Tucker’s Jonathan Davis nearly commits to Georgia Tech

Tucker linebacker Jonathan Davis, who has been overlooked by many colleges because of his height, said he nearly committed to Georgia Tech this week.

The 5-foot-8, 205-pound Davis said he “was in shock” when Georgia Tech linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary offered a scholarship on Tuesday, and then handed the phone to head coach Paul Johnson.

“We talked for about 30 minutes, and Coach Johnson said he loved my style of play and wanted me at Georgia Tech,” Davis said. “Coach Johnson felt like I could be an ‘impact player’ on offense or defense for them next year.

When the conversation ended, Davis admitted he was so excited about the news that he briefly thought about picking the phone right back up and calling Johnson to commit. Then he decided it would be best to talk with his parents first.

“My family was proud about the offer from Georgia Tech,” Davis said. “They said I should weigh out all my options … but that it was hard to go wrong with playing in your own backyard for a powerhouse like Georgia Tech.”

“In the end, however … my parents said I needed to wait on [a college decision] until we could all visit Tech and spend time with the coaches and team, to make sure it’s the right fit.”

Davis, an AJC Super 11 selection who has been clocked electronically in the 40-yard dash at 4.32 seconds, projects to play linebacker or tailback in college. He also has offers from South Carolina, Oklahoma State, Alabama-Birmingham, Central Florida and Louisville. His uncle is former Georgia All-SEC linebacker Mitch Davis.

This is what I know. This kid has passed all parts of the Georgia High School Graduation Test, has at least a 2.8 GPA and scored at lest 20 on the ACT. I belive this makes him qualified for any NCAA member school. Unless any of you who makes refrences to his grades can PROVE otherwise, then let it go. This just may be a case of UGA not being able to get every kid in the state. We don’t have enough schools for all of the (D-1)talent in Georgia. There are only three states that produce more D-1 talent than the state of Georgia. Yet we only have 2 D-1 programs. Not only with this kid, but that may explain why so many kids, despite their grades and talent are not offered/going to UGA. There is not enough room.
