman committed to Alabama over LSU and Oregon, among a dozen offers. Bowman was a lifelong Georgia fan and had wanted to commit to the Bulldogs since last June. Bowman said Georgia had offered a scholarship, providing he raised his test scores this fall.

However, Alabama and most of the other colleges recruiting Bowman had gone ahead and offered scholarships, with the assumption that he will eventually qualify. Bowman decided he was no longer going to wait on Georgia after seeing scholarships at his position come close to filling up at most of the schools recruiting him.

Bowman told the AJC earlier in the week that he wanted to wait to commit to Alabama’s coaches in person when he made an unofficial visit for Saturday’s home game.

How it went: Nick Saban yells at Henry County WR Ambles

Henry County’s MarKeith Ambles said he knows all about about the intensity of Alabama coach Nick Saban.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Ambles, who is perhaps the state’s top junior at wide receiver, attended Alabama’s prospect camp this past summer. Ambles admitted he was “loafing around” during warmups when he suddenly heard the distinctive voice of Saban.

“I had no idea he was looking at me, or that he even knew who I was,” recalled Ambles. “[Saban] got on to me and told me to ‘pick it up’ and stuff like that. He was real serious.”

However, Ambles later found out it was only “tough love” by Saban, who invited the youngster to his office after the camp.

“Coach Saban just explained he got on to me because he didn’t want me to play down at the same level at some of the others at camp. He wanted me to play at my best, so he could evaluate me for a scholarship. He said he was really impressed how I performed the rest of the day.”

Ambles was instructed to call Alabama’s football offices after he returned home. When Saban picked up the phone, he told Ambles that Alabama was making an early offer.

It was one of seven offers Ambles picked up over the summer, along with Tennessee, Auburn, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ole Miss, and Kentucky.
